As a fellow owner of the Zelda 3DS XL, I highly recommend that you get the Hori TPU case and some screen protectors to go along with it.

No matter how careful you are, your 3DS is bound to take some degree of damage eventually. This case does an excellent job of protecting it from normal bumps and wear (it won't do much if you drop it, but that hopefully wouldn't happen) while still showing off the design. Screen protectors are just good to have.

An additional note: I also suggest getting some sort of cleaning cloth to put between the two screens when you close the system: the bezel on the touch screen will scratch up the top screen.

u/Gardevoir_LvX · 23 pointsr/pokemon

Yeah. My girlfriend encountered that problem. Yoshida's signature slightly smeared when she put it in her bag.

Nintendo 3DS XL Duraflexi Protector - Clear by HORI I protect my 3Ds XL and signatures with this, and I highly recommend it.

Alternatively, you can go to a hobby shop, and buy a mat clear coat finish for model painting.

u/aerostella · 14 pointsr/zelda

I recommend this case.

You could probably get by with a 16 or 32 gb card. Maybe even 8. Your son probably won't be doing much downloading of digital games. Unless you want to steer him in that direction, so you don't have to worry about him losing the game cards. If that's the case, spring for 64. Trick the bitch out with all the bells and whistles. But by the time he would get to an age where he would be downloading on his own, the 3DS will have long been phased out.

Go for the HORI screen protectors. They don't leave any residue when you take them off if they need to be replaced.

Also may want to spring for some kind of 3DS console protection. I went for the HORI duraflexi, but you may be able to find something out there that offers a bit more protection, since your boy is 7 and 7 year olds tend to be rough.

Your kids gonna shit himself when he sees this gamer package. Way to go dad!

If it doesn't, Hori has a pretty awesome golden Pikachu case coming up that looks amazing on a black 3DS.

u/scottyb83 · 8 pointsr/3DS

This. is the case I am talking about. Very happy with it as I wanted something a bit rubberised and not hard plastic. This is still a little firmer than I wanted but it does the trick. I also wanted something clear as I really liked the 3DS XL I got (Gold Zelda edition) so the fact that it was see through was a big plus. I don't know how well it will protect from a drop as it is very form fitting but it protects the finish and offers a little bit better grip. If you have bigger hands get this case!

I can't link the hard shell zipper case that I got as I got it in store and can't find it online but it is your standard hard shell case with a little padding in case you drop it.

u/gnarlyswells · 8 pointsr/3DS

Wash hands before playing, don't eat while you play, keep it in a hard pouch/case, use a screen protector, clean using a microfiber cloth, don't do stupid stuff like jam a coin into the circle pad to hatch eggs in pokemon.

For example, I use these for pouch / cloth / screen protector: https://smile.amazon.com/HORI-Hard-Pouch-Nintendo-NEW-3DS/dp/B00RZ7TC82

cloth: https://smile.amazon.com/Zeiss-Jumbo-Microfiber-Lens-Cloth/dp/B008PNNY02

screen protector: https://smile.amazon.com/HORI-Screen-Protective-Filter-Nintendo-NEW/dp/B00RZ7T8TK

edit - to add to this, I personally wrap my 3ds in the microfiber cloth before putting it in the pouch

u/Khirsah01 · 7 pointsr/pokemon

The NDS and 3DS use what's called Resistive Touch Screens, and is able to be used with any hard enough surface to press the two active layers together to register the touch. You can use the back of your fingernail tip as a stylus in a pinch on these types of screens.

Modern smartphones and the Switch use Capacitive Touch Screens that require either the flesh of your finger, or a compatible material to be able to activate the touch sensor for those screens.

https://techexplainer.wordpress.com/2012/04/02/resistive-vs-capacitive-touchscreen/

The differences in the technology show why the styluses look so different. This stylus does a great job of showing off both types of stylus nibs. At the bottom of the picture, the black plastic pointed nib on the right is a stylus type for Resistive screens, and the soft rounded nib on the left is for Capacitive screens as it needs to simulate a finger to work.

As long as there's a small enough point for an accurate reading of where you're poking the screen, covering with microfiber is a great idea if you need to protect your screen. I'd still recommend screen protectors in any situation though.

For both N3DS and N3DSXL systems

Some of these can also be found from retailers online, like Best Buy and Target. I generally use Best Buy, Amazon, and eBay, but check other retailers just in case.

Case: Looking for a protector that protects your system from scratches? Most people recommend the HORI TPU case. NA currently has one for the XL (LL in Japan), but you'll have to import one for the standard size.

  • HORI TPU case for N3DSXL or sometimes the one from Japan is cheaper.
  • HORI TPU case for N3DS, or just search "New 3DS HORI TPU" and look for the ones without XL/LL in the title.

Looking for a pouch to keep your system from dust or to carry on-the-go and protect them from falls? There's sooo many options you can just search up on Amazon and eBay, not to mention other Japanese import sites.

  • HORI Hard Pouch for N3DSXL is what I went with for my Fire Emblem N3DSXL. Looks plain and I admit I usually go for something different, but when I received it, it screamed good quality. It's black and looks classy, and there's room for 6 cartridges and a stylus. It also fits a system with the HORI TPU on. Alternatively, you can use this for the standard N3DS because it has a strap that will keep it in place.
  • CyberGadget Mint Semi-Hard case for N3DSXL - I originally went for this one. It's fine if you just want to carry around your system, but that's all the room it has. It also had a weird chemical smoky smell that I'm still trying to air out (it's been over 2 weeks now). If the smell ever gets out, I'll use it. Maybe it's just the one I purchased.
  • Trunk Case for N3DS - I have the blue one, and it's decent quality. These trunk cases seem to be in and out of stock though, and prices are unstable. If you can find one for a good price, I'd recommend it.

Screen Protectors: Screens will inevitably get scratched, as careful as anyone can be. If you're someone who cannot stand scratches or want to keep your system in perfect condition, you can't go wrong with screen protectors.

  • HORI Standard Screen Protectors for N3DSXL is what I had on my old N3DSXL. Here's one for the N3DS. Appliance is easy and they don't interfere with the 3D at all.
  • HORI Blue Light Filtering Screen Protectors for N3DSXL and ones for the N3DS - I just wanted to reduce the blue light because I mainly play before I sleep. Research a bit about blue light if you'd like. I like them, they do the same job as the standard ones with the added blue light filtering.

Micro SD card: Can't go wrong with Sandisk, and I purchased the 32GB since that's the highest Nintendo says the system will support. Any higher and you have to format it to FAT32 in your PC so the system will recognize it. Any good brand will be fine though, but I just go with Sandisk all the time.

Stylus: This DSi stylus is so damn comfortable. I never thought it mattered because I just put up with the cramping, but I purchased some items on the Nintendo Online store, so I went for it. It's all I use now. The cheapest shipping is $5 on the store though, so go for it when you're ordering other items with it.

    Customization?
    For N3DS
Coverplates: Amazon.JP if you have a forwarding service like Tenso. I like AmiAmi, but it's hard to catch the plates sometimes. PlayAsia tends to be more pricey, so sometimes you're better off just looking on eBay if your last resort is PlayAsia.

    For N3DSXL and N3DS

Charms: Basically the same as the above. Many options around Etsy, just search what you want up. Up to your discretion. :)

    Overall
Yeah, I'm a HORI fan. Their products have been solid for me, so I have no qualms with them. I just wish more of their products would appear in NA so shipping times would be shorter, but I think the wait times have been worth it anyway.
u/UberDude010 · 6 pointsr/3DS

The best protection options apply to most other devices out there as well. It is not very complicated, but you can find a variety of protection accessories online.

Screen protectors are a no-brainer. Clear ones do not obstruct viewing and they are vasically invisible. Get Hori brand ones if you like an easier installation method and a brand name, or get some other cheaper ones that function just as well like the illumishield protectors, which I use.

Then for cases, you got body cases and carrying cases. You mostly only need one, but having bothel would be great as well. I prefer just any EVA case I think they are called. It is like soft, touch plastic material and usually they have zippers and a strap to hold the DS inside.

As for cheapness, just go on Amazon and check lol. I think there are a bunch of cheap options there. I will link a few too in a bit.

Some Amazon links:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01LZB4BC5?psc=1

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01IK862XC?psc=1

These screen protectors are good.

The cases I linked are all basically the same except for some with a few key differences. One has a carrying strap, one has more room for games, one is really cheap, but lacks game holding slots, and one is supposedly waterproof. There are other ones, but they are all basically the same. I wouldn't recommend the one without game slots.

Also, there are clear body cases and silocon cases on Amazon, so check those out as well. You seem to have planned far ahead, so no matter you finances, I hope this is affordable to you sometimes between now and then :).

u/jarmuzek · 6 pointsr/3DS

Hori TPU like everyone has said and will say

u/HowardWVampireHunter · 6 pointsr/3DS

Jayzus that looks tough...

I would recommend that anybody reading gets screen protectors beforehand. I recently got some for my Switch and wished that I had been cautious with my 3DS.

This is the best case for usage all the time.

http://www.amazon.com/HORI-Duraflexi-Clear-Protector-Nintendo-NEW/dp/B00RZ7TC6Y

It's not bulky so the system will still fit in most external cases as well. Plus it's clear so you can still see the design of your LE system.

u/bzanis · 5 pointsr/3DS

It's not silicone but Hori makes a really nice tpu case

Clean your device before you put a shell on it.

Edit: Thats the only way I see this scratching anything.

u/tomkatt · 5 pointsr/3DS

> One to avoid? N2DSXL. Mediocre build quality, down firing QUIET speakers, battery is hard to replace, not compatible with docks and overpriced at $150, thin plastics cause speakers to rattle and offer little protection for the top screen it's quite easy to cause ripples, for a mere $50 more you could get the superior N3DSXL or a used N3DSXL for less.

I think this is a bit extreme. The build quality is lighter, but that's part of slimming it down (in terms of weight and cost). You can get a case cover for it for maybe $10, which you should buy for any portable like this anyway, as well as screen protectors. I bought this case, with these screen protectors, and later replaced the bottom half of the case with some hand grips. All good stuff whether you have a 2DS XL or 3DS XL.

As for the down firing speakers... I don't get it. I mean, they sound fine to me. Even when covered by the hand grips, there's no issues with the audio and the thing gets pretty loud with no rattle. In any case, whether it's the 3DS XL or 2DS XL you're not gonna get great audio quality without headphones, so what's the BFD?

Lastly, regarding the price... I think it depends on your wants. The 2DS XL comes with Mario Kart 7, which is a $30 value, and one thing people often leave out regarding the 3DS XL is that it doesn't include a charging cord, which is another $10 or so (the 2DS XL includes this). All told, since I was going to buy Mario Kart 7 anyway and needed a charging cord, I think in total the 3DS would have cost me around $250 (it was $210 online, and there were none available retail at the time) but I got the 2DS XL with everything included for $149.

u/Rampey · 4 pointsr/3DS

I recommend getting a clear dura-flex case for your 3ds, it's not that expensive and allows you to protect your 3ds from scratches and hand sweat without covering up the awesome design. link
You can also find this case just about anywhere in-store too incase you don't wanna wait for shipping.

u/pabloescobyte · 4 pointsr/3DS

I assumed the same unfortunately it's quite glossy. All the n3DS XL consoles are glossy finish.

Everyone says good things about the HORI Duraflexi case which is clear.

A little pricier but better selection, you can go with the TPU covers or PC covers from Play-Asia or similar sites like AmiAmi or even check eBay.

Personally I miss the matte finish of the o3DS XL consoles.

u/mholger · 4 pointsr/3DS

Hori has new TPU cases for the New 3DS -- available on Amazon

I loved the TPU case for my "original" 3DS XL, so this is the direction I'm going.

This is what I use. They are a bit annoying to apply, but they work fine. It comes with a top and bottom screen protector.

Mine is just a black vinyl sticker of my favorite Pokemon since I was little and playing Pokemon Red & Blue. I remember how blown away I was when my Wartortle evolved into Blastoise.

I have a Hori flexible case on it. Very reasonable coverage, no scratching on the actual 3DS. Link here; http://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-3DS-XL-Duraflexi-Protector-Red/dp/B00CM7TCLM/ref=sr_1_9?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1381949683&sr=1-9

With the inevitable influx of new people come October 3rd, and especially with the release of the Smash 3DS XL, it might be time to update the FAQ's Case/Battery Pack/Grip thread (there are only 4 parent comments, and all appear to reference the original 3DS)

What are the best clear cases and grips for the 3DS XL?

Based on the little research I've done, the clear Duraflexi protector seems to be the best clear case for the 3DS XL. It protects from scratches, not impact and is not perfectly clear but is probably as good as it gets. Other cases have been said to scratch the 3DS.

u/Votius · 3 pointsr/3DS

Hori TPU case for sure, they are great and wont scratch up the 3ds like other cases. This is the hori tpu case i have, the previously linked case is a harder tpu plastic.

skins you can get lots of places, depends on what you like. I have the zelda 3ds XL and it looks great through the clear hori tpu case, decals/ skins also come though great.

as for flash carts on the 3ds, read this thread from this subreddit

u/Gr8NonSequitur · 3 pointsr/3DS

will this still work with one of those Hori clear cases on it? I'm interested in something like this, but only if I can keep it in the case.

u/CrimsonKnight98 · 3 pointsr/3DS
u/Leafgreen27 · 3 pointsr/3DS
u/dr_pelipper · 3 pointsr/3DS

Do you need one? Probably not. It's more down to how much peace of mind you think it'll give you.

I'm usually pretty careful with my devices, but I got a scratch on the top screen from what must have been a grit of something stuck on the microfiber cloth I normally use. The experience made me conscious of how often I wipe down the bottom screen from using the bottom screen with my fingers, and I definitely didn't want to scratch up the bottom one like I did with top screen.

I got the Hori one for N3DS XL, and I like it. It's not noticeable unless you actively look for it, plus it gives me enough peace of mind. Also while I don't plan on doing so, it is removable though you have to do it carefully.

Best put a clear cover on top. Hori makes some really nice ones. Adds a little bulk, but there's no way for the decal to rub off.

HORI Duraflexi Clear Protector for Nintendo NEW 3DS XL https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00RZ7TC6Y/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_VzFUBbYPQH9F3

u/Centrioless · 3 pointsr/3DS

This is strictly for new 3ds XL

For body cover, i recommend This gametech soft cover over Hori duraflexi case. the Gametech case has a couple of clips that hook into the lanyard loop holes on the back. If you're annoyed because hori case doesnt really stick to the device, then you're gon love this gametech case. One thing to note is taht the case itself actually has a frost color rather than clear

For the carrying case, I use this Takecase 3ds xl case. It can store up to 8 games in its central compartment. It also has a inner zip storage where you can store a charger and still have room for 5-8 games more. There's a mesh net that holds the 3ds xl on its place. It has everything that I want from a 3ds xl carrying case. There are other alternatives, but they have very snug space, and don't have inner zip storage

u/MzTredecim · 3 pointsr/3DS

For anyone that doesn't want the hassle of installing the Skinomi, the HORI Duraflexi cases are great. Everyone in my house used the previous version for the XL and enjoyed them.
Here is a cheaper alternative on eBay and the same sans extra stylus (styli?).

Also if your don't already have a charger, I suggest USB chargers. I've been using just USB chargers for months now and they are more convenient. Also if you travel alot, there is no issue with power voltages. Official US 3DS chargers will not work overseas.

All current 3DS XL cases should work with the N3DS XL as will screen protectors.

u/CaiserZero · 3 pointsr/MonsterHunter

I'm pretty protective of my 3DS/N3DSes as well. I do use a case along with a Skinomi skin protector, that covers the whole N3DS. And it was inside a padded pouch. But it was clipped on my left side belt. Out of the 5-6 years, since my first 3DS, never has this ever happened to me. Sometimes bad shit just happens.

u/Eugenian64 · 3 pointsr/nintendo

I STRONGLY RECOMMEND THIS ONE.

I just bought the same one (except the original XL one). It has a great feel to it, and you can find ones with great designs on it. It's made of silicone, and is soft and flexible, but it keeps its shape. It doesn't add too much bulk to the device, but it seems protective enough.

10/10 would buy again.

u/RegularWhiteShark · 3 pointsr/3DS

I wouldn't recommend putting stickers on your 3DS. I use this case for mine - it protects the 3DS itself, and you can put stickers on it, no problem. I have a hard travel case for my 3DS, and it still fits in no problem.

Please note that the case i linked is for the New Nintendo 3DS XL. But I highly doubt they don't have similar ones for all the other versions of the 3DS.

I've honestly never liked any of them not made by Hori.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01A6LEXHI/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_t1_Vx7PCbCHJW6VK

Use the same brand/style for my N3DSXL also.

Its softer and easier to put on and remove, doesn't crack like hard plastic ones do and holds up insanely well. Plus it's THE brand for Nintendo accessories of any type.

The duraflex covers have a reputation for being the Cadillac of covers for a reason for any 3ds model.

I bought the Skinomi Full Body Screen Protector for my 3DS. I read a lot of the reviews and heard mostly positive stuff. A very small number of people claimed that it could damage the 3DS, but from my experience, possible damage is not an issue. Although application was tedious because of a lack of a diagram, all of the panels applied evenly and without much issue. Now my entire 3DS is protected and has a nice light sheen to it.

If you just care about the screens, then there's also a Skinomi variant that just has the protectors for the screens. A lot of people like the HORI protectors too, although personally I can't say whether or not they are good. Hope this helps, and I hope you find what you are looking for.

u/branespload · 2 pointsr/3DS

After reading this sub, this seems to be the most recommended. I have a pair and once applied properly they're unnoticeable, but I recommend you look up youtube tutorials/read up before trying to apply them. It's a little trickier than advertised IMO.

http://www.amazon.com/HORI-Nintendo-3DS-Screen-Protective-Filter/dp/B008HPAXZ2/

u/Jespy · 2 pointsr/3DS

Hori Screen Protectors - easy to apply and gives you the assurance of not scratching your screen.

Better Stylus - the one that comes with the 3ds is fine but I find getting a better stylus works wonders when playing a stylus heavy games. Rocketfish sells stylus similar to the ones that came with the dsi xl in packs of 2 and I think can still be found at bestbuy.

Carrying case - if you like bringing your 3ds around for streetpass then putting it in a carrying case and tossing it into a bag will prevent wear and damaged to the system itself. I'm currently using a Hori carrying case and I find it pretty handy and it can hold 3 games.

Bigger SD card - if you plan on downloading from the e-shop then a nice 32gb sd card is great.

Assist grip - coolclown makes a nice assist grip that I find really comfortable if you plan on using your 3ds for long periods of time.

Crystal clear case - some people don't like the extra bulk but I like them for protecting the outside of the 3ds. If you purchased a limited edition 3ds then a hori tpu casing doesn't add too much bulk and protects your handheld.

I was always the same way with handhelds but I decided to take the dive after getting a Zelda XL. Picked one of these up: www.amazon.com/Nintendo-3DS-XL-Duraflexi-Protector-Clear/dp/B00GX330XW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1411183683&sr=8-1&keywords=tpu+3ds. I got used to it very quick and I now prefer it because the amount of bulk it adds actually makes the XL more comfortable in my hands.

u/joosen · 2 pointsr/3DS

Since I have a pretty decal, I use this to protect and show it off. I always have it in my hand, like the girls who hold their clutch purse thingy.

