I should set up a file server too for some docs I want to share around the house.

My new mobo will have 4 sata slots, I have a couple of these about to add more drives. Case is a Fractal Design Node 804, so can fit 12 drives in it.

Yea I need the power. Would like to go for 3700X or 3800X, but 8 core is too much.

Here's what I've got to work with:

• 6 8 SATA ports on the MB - 6 are populated
  
• 1 PCIe x16 slot with a GPU in it (won't boot without it)
  
• 1 PCIe x1 slot with something like this in it (all 4 are populated)
  
• 4 PCI slots that that I believe are open at the moment
  
  I had forgotten this, but I had trouble getting two of the SATA ports to recognize disks, so I had it in my mind that there were 6 SATA ports, but you're right, there are 8. Two may or may not be working. Ten disks in total, 6 in the MB and 4 in the PCIe card in the 1x slot

Keep in mind, with some new motherboards, if you use the m.2 port then it will disable some of your SATA ports.


You should definitely get fast RAM, 3200mhz or higher. 3600 if you can afford it but the difference between 3200 and 3600mhz is small.

I'm likely going to be building a home media / plex server soon, and it will most likely be running unRAID, stocked with an abundance of hard drives. So I'll be getting a PCI-to-SATA expansion card (or two). The card that I'm looking at is advertised as non-RAID. I'm 99.999% sure that that just means it's lacking hardware RAID capabilities and will have absolutely no impact on a software array.

But I've seen some weird shit before, so I have to ask. Am I right, or does this fall into the "weird shit" category and does something stupid like only being able to handle a single SATA port at a time or something?
