We just did the exact same as you -- recently (last week) got a Syrian hamster and a Crittertrail Two Level Habitat (from petsmart). It was immediately obvious that it wasn't going to work. The whole thing is just way to small and it's was the largest hamster-bar-width cage they sold.
Luckily I found a large cage on Craigslist and my hamster is now, quite obviously, much happier.
Having been browsing around all these hamster related websites it seems like it's pretty easy to do some kind make-shift hamster cage.