If I'm in a Kingdom Hearts or Monster Hunter mode, I just remove the bottom part of the protector, and snap on my CPP and continue my day

u/Hedzx · 2 pointsr/3DS

I recommend this: http://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-3DS-XL-Duraflexi-Protector-Clear/dp/B00GX330XW/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1414888273&sr=8-2&keywords=hori+3ds

Since you have a special edition you don't want it to get scratched! Also get some screen protectors, I think Hori makes some. 3DS screens tend to scratch themselves (even though supposedly the problem is fixed, don't risk it, trust me.)

As for other accesories, if you find that the XL is too awkward to hold on certain games (though you might grow used to it like I did) try getting one of these http://www.ebay.com/itm/Plastic-Hand-Grip-Holder-Gaming-Case-Handle-Stand-for-3DS-XL-Black-/190970632021?pt=US_Video_Game_Cases_Bags&hash=item2c76bc9755

They're pretty cheap and sometimes can be finicky to take off (use a card to push up the tabs, I learned this the hard way haha), other than that they are amazing for making games comfy. Other things include a club nintendo game case off ebay (or if club nintendo restocks) like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Club-Nintendo-DS-3DS-Card-Cartridge-Case-Holder-18-Limited-game-New-/161467848495?pt=US_Video_Game_Cases_Bags&hash=item25983bd72f

I was referring to getting a clear, protective cover for your 3DS. You can still see the awesome vinyl AND it won't get all scratched up!

u/Stereosexual · 2 pointsr/3DS

I'd get both. My set up is the clear duraflexi and the universal pull and go folio

u/pikachuuuuu · 2 pointsr/3DS

Do you want like a carrying case or one that actually snaps onto the 3DS to protect it?

For the former, I have this and it works really well. For the latter, most people recommend the clear Hori case.

I used this generic hard plastic case for a long time and really liked it. They come in a variety of colours too if you do some searching. It says "rubberized" but it's not rubber at all, just slightly transparent hard plastic. I recently switched to this one (also available in a variety of colours) and it looks really nice, but it makes the WiFi act funny if I'm too far from the router.

u/BlueBlurDown · 2 pointsr/3DS

Interesting, that glossy feature is what made me think it would be far worse than my Pikachu. Since my Pikachu was fine naked, that would mean I should fair well with my MM naked.

I have a Hori case for the N3DSXL, but I'm not a big fan. I can't use the charging dock or a proper sleeve. It's pretty much the case and that's it. I much prefer a proper sleeve like Waterfield.

u/KalN7 · 2 pointsr/3DS

Got the Yoshi cleaning cloth as a reward from club.nintendo.com. I forgot how many coins it costs and it's currently not in stock. You can snag one off of Ebay though or just wait 'til they restock it.

This is the clear duraflexi shell I use on all of my XL's - http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00GX330XW/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1406089974&sr=8-1

skin protector

I used skin protector to keep my 3ds in pristine condition. I bought my 3ds in 2015, and attached the skin protector since day 1 and the paint never flakes.

If transparent skin protector was too plain for you, you can choose many skin designs from decalgirl to keep the paint intact.

Alternatively, buy 3ds grip. Not only does it protect your 3ds like case does, but it also provides grip comfort for playing. I used dreamgear silicone grip for 3ds. It is bulky, but it protects your device well.

u/NeoJ4K3 · 2 pointsr/3DS

I would go for a full.body skin rather than a full.plastic case. Look for a skinomi.

The hard plastic cases can easily get dirt on the inside, even small.stuff and just scratch your system.to hell

if you have an XL

Honestly thought you were being sarcastic at first lol. But yeah if you use it an excessive amount like Pokémon Ranger where you had to furiously draw circles around the bottom screen you can mess it up. I've had the O3DS since launch as well as the Pokémon edition N3DS, crystal blue 2DS, gold Zelda 3DSXL and the black N3DSXL and those screens are in mint condition since the stylus isn't used as much anymore

u/Yiano · 2 pointsr/3DS

ALWAYS go for the Hori ones now for all my potables. I used to buy cheap no-name ones but decided to pay the extra one time and I'll never go back.

Fit perfectly, it's very easy to apply them bubble-free because of a smart design and the overall quality is great. They're worth the premium price.

Removing them is not easy, but that is the case for all screen protectors.

u/pirulin22 · 2 pointsr/3DS

Get the HORI screen protectors, they are sold out on amazon but they will be back on stock on March 10, they are worth every penny, easy to apply and if I am not mistaken, they help preserve the anti reflective on the top screen.

I like Hori products. Get a soft case like this one to help prevent scratches. Please note, it is soft plastic, and if you keep stretching when you put it on/off, the back piece may get loose.

https://www.amazon.com/HORI-Duraflexi-Clear-Protector-Nintendo-NEW/dp/B00RZ7TC6Y

Screen protectors are a must! Do NOT get matte/anti-glare ones, get HD clear. The anti-glare ones (just like anti-glare phone ones), have a lot of little dots to help block light. This can sometimes mess with the 3d, or otherwise make the screen look grainy. I used the ones that came with this butterfox kit, but I'm sure there are better ones out there. Better cases out there, but very good price for what came with it.

