You could probably get by with a 16 or 32 gb card. Maybe even 8. Your son probably won't be doing much downloading of digital games. Unless you want to steer him in that direction, so you don't have to worry about him losing the game cards. If that's the case, spring for 64. Trick the bitch out with all the bells and whistles. But by the time he would get to an age where he would be downloading on his own, the 3DS will have long been phased out.
Go for the HORI screen protectors. They don't leave any residue when you take them off if they need to be replaced.

Also may want to spring for some kind of 3DS console protection. I went for the HORI duraflexi, but you may be able to find something out there that offers a bit more protection, since your boy is 7 and 7 year olds tend to be rough.

Your kids gonna shit himself when he sees this gamer package. Way to go dad!
Wash hands before playing, don't eat while you play, keep it in a hard pouch/case, use a screen protector, clean using a microfiber cloth, don't do stupid stuff like jam a coin into the circle pad to hatch eggs in pokemon.
For example, I use these for pouch / cloth / screen protector: https://smile.amazon.com/HORI-Hard-Pouch-Nintendo-NEW-3DS/dp/B00RZ7TC82
cloth: https://smile.amazon.com/Zeiss-Jumbo-Microfiber-Lens-Cloth/dp/B008PNNY02
screen protector: https://smile.amazon.com/HORI-Screen-Protective-Filter-Nintendo-NEW/dp/B00RZ7T8TK
edit - to add to this, I personally wrap my 3ds in the microfiber cloth before putting it in the pouch
For both N3DS and N3DSXL systems
Some of these can also be found from retailers online, like Best Buy and Target. I generally use Best Buy, Amazon, and eBay, but check other retailers just in case.
Case: Looking for a protector that protects your system from scratches? Most people recommend the HORI TPU case. NA currently has one for the XL (LL in Japan), but you'll have to import one for the standard size.
Looking for a pouch to keep your system from dust or to carry on-the-go and protect them from falls? There's sooo many options you can just search up on Amazon and eBay, not to mention other Japanese import sites.
Screen Protectors: Screens will inevitably get scratched, as careful as anyone can be. If you're someone who cannot stand scratches or want to keep your system in perfect condition, you can't go wrong with screen protectors.
Micro SD card: Can't go wrong with Sandisk, and I purchased the 32GB since that's the highest Nintendo says the system will support. Any higher and you have to format it to FAT32 in your PC so the system will recognize it. Any good brand will be fine though, but I just go with Sandisk all the time.
Stylus: This DSi stylus is so damn comfortable. I never thought it mattered because I just put up with the cramping, but I purchased some items on the Nintendo Online store, so I went for it. It's all I use now. The cheapest shipping is $5 on the store though, so go for it when you're ordering other items with it.
Customization?
For N3DS
Coverplates: Amazon.JP if you have a forwarding service like Tenso. I like AmiAmi, but it's hard to catch the plates sometimes. PlayAsia tends to be more pricey, so sometimes you're better off just looking on eBay if your last resort is PlayAsia.
For N3DSXL and N3DS
Charms: Basically the same as the above. Many options around Etsy, just search what you want up. Up to your discretion. :)
Overall
Yeah, I'm a HORI fan. Their products have been solid for me, so I have no qualms with them. I just wish more of their products would appear in NA so shipping times would be shorter, but I think the wait times have been worth it anyway.
The NDS and 3DS use what's called Resistive Touch Screens, and is able to be used with any hard enough surface to press the two active layers together to register the touch. You can use the back of your fingernail tip as a stylus in a pinch on these types of screens.
Modern smartphones and the Switch use Capacitive Touch Screens that require either the flesh of your finger, or a compatible material to be able to activate the touch sensor for those screens.
https://techexplainer.wordpress.com/2012/04/02/resistive-vs-capacitive-touchscreen/
The differences in the technology show why the styluses look so different. This stylus does a great job of showing off both types of stylus nibs. At the bottom of the picture, the black plastic pointed nib on the right is a stylus type for Resistive screens, and the soft rounded nib on the left is for Capacitive screens as it needs to simulate a finger to work.
As long as there's a small enough point for an accurate reading of where you're poking the screen, covering with microfiber is a great idea if you need to protect your screen. I'd still recommend screen protectors in any situation though.
Jayzus that looks tough...
I would recommend that anybody reading gets screen protectors beforehand. I recently got some for my Switch and wished that I had been cautious with my 3DS.

Might as well pre-order the Hori New 3ds XL case and screen protectors from amazon, since there are many fake Hori screen protectors going around.

