Monoprice has two small 8" subs -

a really cheap $60 USD sub

...and

a better quality "premium" sub for $90 USD

Klipsch has a little 8" sub too - I grabbed one when a local store (Frys) had it on promo code sale for $118 - but that may be hard to find at that price where you are.

You can find others around - Massdrop has the 8" and 10" Pioneer / Andrew Jones subs on sale right now for $90 & $190 respectively

Amazon has the Elac S8 "debut" sub for $150 - don't know if thats the best deal or not.

Amazon also has the JBL Arena S10 (10") sub for $109 - this sells for $199-$299 most places.

Parts-Express has Dayton & BIC

Keep in mind, some of these don't have high level speaker inputs

We can go this route too.....

Front L/R, Center, Sub and a pair of these for the rears. Will sound better than any of these all in ones.

>to the DAC or the pre-amp out of the Vali?

Try both, listen to find out if you hear a difference.

For Klipsch, there are the previous versions on sale, 5.25" RP-150M $289 or 6.5" RP-160M $349.

Subwoofers:

The good ones are Rythmik, SVS, HSU, REL, RSL.

12"

Four won't even work. Music will only come out of the front two anyways. And if they're good enough, it will be immersive anyways.

Okay ouch two speakers and a sub is a tight budget, but I know just the stuff.

Fluance Signature Series. Front ported, so you can put them up against a wall or whatever. Placement doesn't matter as much as something with a rear port.

Elac subwoofer. If you haven't been researching speakers, there's a good chance you've never heard of elac, or Andrew Jones. If you know your stuff about speakers, you'll know Andrew Jones. He's basically the rock star of the speaker designing world.

That will be a very good $300 setup.

Yes, but.

It's hard to tell how straightforward this may be. Due to the input to the sub from the console, it probably switches everything. You would most likely need to get in there, and remove all of the switching circuitry, so one of the inputs goes straight to the amp. Then you could use a splitter to send the signal to both the speakers and the sub (I'm assuming the Edifiers are powered, not passive).

But then, is it really worth it? You can get a much better budget sub, for example the Dayton Audio SUB-1000 for $120, that will be much nicer. Some other (smaller/cheaper) budget subs to consider would be the DA SUB-800, and the ELAC S8 Debut for about $100.

Finally, you might be interesting in building your own sub. Paul Carmody designed an excellent tiny sub that you can build for about $70 IIRC, called the Voxel.

  1. The bar has built in "subs" and they do a good job for most things. The big explosions on your action movies will not have the same effect but for most things the Yamaha does well.
  2. I like that unit because it does have a sub out. You can add in an actual powered sub.
  3. Here are some to look at that are small and budget.

it's not over killing the sound it's getting better sound quality, good doesn't equal loud. Just saying those speakers you're looking at aren't special and your budget could get you far better speakers in terms of quality. For example

You could get 2 pair (4 speakers)

It's just a bit over budget but here's Andrew Jones designed speakers, look them up on youtube for reviews on the ELAC Debut 2.0 B6.2 Bookshelf Speakers.