I have the Fire Emblem: Fates N3DSXL, and I think it's beautiful. I had the same concerns as you, so I purchased the Hori TPU case for it. I've been using it since launch, and it's still in perfect condition. I carry it with me everywhere in my laptop bag, it's been on countless flights and business trips, and the TPU case keeps it pristine. The only exposed point while in sleep mode is the hinge, but that's remained in near mint condition. My only complaint with it is the TPU isn't colorless, so it changes my console from white to off-white, but that's a minor complaint. I'd recommend going this route before you buy a second 3ds.

u/nermal543 · 2 pointsr/3DS

Or if your problem isn't the device staying in your hands you could try one of these but they don't have an open space to put in cards; not a problem if you slapped a beefy sd card in there and are all digital though.

If you aren't sure about the galaxy, you might want to consider getting a plainer new 3ds XL and decorating it a bit. There are some cool Pokemon-themed decals and cases and things that work well with the plain black or red. Lots of them if you look around on Amazon and Etsy. Just an example: https://www.amazon.com/Pikachu-Premium-Protector-Nintendo-Officially-Licensed/dp/B01GVOFIPK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1473179371&sr=8-1&keywords=pikachu+3ds+case

I don't think he's that scarce. Maybe get him with the game, it's about the same price and has hardly increased from the starting price (3200 Yen) as there are still plenty of offers available: https://www.amazon.co.jp/gp/product/B01N5C7PMP/

u/habit745 · 2 pointsr/amiibo

If you also want the rest of the bundle (3ds game cart and soundtrack CD) there is a "hidden" listing on amazon for the bundle with prices in the $50 range, many of which have prime shipping. Considering MSRP in Japan was roughly $30, $50 including shipping doesn't seem too bad if you're interested in the whole bundle. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N5C7PMP

I call the listing hidden only because I can't get it to show up in search results but it shows in the "Customers who bought this item also bought" section of other pages.

At some point I decided I’ll be getting a fresh Galaxy style New Nintendo 3DS XL... would like to try and take some precautions this next time

But before then, is there a recommended Screen protector and case for it?

I was leaning towards this screen protector: (Got the same brand for my Switch, and it seems to work pretty well)

You can go with any screen protector, I got like the Hori ones

32GB SD card

Full 3DS Case or This Travel Case

A circle pad pro XL if you buy a game that supports it is nice, other things like a 3DS usb charger cable + external battery pack if you need the juice for trips are handy.

But aside from the screen protector which I highly recommend the rest are optional.

u/Dragentei · 1 pointr/3DS

Can anyone put my worries about my 3DSXL to rest by answering four questions?

  1. It is definitely natural for my XL to click in two places when I move the hinges, right? And if possible, why does it do this?

  2. If anyone has a TPU Duraflexi Protector (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Nintendo-Licensed-Duraflexi-TPU-Protector/dp/B00CM7TCLM), is it easy to put on/take off and does it make the handheld tougher/stronger?

  3. Is the 3DSXL sturdy? It feels flimsier than the original 3DS but some people have said it is designed much better to make it stronger.

  4. Many people, including myself, have had problems on all their prior DSes (for me at least, DSLite to 3DS) with the L and R buttons eventually stopping working. Does anyone know if the 3DSXL has been changed to reflect this issue or if it is just a problem only some people have?

    Thanks so much,

I take my 3DS XL everywhere I go, mainly for the StreetPasses (I try to hit up Home Depot parking lots or go in a Barnes & Noble for those) and the Play Coins.

I did have it in my back pocket, but I didn't realize how much more the XL stuck out of my pocket and I scraped it up a good bit just by sitting in chairs. Fortunately I managed to get a good replacement, and not only do I have the Hori Duraflexi clear protective case on it, but I use this thing as a waist pouch to carry all my stuff in. I've never liked carrying purses, but a waist pouch seems like an acceptable compromise as it's basically a big external pocket. And sitting down is suddenly a lot more comfortable without all the stuff in my back pockets -- I never realized how uncomfortable it actually was until I stopped.

You mentioned that the TNP case has a tendency to scratch the systems up, but I was considering picking up a Skinomi set for the Galaxy edition I have coming in next week. Do you think that, coupled with the TNP case would be a good fit? I've got the Hori Duraflex on my Pikachu 3DS XL and while I do love it, it has had a tendency to pick up dye from the carrying case it's in and has started to yellow around the edges, so I've been considering other options. And, as you've noted, the rubber does tend to absorb shock better, as well as resist scratching much better as well, but the fact that it doesn't fit snugly on the N3DSXL worries me. Because I use and abuse my touchscreen and it's prone to scratches, I will always, always recommend a protector on the bottom screen. This may only apply if you play stylus-heavy games like EBA/Osu!, Picross, etc. I like knowing I can swap a protector in a few years and it'll be good as new.

