CM Vortex Plus for $26 or the non-led version of the AMD 'wraith' upgraded FX stock cooler for $20.
Some people would recommend something like the Hyper 212, which is also $20 and performs much better in terms of CPU cooling than either of my suggestions - but the hyper 212 neglects motherboard cooling a bit, and the vortex plus should provide enough CPU cooling if you're not looking for silence. On a modern Intel board with a big fat heatsink and a big fat VRM because marketing want 8 phases that would be fine, but for this platform there's a 4-phase (or 3+1?) VRM and the chipset needs decent cooling. For that reason, if it was my system I'd get the vortex plus.
Low Profile CM Vortex
Is that short enough?
If not... there are even lower profile units. Check Amazon. Newegg's selection for these is much worse.

You absolutely do not want to leave the side panel off. You are inviting dust inside and that will seriously harm your system over time.
