For $150 I would get one of the modular buildings. My favorite currently available one is the Grand Emporium (http://shop.lego.com/en-US/Grand-Emporium-10211) but the Fire Brigade (http://shop.lego.com/en-US/Fire-Brigade-10197) is the oldest one so it might be a good idea to pick one up before it is discontinued.

If you're into Star Wars the Ultimate Collectors Series B-Wing is on sale right now for about $150 on Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/LEGO-Dailego-B-Wing-Fighter-10227/dp/B009OJGLR4/ref=sr_1_10?m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1371520022&sr=1-10&keywords=lego)

Another one of my favorites is the Kingdoms Joust set (http://shop.lego.com/en-US/Kingdoms-Joust-10223). It goes really well with the Medieval Market Village which is unfortunately discontinued but you can still get it for about $150. (http://www.amazon.com/LEGO-Castle-Medieval-Market-Village/dp/B001USHRCK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1371520318&sr=8-1&keywords=medieval+market+village) $150 is almost twice the original MSRP but it is still a good value as you get around 1600 pieces.

If you are into architecture you might want to consider one of the larger Architecture sets such as Imperial Hotel (http://shop.lego.com/en-US/Imperial-Hotel-21017) or Fallingwater (http://shop.lego.com/en-US/Fallingwater-21005). I don't have either one of these but I do have the Robie House (http://shop.lego.com/en-US/Robie-House-21010) which was a thoroughly enjoyable build.

There are also some fun train sets for less than $150 like the Horizon Express (http://shop.lego.com/en-US/Horizon-Express-10233) and the Passenger Train (http://shop.lego.com/en-US/Passenger-Train-7938). The Horizon Express is a very detailed model but it has no track or train motors. The Passenger Train is a much simpler build but it has track and a motor so it is more like a traditional model train set. Of course you can get a motor and track for the horizon express but you will have to buy those separately.

Hope this helps.

I'm in the process of putting together one of these! Really cool.

Yep, my favorite was the robin hood castle I got for christmas, it had the base piece that resulted in some pretty awesome toddler-era architecture.

I looked at the kits nowadays and it looks like the very specific pieces remove a lot of the creativity:
