If he doesn't have any other pedals, he just needs another guitar cable. Connect the guitar to the pedal with one guitar cable and the pedal to the amp with another guitar cable and he's set.

Yes, you can plug directly into your sound card. Fuck USB's fuck built in interfaces etc... Get the most simple no frills tube mic-pre you can find. All that extra shit will fuck up the tone. Keep it tube and keep it simple and you'll get the most warm tones possible. The best one I found for starting out is this
