i travel a lot with two young kids. i always bring books to read with complex pictures. the ones i use are german...so perhaps not best for your purposes. melissa and doug have some really neat "colour with water" books

and then gold fish. friggin' gold fish, my kids never get them unless we're doing a road trip...i think they put cocaine in those things

Sticker books, magentic blocks/puzzles, if he's not in the middle seat, he might like playing with those window clings gel decorations! Good old snack cups with interesting treats that you can eat one by one. Music and my toddler also like the podcast Ear Snacks.
