So what is wrong with this official Nintendo Gamecube controller? Does this not perform as well as the original Gamecube controllers?

u/Toomeh13 · 20 pointsr/smashbros

The official Nintendo Wii U controllers are pretty good and very reliable

Also if you're a new player this video and channel have a lot of good links and info

Nintendo Super Smash Bros. Black Classic Gamecube Controller

Also, you'll want one of these:

Do your research though, some won't work properly.

Games (in no particular order):

Super Smash Bros. Melee

Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes

Metroid Prime, 1 and 2 (recommend playing prime 1 first, prime 2 is Nintendo hard at times. Also IMO Prime 1 is better for popping your cherry between the two. There is a third game for the Wii and the first two games were ported to the Wii with updated graphics and controls, in case you would prefer to play the Wii version. Def play Prime 1 first however)

Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Legend of Zelda: The Twilight Princess (pick one and play the other if you like it. Also TP was ported to Wii with motion controls, and the whole game was mirrored to accommodate for that. IMO the 'cube version is better. That said, Nintendo tried for a more realistic stylization and thus it hasn't aged nearly as well as WW)

Starfox Adventures (if you liked the Zelda games, def check this one out)

Starfox Assault (absolutely nothing like Starfox Adventures. But a good game nonetheless)

F-Zero GX

Super Monkey Ball 2 (don't bother with Monkey Ball 1, Monkey Ball 2 is just straight-up superior in every way)

Super Mario Sunshine (This classic has aged like fine wine. Graphics were good back then and still hold up today, thanks to its stylization)

Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door (if you are only going to play one game make it this one. Absolutely fantastic unique and creative game, everything about it is perfect; years later and nostalgia still hits HARD for this one, so many memorable moments)

SSX Tricky, SSX 3, SSX On-Tour. (Pick one and play the others if you like it, they all have their own charm. Tricky is arcadey but entertaining. 3 has a more serious tone to it)

Timesplitters Future Perfect

Luigi's Mansion (it's the Ghostbusters game we didn't ask for but oh so desperately needed)

Resident Evil 4 (this game got ported to the Wii with extra content and with Wii controls. I can't speak to it's quality but you should consider looking at both versions)

Mario Kart: Double Dash

Viewtiful Joe

Soul Calibur II

Pikmin 1 and 2

Beyond Good and Evil

Kirby Air Ride

Star Wars Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader

Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness/Pokemon Colosseum (Pick one and play the other if you like it. These are sort of a 3D proper Pokemon game. Not quite but close enough)

Chibi Robo (Never actually played it myself but it has a very loyal fanbase)

Sonic Adventure 2 Battle (probably the only superb 3D Sonic game ever imo. Feel free to call me out on it if I'm wrong)

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (back when movie-games were good)

Honorable mentions:

Geist (a unique FPS only held back by it's lackluster writing and production quality)

Mario Party 5 (not a huge fan of the series myself but a lot of people like them. Wii games are prolly better tho tbh)

Animal Crossing (the Wii version is so much better)

SpongeBob: Battle for Bikini Bottom/The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie video game (BBB IMO is much much better but the movie game wasn't terrible and features very similar gameplay)

Legend of Zelda: Four Sword Adventures (fantastic game but you really need to play it with friends... Which necessitates at minimum 2 GBA's/SPs and 2 GBA-NGC adapters and optimally 4 of each)

P.N.03 (good luck finding this one. Best description I have for it is that it is a Bayonetta shooter game on the gamecube)

The Sims

Lego Star Wars games (really should play it with a friend)

Need for Speed Most Wanted

Mario Golf

Super Mario Strikers

Mario Superstar Baseball

Timesplitters 2 (IMO Future Perfect is better but this one is worth checking out)

Tony Hawk's Pro-Skater 3/4 (Never actually played but I'm a huge fan of THPS2 on the N64 so I imagine these newer ones are also good)

Wario World (Sort of a hidden gem. Like a 3d Warioland. IMO the Warioland games are better but this is worth looking at)

Other games as well but this is the cream of the crop IMO and they all exemplify what made the 'cube such a great console. I'm sure there are fantastic games that I missed, of course explore everyone else's comments as well :-)

Congrats on the decision to play some GameCube games. You are in for a treat.

>Also, beware there are many bad knockoffs online, which can be distinguished by the lack of the “Nintendo GameCube” print on the front.

This is untrue, Nintendo released Gamecube controllers for both Smash 4 and Smash Ultimate. If you're specifically looking for an original GameCube controller, as in it was released during the GameCube era, then yes, I guess you'll want to look for the Nintendo GameCube text.

u/moleman_dgaf · 5 pointsr/smashbros

Awesome! Like everyone else said, to play on console, you need:

  • CRT TV (cheap, pretty easy to find; HD tv's have some display lag)
  • Official GameCube controller (the new white or black ones are great; don't buy 3rd party, they feel cheap and won't last long)
  • First-generation Wii w/ sensor bar and wiimote (only early ones have GameCube ports/compatibility)
  • Melee disc, and Brawl disc for PM
  • 2GB SD card for PM. A larger one will work if you're willing to mod your Wii.

You can also emulate both games on Dolphin and play online with other people at Smash Ladder, as long as you have ISOs for the games and a GC controller->USB adapter. Adapters aren't very expensive (~$15) and netplay is a very good way of practicing with people if you don't have anyone around you.

If you're looking for absolutely BRAND new controllers Amazon still sells Smash 4 GC controllers for $26 each. Here is one

u/basketball_curry · 4 pointsr/nintendo

Just get the new line Nintendo makes for wiiu smash brothers:

They are 100% identical to the original gamecube controller except they have the smash decal. I just played mario party 6 using one of these last night. 23 bucks is hard to beat as well.

u/Tenshii_orz · 4 pointsr/smashbros

They remade the Gamecube controllers for the release of Smash 4 on Wii U. So you can just buy the Wii U model. It'll work with a gamecube and netplay.

Black $34.95

White $38

You could probably even find them for cheaper locally if you're willing to buy used, like on Craigslist or a local game store. Or maybe on eBay. Just avoid 3rd party controllers if you care about quality.

u/ExultantSandwich · 3 pointsr/wiiu

I think he's saying he owns legitimate GameCube controllers from Nintendo, this specifically.

u/ChroniclesofGoat · 3 pointsr/pcmasterrace

Poor controller... You can buy a black SSB edition one for $20 on Amazon, the only differences are the triggers (they click when fully pressed) and the Nintendo GameCube thing on the front is replaced by a flaming Smash ball/ logo

Also comes in white

u/inzsome · 2 pointsr/speedrun

>N64 Controller

That's not a N64 controller. However, this should still work when using the right input plugin. I recommend using the NRage Input Plugin:

Good luck.

u/KurriZSS · 2 pointsr/sm4sh

Typically no. Especially for larger tournies, wireless controllers pose as a logistical issue. You may be able to get away with one at a local with below 50 attendees, but once you go larger than that, you'll have a hard time finding TOs that'll allow them.

IMO, you're better off with a GameCube Controller:

White GC Controller

Black GC Controller

GC Adapter

(Note: There's no difference between the colors, just take your pick)

Course, if for some reason you still want wireless:

Classic Pro Controller

Classic Controller

Wii U Pro Controller

u/TheSleepyHead · 2 pointsr/smashbros

Any official ones that are made from Nintendo. Some recommendations are: Black, Platinum (Silver), Indigo, White (Japan Only), Black with Sm4sh logo, White with Sm4sh logo (Also Japan Only)

Edit: Here's a link to one of them if you need it. If you end up purchasing it, make sure it says Nintendo on the back with the GameCube logo on the front.

Edit 2: Here's a newer and cheaper one.

Edit 3: Japan exclusive will make you feel cool among all your smash friends.

u/daguil68367 · 2 pointsr/wii
u/Xikar_Wyhart · 2 pointsr/nintendo

I mean I'm talking about this. Not the WiiU Fightpad

For the release of Super Smash 4 WiiU they released the adapter, and started reproducing the original GCN controllers, only with a different face plate with the Smash logo inside of saying "Nintendo". The wire is also like 8 feet instead of the 4ft the original had.

u/HortonHearsAGenocide · 2 pointsr/SSBM

On 20xx vs normal Melee: it doesn't matter. 20xx has L-cancel lights and random music if you're interested.

On stage zoom: there might be something out there but you'll get used to the camera pretty quickly, it's fairly good and intuitive

On Xbox controller: other people have you advice on how to set it up but if you're ever planning on going to an actual tournament you'll want a real GameCube controller. To pick one up for Dolphin you can get an adapter here:

and a controller here:

If you have any interest in playing Smash Wii U these will work for that too. A guide on how to set it up for Dolphin is here:

u/TimpZ91 · 2 pointsr/SSBM

Actually it's 90€... I've never in my life bought a second hand controller that I liked for any console (and I've bought maybe 15 overall), and with the recent spike in prices I can't see good second hand controllers being super cheap either.

But if you're fine with that then good for you I guess.

u/Zalozis · 2 pointsr/smashbros

Unbelieve. I've been watching the prices since July. Literally in the last 10 minutes the price went down.(Prices around $22-$26: one price at $18 w/ shipping, but ships from Japan) How uncanny.

Black Smash GC

White Smash GC

[EDIT] Annnnnnnnd, they're gone in about a hour and a half.

u/Muxedo20XX · 1 pointr/smashbros

Just look at this chart man, this is Canadian Amazon price tracker for the Black Gamecube controller. The prices from January to now the prices will change by a lot and slowly decrease by 5 or 10 bucks.

u/MoonMax · 1 pointr/teenagers

I'd buy:

u/WarriorsBlew3to1Lead · 1 pointr/GamePhysics

With the new smash on Wii u Nintendo released a bunch of brand new GameCube controllers, so you can get new first party controllers for under $30 easily

u/cooldanman22 · 1 pointr/smashbros

Playing melee on Wii has no differences from on a real GameCube, so that should be fine. As for controllers, the best option is to get the new smash 4 branded controllers, authentic and from Nintendo.

u/Aegisth · 1 pointr/smashbros

I know you said that you don't want to buy a console but think of this:

  • Nintendo Wii - $60
  • Melee - $50
  • GC Controller - $30
  • GC Memory Card - $10

You'll get started with Melle for $150. Less if you can buy locally and find things on CL.

Otherwise, if you want to do Melee. Dolphin and Melee with a GC controller and Adapter will be the best for you.
u/ripread · 1 pointr/leagueoflegends

SmashBros is not only great, it's also still super grassroots, not run by a company, and completely free besides the initial cost. This documentary is a great intro to the scene.

How to get started

Melee - big combo style, very advanced metagame, total start cost $40
Install Dolphin
Install the 20XX Melee ISO
Buy a Gamecube Controller and a Gamecube/USB Adapter
Start practicing

Smash 4 - small combo style, infant metagame, total start cost $450
Buy Wii U, Smash 4, and a Controller + Adapter
Start Practicing (wii u has online play built in)

And don't forget to hit up /r/smashbros

u/vemfanvet · 1 pointr/Gamecube

I purchased three of these. Since I live in Sweden and the shipping costs are lower from Germany, I bought them here. The quality is great, better than my old original controllers.

u/IamCreditCard · 1 pointr/smashbros

Does anyone know if the smash black gamecube controllers are any different from the smash white ones? (except for color lol)

u/Eduguy1 · 1 pointr/SSBM

Bit expensive for a used controller, but it's fine if it's real.