> I'm terrible at applying anything but tempered glass.

The official Hori protectors have a really nice application method that's almost impossible to mess up. There's a small bit of temporary adhesive on one side to help you line it up, then you apply it for real one half at a time.

Was debating getting a 2XL or a refurbished N3XL for me and my sister but found a new N3XL for $175 on Amazon. $50 more than getting two 2XLs but, brand new, 3d feature is there if needed, better speakers, and longer battery life (several reviews have mentioned 2XL has shorter battery life).

So, I'm on the hunt for some accessories and was wondering if ya'll could help me pick some out.

Charger Will need 2 of these.

  • Is there a difference in charging times between the wall charger and usb chargers?
  • Difference between charge times using usb chargers when plugged into usb wall charger and PC? Would one charge faster than the other?
  • In one of the reviews for the Yuyikes USB charger, someone asked about the difference between it and cheaper usb cables. Someone replied that the cheaper ones only charge while the DS is asleep/off while it can charge while playing. Is this true?
  • Using a USB cable, can you transfer things back and forth between a PC and the DS? Be it the system it self or a microSD card?

    Charger | Price
    ---|---
    Wall Charger | $8
    HDE 3 Pack USB | $8
    HDE 2 Pack USB | $5
    Yuyikes USB | $8

Screen Protector Will need 2 of these.

  • Does the system close properly with screen protectors installed on the top and bottom screen?
  • I ask because someone people have mentioned their N2dsXL having a tiny gap with screen protectors.
  • If you use one, which do you use personally?

The one that OP has is cute but it's hard immobile plastic which after having that on my n3DS XL for a year has scratched mine up through moving slightly and getting dirt and crumbs in it. This one ^^^ flexes and I haven't had any new scratches since. I love it.

I guess I'm looking for a hard case (like this) but one that isn't bulky.

u/dom_8 · 1 pointr/3DS

Maybe get a Hori Clear protector case? It just clips on. I am not sure if this version dims the color of your 3DS a bit but it prevents scratches etc. https://www.amazon.com/HORI-Duraflexi-Clear-Protector-Nintendo-NEW/dp/B00RZ7TC6Y

u/mrfaceroll · 1 pointr/3DS

Ah, thanks, for some reason I thought heat/steam might work. Although, I think you might either be mistaking my case for one of the regular stick on protectors or are thinking they might both have the same fixes, which they might, but it's hard to say so far. Just in case, I'm using something like this. Not the exact same one but the exact same type.

u/TheDoktorIsIn · 1 pointr/3DS

[One of these, right?] (https://www.amazon.com/HORI-Duraflexi-Clear-Protector-Nintendo-NEW/dp/B00RZ7TC6Y) I may pass then, I commute a lot with it so I want to protect it. Plus I got the LoZ limited (not Majora's) I know it's not super rare but I love how it looks.

u/snydeguy · 1 pointr/3DS

I bought the galaxy version, and I got the hori protector: https://www.amazon.com/HORI-Duraflexi-Clear-Protector-Nintendo-NEW/dp/B00RZ7TC6Y

but honestly, even before I bought that I wasn't having any problems, but I'm also very anal about wiping down my ds every 5 minutes with a microfiber lens cloth.

same as anything, treat it right and it will treat you right :)

u/Excellus · 1 pointr/3DS

This one?

It's made out of TPU.
TPU is kinda like a hard rubbery material, it feels really nice and won't scratch your 3DS at all.
The case you linked will fit the TPU case and your 3DS, I have a case like that and it fits perfectly.

HORI Duraflexi Clear Protector for Nintendo NEW 3DS XL https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00RZ7TC6Y/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_ytOhyb39BP4CG

Just so you know this one isnt nearly as clear as the hard plastic but it def wont scratch up your system.

u/pancakesandhyrup · 1 pointr/3DS

If it was sold by Amazon, you can contact them and get it replaced with this one.

u/HaydnintheHaus · 1 pointr/3DS

I bought this case for my o3DS XL and generally speaking really like it: https://www.amazon.com/HORI-Duraflexi-Clear-Protector-Nintendo-NEW/dp/B00RZ7TC6Y/ref=dp_ob_title_vg

Does a similar type of case/protective gear exist for non XL New 3Dses? I couldn't find any.

u/suigetsu2951 · 1 pointr/3DS

I have the hori duraflex for the n3ds xl and it comes on and off pretty easily. I ordered the n3ds equivalent for when I pick up the pokemon edition because it does it's job very well.

u/DragonsYeah · 1 pointr/3DS

I got the Hori Duraflexi Protector from Best Buy and I love it. It's on Amazon too.

u/Hackerpcs · 1 pointr/3dshacks

Why though? You can use FTP for your every day needs. Also I think everybody should use this

There is a video review on Amazon for this you can see here: http://www.amazon.com/HORI-Duraflexi-Clear-Protector-Nintendo-NEW/dp/B00RZ7TC6Y the first 1star rated review by Jordan. He talks about how non-fitting it is (after very little to no play I'm assuming) and I decided not to buy after checking his review.

