I'm pretty sure it's both. According to Wikipedia, the Nintendo version even came first. Amazon link

Ni No Kuni was released for the DS in Japan.

I think that you meant for the DS game to come out in North America and Europe.

Yeah, the DS version comes with a 300+pg book called the "Magic Master" that you need to consult to progress through the game.

It's pretty neat... definitely worth owning as a collector's item, when it's still only about $16 for a new copy on Amazon with Prime shipping.
