5$ would get you a 50 card bulk lot on ebay but nothing coherent enough to be considered a playable deck. You can get the Sun and Moon theme decks for about $10 a piece but they have limited long term playability. The best value is the Keldeo v Rayquaza Battle Arena Deck but you'll have to expand your budget if you want 6 decks.

How has the trainer kit been for you? There are instruction booklets for both 30-card decks that tell you how to play it. Literally, it tells you: "Raichu deck, draw a card. You see it is a Fletchling, so put it on your bench, etc."

If everything gets disorganized, the cards are also numbered from 1-30, so you can reorganize them and play again, to get the feel for it. Remember you always draw a card to start your turn, only attach one energy per turn, one supporter per turn, and so on. The playmat included in the trainer kit also lists the sequence of events you are able to do.

Once you understand the trainer kit, the next step is the theme decks. These are 60-card decks that are more consistent and have better plays than "attack and pass." Any of the Sun/Moon Theme decks would be good, as they have been getting more and more consistent. The most recent ones are Garchomp & Empoleon, but if your son has a favorite Pokemon, there are also the starters (Decidueye, Primarina, Incineroar). I work at a league with kids, and they also like Solgaleo/Lunala.

Here's a link to the starter decks for Sun and Moon which is the best place to start. You could also get an "Elite Trainer Box" if you want some extra goodies but they're not that necessary. Getting some boosters in general could also help.

All versions will work together, they're just cards. It only really matters if you're going to go to tournaments.

EX and GX are just a type of card, it's not a separate mode or game or anything.

If I go to Amazon, it looks like I can get a deck for ~$10-11 each.

Is that the going rate? Or might there be other places where the same thing is less? Other decks? They are mostly six year olds just learning how to read.
