Depends on what you expect out of time investment.
You could easily get 60 hours of content out of D2 Vanilla and currently it is $22 on Amazon.
I'm sitting at ~300 hours played so far with a couple breaks here and there for a breath and to finish some other games. You do run out of game given goals and sometimes have to make your own, but there is content there.
If you truly are looking for an enjoyable experience I would avoid comparing in to D1, because stand alone it is a good game, but nostalgia and rose colored glasses can tint your viewpoint.
In the end play what is fun to you. What value do you want out of $22?

Important Note if you pre-ordered when Destiny 2 was announced.
Amazon.ca has multiple listings for Destiny 2 Standard Edition, and they are not the same price. If you initially pre-ordered when Destiny 2 was announced, you more than likely ordered the $79.89 version of the game which has not been discounted for E3. If you check your Open Orders on Amazon.ca and do not see the game at $49.86 you should order the Bilingual version which is $30 less. It's the same thing, just cheaper.
