Hahaha, I got you. Perhaps the Corsair Gaming K55 RGB Keyboard? It is a membrane-style keyboard (not mechanical) but it will also be quieter than a mechanical. It is a $50 keyboard with nice-looking RGB (three zone) backlighting. (The three zone means there are three zones where you can pick what color you want it to be, so it can be three different colors, pulse colors, all solid red like you want, etc. And it has six vertical G keys on the left side for macros. It also has the dedicated media buttons you requested. I would like a scrollable volume knob (the K55 has just buttons) but it seems a simple cheap little volume knob is sadly quite rare these days. It also comes with a plastic wrist rest, but I like to use my own longer wrist rest. Oh, it looks like a keyboard engineer designed it, so that's something.

This is a tough recommendation. I remember these keyboards being very popular back in 2006-2007. I had an Aion edition and it was pretty cool. Nowadays, they're scarce as brands are no longer interested in manufacturing them, due to highly popular and potential market of mechanical switch offering.

Might as well just consider switching to these. I have the silent k70. It’s not quite silent as advertised. But it is a lot quieter than it’s counterparts. If I was getting a new key board the k55 gives options for multiple macro keys.

I had this IPS Asus monitor before I upgraded and it was pretty good. I don't have experience with this corsair keyboard, but a friend has it and seems to like it.

Highly recommend this keyboard. It's not mechanical, but it does the job to perfection.

that can record without software, and I also bought a mouse just like my personal one with several programmable keys. Gonna map F8 and a few other functions to it, we'll see how it ups my productivity! (I feel like it is at least 5-10 minutes a day wasted, which over the course of a month... 4 hours of conversations that should go towards my bonus.)

If you're talking about the macro keys on the left side, I know some of the Razer boards do, but they're on the pricey side of "gaming" keyboards. You could also check out some Corsair boards, as I know the K55 has them.

If he'd be willing to consider something that isn't a "mainstream" brand, like this one for example, there are a ton of cheaper options on Amazon. Most keyboards don't have the left side macro keys, but that board I linked is fully programmable. You could make any key do anything you want, pretty much.

My biggest suggestion for your friend is to look around. Put some effort into searching for something that fits his needs, because a keyboard is supposed to last you a long time, and it'd suck to get stuck with one that just does the job.

If you or your friend find something that you're interested in, and you want an outside opinion, I'd be happy to check it out and let you know what I think.

Yeah it's definitely the unpopular opinion on a sub-reddit such as this one, but keep in mind that PC gaming will always be FULL of gimmicks.

I have absolutely no experience with the keyboard, but it claims to be quiet, has good reviews, has back-lighting since you game at night, under $50, and made by a reputable brand. Might be worth looking into.

I currently use a DREVO 84-key Mechanical Keyboard, which I like. It is simple, it works and it wasn't expensive. The biggest issue I have with it is that it doesn't have a numpad or dedicated macro buttons.

I am looking for recommendations for a keyboard that is as close to $50 as possible that has the following:

• Mechanical - Brown, Black or Clear switches (tactile or linear and silent with higher actuation pressure)
  
• Backlighting - RGB or White
  
• Dedicated Macro keys
  
  Something like the Corsair K55 but mechanical would be perfect. I mean I would just buy the Corsair but I have heard bad things about the longevity of membrane boards.

This keyboard lacks green or rgb lighting, but does offer Cherry MX switches in either blue, red, or brown. Cherry MX switches are German made mechanical switches and are generally regarded as the best switches you can get. I personally own a Corsair K65 RGB (the oringal, not the lux) with Cherry MX Reds and its fantastic, but at $170 bucks its out of your price range and the price has become inflated anyway.

If you really value led lighting non mechanical keyboards are the best way to get your RGB fix. While not as fast or in my opinion as nice to type on there are many wonderful options in the way of membrane keyboards.

If you don't want to go mechanical this Corsair 55 is a great alternative. This does not offer per key back-lighting, but has some great lighting effects that beat out most mechanical keyboards in this price range. By the way, this keyboard is only $50.

Definitely push the wireless out, it's not for gaming! He will have a much better experience with a wired keyboard

I whould not recomend any of these two. I have "Razer Blackwidow tournament 2014" w/ green switches... and it's... well... not the best one for sure. Definitely would prefere anything w/ Cherry MX red\brown switches. And half mechanical keyboard should be even worse. About Corsair K55... have zero ideas, why anyone would like to buy a membrane keyboard for 50$, when you can get good mechanical for 60$.

I use all Corsair for my setup, it just feels so much better, plus I used friend with a razor builds computer for a day and I felt awful, it depends on if you prefer smaller or bulkier stuff, I use the Corsair M65 , and the Corsair K55 , it’s the cheapest keyboard but works well, I also use this mousepad

For Mice, I got a nice ergonomic mouse as my wrist was starting to go after 18 years on the job. It's made a world of a difference.

It was a little odd to get used to, but it's been totally worth it.

For a Keyboard, the big sell was a wrist rest, mechanical separated keys, and a handful of programmable macro buttons. I can just too too much good stuff with them, like a 1 button lock screen when I have to walk away from my desk quickly. I know CTRL + ALT +DEL isn't that difficult, but it's a lot easier to just hit Macro button 1. I had a Microsoft Sidewinder for many, many years that I loved, but it finally started doing weird things and eventually went with this nice one from Corsair. It's funny how they are all listed as "gaming" devices, but really I only use them for work. The quality, flexibility, and power is worth the price. Even if it does raise an eyebrow when the invoice passes my boss' desk.

Hello, first time here so I'll give my 1 cent worth.

The real question to ask yourself with a keyboard is if you want it to be lighting up like a Christmas tree or if you're okay with the colors (granted you can 'lock' the back-light to be one color). For instance, I go on Amazon here in the US and see these Corsair keyboards.

Corsair K55 RGB: Remember you can "lock" in a back light color.

Corsair K63: Simple with only one back light.

As for 60 to 144, I personally haven't experience this yet, but from what I've heard, it's a huge difference. Consider the next monitor you buy an investment. You want to be able to handle 144mhz when it becomes a common thing, rather than needing to go buy yet another monitor. Size is up to you

For a while now I've been using a Rosewill cherry mx blue keyboard and to be honest I really don't like it. The thing is so loud my family actually complains about it and I don't particularly enjoy the clicky feeling, not to mention its a Rosewill keyboard and their products are absolute garbage from my experience.

I'm quite happy with my Corsair K55 RGB keyboard (It's not mechanical though)

corsair k55 around $50 has rgb lighting but its not mechanical its a membrane keyboard but its pretty decent and a good budget gaming keyboard in my opinion.
