I don't remember specific model numbers off the top of my head but this is the jist of it:

  • Sharp 60" LED TV
  • Definitive Technology Pro Cinema 800 speakers
  • Denon 7.1-channel receiver

  • Monster PowerCenter surge protector (got it from a friend for really cheap)

    edit: Forgot to mention everything is controlled with the Roomie Remote iPhone app which connects to an IP2IR system so I can use everything that's hidden in the closet via WiFi.

That would work but it would require your PC to run 24x7. The Orvibo device does this without a PC. But both PC and orvibo don't speak zwave or zigbee so it's not easy or off the shelf to integrate them with each other.

There are companies that make network IR blasters and I'm sure you could write a custom device plugin for smartthings (samsung has a really good diy community and gives people tools to do stuff like that) and hte device plugin could send the IR commands over tcp to the IR blaster.

This is all assuming their curtains have IR remote like mine do.

The only problem is that for non zwave and zigbee devices, the Echo doesn't seem to pick up on them. For instance I have a Holms WIFI thermostat added to Samsung Smartthings using a community plugin and it works great, but smartthings doesn't share that device with echo because it's not a simple on/off zwave so my Echo is oblivious to it. I can't say "Alexa it's getting hot in herrrr lets take of all our clothes"
To her credit, I CAN say "Alexa who let the dogs out" and she will reply "who? who who who who?"

Correct me if I'm wrong but this would essentially mean you could control the ATV through Alexa, right? It's the same scenario with different input methods?

Wouldn't it be less annoying to just have ALL the audio go through the audio out thru hdmi and plug your devices into the tv instead of the receiver. Or is the latency/equalizers different going receiver to tv.

do you have a link to the ip2ir device? I'm trying to get the echo to control my tv, and i'm trying to figure out the cheapest way that's reliable. I've heard its possible using a rasberry pi and sending the tv commands through hdmi, but haven't found any guides yet.

nvm. googled it, sounds expensive for beta, think i'd be better off with haromony.

  • Yes, it's very poorly supported though and I don't even know if it works on Vera's newest models. You can better accomplish this with 3rd party plugins for the Harmony Hub or the iTach

  • It is offline, mostly. Things like events and energy logging is cloud based, while execution of commands, execution of scenes, and all scheduling/logic is handled locally. They have a free proxy that you can use to access your Vera remotely. It is VERY reliable. I have VERY rarely had any issues preventing me from connecting remotely.

  • Never used it.

  • Yes. Vera has decent abilities built in. If the built in capabilities are not enough, you can get crazy with rules with a plugin called "PLEG".
