I'm new to this also, but did you install it on a raspberry pi(I assume so) or some other device? To find your default broadcast range you can download an app on android called Wifi Analyzer or something similar on other devices. Just open that app and see how strong your signal is. Keep getting further and further out until it drops off or is close to and that should determine your range(mine barely makes it outside of my house.), Of course if you are making this portable you will need to consider your surroundings. Open space will broadcast further then the coffee shop made out of brick. If you are using a pi you will pry want something like this to extend your range. you will have to change what wlan port your pi is using. (i pulled this specific antenna from this build guide). I personally have not tested if this will produce more range then what a pi3 is capable of. As far as how to power it so it can be portable I am still trying to figure this out. Maybe this can help you get started.

When you get this completed please send me a message I would like to know what you ending up doing.

I've got one of these Edimax mini USB Wifi's and it works real good. It is showing < $10 and if you look at the "Other Sellers on Amazon" to the right, you will see several listed for < $10 with free shipping. This little guy works great. His antenna is obviously small, so the range isn't ideal for all situations. I personally was quite surprised at the range and never noticed the lack of a full antenna in my use of it. Your perspective may vary.

This other product has an actual antenna and is ~$5 with free shipping all day long. I can't attest to its quality though.

Either one, on one of the many cheap similar "mini USB wifi" adapters, should get you by for awhile, if nothing else.

Don't. It's really easy. I've bought my Pi a few months ago and also bought a case and one of this wifi adapters. It works perfectly for this. All you need to do is install Wireshark on the pi and run it with Monitor Mode. To make it portable, you can also buy one of the cheap batteries used to charge iPads and Phones.

The wifi adapter chipset needs to be compatible with Monitor Mode though.

Edit: A word.