It was around $40 all said and done, but easily worth it to me.
Do you need one? Probably not. It's more down to how much peace of mind you think it'll give you.
I'm usually pretty careful with my devices, but I got a scratch on the top screen from what must have been a grit of something stuck on the microfiber cloth I normally use. The experience made me conscious of how often I wipe down the bottom screen from using the bottom screen with my fingers, and I definitely didn't want to scratch up the bottom one like I did with top screen.
I got the Hori one for N3DS XL, and I like it. It's not noticeable unless you actively look for it, plus it gives me enough peace of mind. Also while I don't plan on doing so, it is removable though you have to do it carefully.
I would just wait until they become available again because these are the very best screen protectors for N3DSXL:

Hori is a Nintendo-endorced brand

Hori (a really reliable accessory company) makes screen protectors for the New 3DS and New 3DS XL
New 3DS XL
New 3DS
I picked up a HORI screen protector.
Get the HORI screen protectors, they are sold out on amazon but they will be back on stock on March 10, they are worth every penny, easy to apply and if I am not mistaken, they help preserve the anti reflective on the top screen.
I know for sure that the screens are the exact same. If it would make you feel better they have them for the n3DS XL though. I've also seen people using the Persona Q case with the new n3DS LL and that case was made for the regular XL/LL.
ALWAYS go for the Hori ones now for all my potables. I used to buy cheap no-name ones but decided to pay the extra one time and I'll never go back.
Fit perfectly, it's very easy to apply them bubble-free because of a smart design and the overall quality is great. They're worth the premium price.

Removing them is not easy, but that is the case for all screen protectors.
if you have an XL
Honestly thought you were being sarcastic at first lol. But yeah if you use it an excessive amount like Pokémon Ranger where you had to furiously draw circles around the bottom screen you can mess it up. I've had the O3DS since launch as well as the Pokémon edition N3DS, crystal blue 2DS, gold Zelda 3DSXL and the black N3DSXL and those screens are in mint condition since the stylus isn't used as much anymore
I'm planning on ordering it tomorrow when I get paid.
Along with the "New" 3ds xl screen protector preorder here,
The clear case preorder here,
and a 32gb microsd card here :3
Getting all prepped for my MMN3DS too man haha!
Why not something like this which is way cheaper and likely higher quality? It has over 1000 reviews and nearly 5 stars.
HORI Screen Protector for New 3DS XL
This is the only brand worth getting, they are officially Nintendo licensed:
https://www.amazon.com/HORI-Screen-Protective-Filter-Nintendo-NEW/dp/B00RZ7T8TK
Wooo sexy fellow brother! We know have VERY rare peices of 3DS history as they are going to VERY much in demand and sought out with all the new Fire Emblem games coming out, and dual IPS screens on top if it! Be sure to get a protector for that thing ASAP!
This one is popular but I didn't like how easily it slide off 3DS on the corners and it was already yellow out the box
https://www.amazon.com/HORI-Duraflexi-Clear-Protector-Nintendo-NEW/dp/B00RZ7TC6Y/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1486253698&sr=8-2&keywords=3ds+protector

I prefer this case as it stays put on the 3DS and doesnt' yellow and shows the sexy design very well of FIre Emblem

I got mine a few days ago, fits great.
Oops you're right, this is what I meant

HORI is the best in my experience, but Illumishield isn't too far behind. If you're looking for ones for the new 3DS XL, they are on Amazon, ready for pre-order already.
Definitely be patient and get a screen protector on there before you go crazy on the screen. I recommend Hori, which I've used on all my Nintendo stuff since my DS Light (which is still on there and took a lot of abuse due to Elite Beat Agents).

If you have Amazon Prime, Prime Now is selling those same screen protectors here. Other than that, I don't believe these are being sold (for a reasonable price, at least) anywhere else.
Was debating getting a 2XL or a refurbished N3XL for me and my sister but found a new N3XL for $175 on Amazon. $50 more than getting two 2XLs but, brand new, 3d feature is there if needed, better speakers, and longer battery life (several reviews have mentioned 2XL has shorter battery life).
So, I'm on the hunt for some accessories and was wondering if ya'll could help me pick some out.

Because I use and abuse my touchscreen and it's prone to scratches, I will always, always recommend a protector on the bottom screen. This may only apply if you play stylus-heavy games like EBA/Osu!, Picross, etc. I like knowing I can swap a protector in a few years and it'll be good as new.
> I'm terrible at applying anything but tempered glass.
The official Hori protectors have a really nice application method that's almost impossible to mess up. There's a small bit of temporary adhesive on one side to help you line it up, then you apply it for real one half at a time.
The Hori one.
I have the XL one and my daughter has the standard one with blue light filter. I accidentally ordered that one for her instead of the standard one, but it doesn't make the screen significantly yellow, and it will wake up her less if she plays in the evening.
I don't have either of those, I just bought this one: https://www.amazon.com/HORI-Screen-Protective-Filter-Nintendo-NEW/dp/B00RZ7T8TK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1475110763&sr=8-1&keywords=3ds+xl+hori
It is much easier to put on than you would think, but also horrifically complex. But no bubbles and scratches so far.
I got a PS Vita case, a 3DS XL screen protector and a PS3 controller charging cable.
ETA: Decided to get Yokai Watch too and the code arrived quickly after.
