Big oof on using that original c-stick and d-pad. I like the direction 3rd party manufacturers took the controller with the usb/switch compatible ones like this.

If you want to stick to wired you may like this Gamecube style option (it's USB, too. So you could get a hub to plug them into).

I'm in the same situation as you. This is my first Smash game and when Smash released I bought a Pro Controller. I figured it was better to buy a Pro Controller so I could also use it for other games, as the GC controller doesn't have motion controls or rumble.

Three months ago, I got a PDP gamepad controller Zelda themed and I really enjoy the notches and, once used to the buttons, is amazing. The build of this controller is really good (it took a heavy hit recently and it is in top form), and it doesn't have the bumpers of a GC controller (I have tried them a bit from friends and it is plain weird for me) but regular bumpers, with the ZL that the GC lacks.

Lately I've been going back and forth between the two. I got to say, I enjoy them both for different reasons. The PDP controller has the notches, that special button layout, and doesn't sacrifice the bumpers. The Pro Controller has rumble (yeah, I like it), build quality, and it's wireless, which I prefer over wired. I'm also experimenting with a "Zachray" configuration (specials to X to do the A + Special input easier) and B to grab. I feel the GC layout has less flexibility in customization.

Right now I prefer to play with the PDP gamepad controller, but it could change in the future.

Pros:

GameCube inspired Pro Controller designed for the Nintendo Switch

Compatible with any game but mostly efficient for fighting games

Change out the C Stick for a full size stick with the detachable stick design (included)

10 foot USB cable provides plenty of room to play with ease

•Not very expensive

•Has the buttons from the original joycons, e.g screenshot, home etc

•Not too overwhelming design

Officially licensed by Nintendo

Cons:

•Not wireless but can be used in handheld using a usb c to usb 3.1 adaptor

•Doesn't wake the console up

Don't know if it's what you wanted but includes most of your requirements!!

I never use the joycons unless I have to use them for Mario Party or if I'm playing Pokemon LGE in docked mode. I would recommend getting a couple of pro controllers, but if that's too much money you can get a couple of wired controllers for about half the price. I would recommend either one of these:

I’m pretty sure you can get those sent to the US. PDP also released a couple last Friday so I ordered one here. I got the pikachu one and it should be here today, most reviews I’ve seen on YouTube don’t have any faults with them.

Edit: the price on amazon seems to have ratcheted up to around $37. I preordered when they were $25 so you might find them cheaper elsewhere.

The are two types.

The Nintendo produced Smash Bros Ultimate branded Gamecube controllers, which are normal gamecube controllers and will totally work on a Wii, Wii U, or Gamecube.

And the third party Gamecube Pro controllers. Which are wireless or USB and will not work on a Wii, Wii U, or Gamecube.

PowerA, HORI, and PDP and make these. These are Switch Pro controller replacements simply designed to look and feel like a gamecube controller.