OK genuine question here. Why are there so many glowing reviews for the Japan version(www.amazon.com/Duraflexi-Cover-Nintendo-3DS-Japan-Import/dp/B00NFCCOMW/) when compared to the US version, which pretty much everyone says is awful? (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00RZ7TC6Y/).

You need to buy the new duraflex protector for the new 3ds. Old one won't fit.
Here's a video If you want to see what it looks like and how much bulk it adds.

Amazon is currently out of stock of them ATM, and no word of when it's getting them back in. I've heard as late as May.

u/PM_ME_YOUR_BEST_GIF · 1 pointr/3DS

I have the Hori clear case and if I'm taking the 3DS with me somewhere it goes into a Waterfield pouch.

u/whygohomie · 1 pointr/3DS

Ah, gotcha. That makes sense.

One thing you might want to consider is a clear skin/case like this one

I throw my MM N3dsxl into my work bag all the time with the case, and its no worse for the wear. If you are more paranoid, putting it in any cloth satchel would keep it perfect.

Edit: linked a similar case for the regular sized new 3ds https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B018DM475K/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?qid=1465781615&sr=8-2&pi=SY200_QL40&keywords=New+3ds+case&dpPl=1&dpID=41b0%2Bnf%2BwuL&ref=plSrch

Is getting a screen protector worth it? How many scratches have you guys gotten on your screens? My last nintendo handheld was the DSi, so I'm not really sure if I'll need one.

Also, what about the clear protector? I'm getting the MH4U edition, so obviously I'd like to preserve the nice painting, but I'm just not sure if it's necessary.

u/KiwiAraragi · 1 pointr/3DS

I think my HORI Duraflexi case for NEW N3DS XL is defective?

Here is a picture showing the issue I'm having. It just doesn't fit or lay right around the charging port. I have the Skinomi skin protector on my system, but I didn't think it would give it that much extra bulk!

I plan to send this back to Amazon.com since I prefer the Skinomi skin, but was curious if anyone else had similar problems?

u/ruemeridian · 1 pointr/3DS

HORI also makes a Duraflexi TPU case for the n3DS for what it's worth (which is also clear, but textured on the inside giving it an ever so slightly cloudy appearance), not just screen protectors.

And if you're the kind of person who is into pouches, this Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate pouch is pretty awesome I think.

u/MrBingleton · 1 pointr/3DS

I just bought this case for my 3ds. It's release date is the 3rd, which is tomorrow.

There is also a similar blue one, other choice including import japanese ones on ebay. But that option isnt cheap and it take a while to ship. My cousin got me one for xmas, cost her like 40bucks and it took like a month and a half to get to me.

A 3DS? Yeah it's worth it I got mine for $150 brand new because I got lucky at a local store. It's the standard New 3DS with faceplates. It looks dope, I have the Mario Maker plates that look like this on it: https://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-Cover-Plate-No-067-Super-Mario/dp/B016XIA6F6

What's a good screen protector the New 2DS XL? The Hori one on Amazon looks like it's the licensed version but I wasn't sure if something else is out there that people recommend. The accessories wiki on here doesn't seem to include anything on the 2DS XL unfortunately.

Does anyone have recommendations for good screen protectors for the 3DS XL? Generally I'd get the official ones, but they seem to be discontinued/super expensive.

These two seem to get decent reviews at Amazon. Has anyone used either of these? Is tempered glass a must? Thanks.

I got these and haven't been disappointed. There were a few little bubbles after application but after a few days they were entirely gone.

I also recommend a shell to protect the system. like this TPU one (its slightly flexible and feels good in your hands):

I had ordered a hori LL one off ebay and it took almost 2 months to get here and it was bent when it got here. So it would always have an air bubble in the middle where the bend was. Also keep in mind the hori ones also only come with 1 set in the package so have fun if you mess up putting it on.

Since I didn't want to wait another 2 months again I then just ordered these ones off amazon. Iv been using them for about 3 weeks now.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01K1OO5PU

I'm overall pretty happy with these ones.

The top glass one is fantastic. 3d still works just fine with it. The bottom PET one suffers from what even the hori ones do. they are not edge to edge. you are going to have a small gap around all the edges(if you get in in the center). its really small gap and you wont notice it at all when playing. You will just see that its not edge to edge when the screen is off. From the few games I play that require the touch screen I haven't notice any degradation of sensitivity with it on either. So like I said before I'm overall pretty happy with these.

Just came to say I would recommend a screen protector. If you happen to get a 2DS XL this one is very high quality (I'd recommend the same brand for the Switch as well):

I had good luck with CityGeeks screen protectors via Amazon for my 3DS XL. Install was a breeze.

The matte version cut down glare and only seems to impact 3D so that wouldn’t hurt your experience on the 2DS XL.