Here are some new smash 4 controllers from Amazon which should be around the same price with shipping.

Also, check your local craigslist or what you have in the UK (Gumtree?)

u/Alphafraud · 1 pointr/smashbros

The adapter exists.

The Switch dock exists and has 3 USB ports. All the game needs to do is respond to input from the adapter. It works on Android, Windows, Linux, Mac and Wii U (OS?). I'm pretty sure they can add it into a new Smash or a port without any issue.

And why? Because the fans use GC controllers and they've kept supporting it for 3 generations now. They're still making and selling SSB-branded GC Controllers.

Also, how have you been waiting since Brawl came out? There is a better Smash after Brawl, with a different engine/physics. Even for an entirely new one, people would want GC support. I don't/won't feel like buying 3 more Pro Controllers, when me and my friends all have SSB brand GC controllers.

u/Baz135 · 1 pointr/smashbros

You can play online on a Wii using Wiimmfi, thought not many people do that.

Sorta, yeah, but if you're just starting out it's not terribly important. Wavedashing is a fairly simple concept, so even if you can't do it right now you'll eventually get it down.

You should check out the list of regional Facebook groups.

As long as it's a Nintendo controller, and not third-party, it'll be fine. You can also get them online.

Hope that helps!

u/CharlestonChewbacca · 1 pointr/nintendo

Fortunately Nintendo released these along with Smash Bros for Wii U.

u/rustinhieber42 · 1 pointr/SSBM

I'm probably just echoing what everyone else said, but here we go.

Fox is technically the best character in the game, but I wouldn't recommend him for a beginner personally. The tier list assumes that all players play as perfectly as possible, and the things that make Fox good require you to press a lot of buttons very quickly at very specific timings, which is more difficult for newer players. To find out which character (I'd recommend just one to start) you want to main, I'd recommend watching some professionals play matches and see if any of them catch your eye. The easiest characters for beginners to pick up are probably Marth or Sheik, but the most important thing by FAR is to main the character YOU want to main. If you want to main Fox, do it! If you find that you really have your heart set on Kirby, don't let anyone stop you! Hell, I'm from Minnesota, and our 3rd ranked player is a Kirby main. You have to play with whoever YOU find the most fun to play with, otherwise practicing won't be fun, and you'll never get anywhere.

Oh, and get a gamecube controller. Get a gamecube controller. Get a gamecube controller. They're practically designed for Smash Bros, and they're the only controllers you'll be able to use in tournaments if you decide to go to any in the future. Don't get a cheap knock-off either, they're not nearly as good and they break easily. Get this one, or a different color of this one. It's by far the best for a beginner. If you happen to get really into Melee, you might want to get one of the older editions of the GC controllers, as they're considered to be slightly better, but they're way more expensive. If you're using Dolphin, you'll also need an adapter. It might be a little annoying to get set up, but Dolphin Emulator's site has troubleshooting for every possible issue.

Welcome to the community!

TL;DR Play whoever you want but I'd personally recommend not Fox for a beginner, Marth or Sheik would be "easiest". Get a real GC controller and an adapter to use on Dolphin.

u/ItsMeRyman · 1 pointr/SSBM

You're convincing, haha. But when I went on Amazon for a controller, I found this and I don't exactly understand how it works. There are so many offers to sell the controller, but the one it automatically put me with is $50. Am I missing something?

u/YoungJesusOnTheBeat · 1 pointr/smashbros

I bought one of the new smash 4 ones:

I also bought a lightly used original gamecube controller, which I like more. Either will be a great improvement.

u/BadPenguin810 · 1 pointr/AskGames

I've used 360 controllers without issue. I set up a PS4 controller for my friend yesterday and that also worked without issue. You'll be fine with either one, though the PS4 controller needed DS4Windows running to make it work properly. The 360 will just work with windows.

The best solution, however, is to buy a Super Smash Bros. Gamecube Adapter and a Gamecube controller.
