I consider padded shorts (we call em crash pads but I guess all pads are crash pads...) a must. After falling on my right hip a few times practicing parallel slides... A nasty bone-bruised hip is gonna cause you pain for a good long while.
I currently use these g-form pads, but I've also used standard football hip pad compression shorts that you can get at any sporting goods store. The football pads come with thigh pads as well, so they're a tad bulkier but if you want you can always cut them off.
Why they made these, of course you'll have to deal with the heat.
