Just started swimming. My pool has kickboards, so that is good. The only 3 gadgets I have found useful are:

Decent swimsuit (not board shorts)
Decent goggles (I was happy with http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DFC9Z7Y but YMMV)
Swimcap. I am a balding dude with not a ton of hair, but a swim cap does help still.
