Not sure what your financial situation is like, but something like a clip-on wired lapel mic (like this one) would improve your audio quality immensely. You don't really need a super fancy microphone, honestly. In fact, I have several fancy microphones and I tend to find the lapel mic has been the very suitable to capture voice work.

If you are also trying to capture the background noises...just pop in free sound effects or your own separate foley work.

You need to evaluate what you know about your mother. Does she know where you live and/or work? Is she the type of person to show up unannounced at your doorstep?

Even if you only slightly suspect that she might do this, you might want to take precautions to hide your location from her. Don't give her access to your purse and ID. Drive a rental car so she can't see your license.

It's not paranoia if someone is really out to get you!

Other, less dramatic advice:

• Have your own transportation (car or rental car).
  
• Do NOT travel anywhere with her in the same vehicle.
  
• Have an "exit plan" - check the exits of the place where you meet her.
  
• If she demands a phone number, give her a Google Voice number, or the number to a prepaid phone. (You can also create a brand new Gmail address just for her.)
  
• Audio record everything. There are apps for your phone. I recommend using an inexpensive lapel microphone. It is perfectly legal to record anyone, anywhere in the United States as long as you TELL THEM you are recording them. Or, research to see if your state is a "single party recording" state.
  

Yes, I can differentiate left from right origin sounds via stereo using my headphones in a game - I place the left speaker driver up and the right speaker driver down and I can hear the origin of left or right as up or down. If I hear the sound from the up speaker I know the sound in the game came from the left side, etc.

I did my headphone project because I hated how music sounded in mono - it sounded flat to me is the best way I can describe it. Only later did I realize - let me see if I can game with this and I could! But I primarily did it to hear music in stereo again with my one ear. I do sell my headphones on ebay but I am OK with anyone from the single-side deaf community to copy of my design and make it on their own - if you can't because of lack of tools or time, etc I am happy to make it for you.

Yes it's worth buying an audio recorder. The comments before me suggest the Zoom H1 and that's plenty fine but if you can afford it, I would recommend the Tascam DR-40 so you're sort of "future proofed."

You can attach either recorder to a spare tripod (or even better, a monopod) and use it as a shotgun mic on a boom for dialog.

If you can, get a cheap wired lavalier and you will have that option too.

If you're shooting clips for promotion/management/etc just ask a friend with a DSLR to shoot it for you. Or, go on Craigslist and offer $20-$30 to someone to do it - there's plenty of budding videographers who'd be happy to get the experience. Also, bring your own memory card (ask the videographer which memory type they use) so you can get the footage back immediately and pay them at the same time.

Beyond that, I personally recommend filming EVERY set you do. I've been using a little Kodak Zi8 for years and a gorillapod. Both of them fit inside my inner jacket pockets. Another cheap but very useful item would be a lapel mic for your phone. Plug that bitch into your phone, clip the mic onto your shirt (or inside jacket if you wear one), and put the phone in your pocket. This way, you've got crystal clear audio if you ever want to use any of the footage you've shot on YouTube, etc.

I looked up wireless lavaliers and I just discovered that they started making these for the iphone! You can use them while you’re on location. You may need to record separately and sync audio in post, but editing software these days are very good at doing that. If you’re out on location most of the time, I would also invest on a windcutter (we call them dead cats, you’ll see why) to screen most of the wind out of your audio.

For narrating and stuff I would recommend getting a USB microphone similar to this. It’s cheap and it sounds good for most stuff that you’ll use it for and you don’t need a fancy setup to make it work.
