This crappy looking thing

is one of my favourite accessories. It allows you to switch between headphones and speakers at the touch of a button. It also allows you to turn on and off your mike if you have one and finally it provides independent volume control for the headphones so you don't have to adjust your volume every time you switch between speaker and headphones. I know that you can do all this in software these days but having a button on the desk is just easier and you don't have to tab out of your game to do it. I have used one for over a decade and still love it.

Seconded. I've been using one of those (different brand here in the UK, and much cheaper, but apparently otherwise identical) for a couple of years now, and even though it's not the most robust of devices it's serving so well that I've bought a second in case anything goes wrong with it.

Otherwise that is simply solved by a switch like this:

Switches between headphones & speakers with one button. Has worked perfectly for me without any restarts =)

Nice, thanks. Found this for delivery in the UK. I just wasn't sure what I was looking for so thanks for the response.

I use one - it does the job. Push button on the top flips from one mode to the other.
