I've been looking at these mounts but you'd want to measure your speakers for sure.

Could obviously get a bigger desk but if that isn't possible you could try some speaker stands or arms as well!

Why didn't you just leave them like that?! Did the height change in the sound stage not bother you when you put them up on the shelf? Even so, neither position was optimal due to reflections and room gain. Large speakers very close to a wall and in corners = hampering your sound quality, unless they were specifically designed for that use case.
Something like this mounted on either side of your monitor would get them off the desk and reduce reflections. I think you'd find the clarity MUCH improved.
Over the last 15 years I have been in an on again off again state of Frankenspeaker arrangement and I have without a doubt had zero regrets about it. It’s not going to be hard to improve your current setup for far less than your stated budget. I would pick a line of speakers that you know will have some longevity. Get the center and bookshelf speakers and then when you’re in a bigger space either get a set of the floor standers or another set of the bookshelf’s and move the old ones to the surround. Stick with big name brands that you know will have the same or at least very similar models in the next 5 years.
As far as for your space I can recommend some wall mounts. It’s not ideal but better sound is better sound and you will be happy until such time you can get it “right”.

If you want you can still use those Mitsus for your rear and just crank up the dBs to those channels to at least try to normalize for volume. If you continue to wait for the platonic ideal in the future you’ll never get to hear better now.
Finally get the biggest baddest subwoofer your space will allow. I’ve had the same sub for 3/4 of my time switching out and finally getting a matching 5.1 system. The sub is not dependent on your receiver’s power capabilities and it can always be turned down if it’s too much (Ha!)
I would recommend a sealed sub simply because they’re smaller and it looks like you need all the space savings you can get.
If I were using something like these mounts to mount the front speakers (L+R), how detrimental would that be to the sound of rear port speakers? I know optimal distance is different per speaker, but it doesn't seem like I'd be able to get these much further than a few inches from the wall.
