$30

  • the same storage I would have put into the Saygus + 64gb Nexus 6P for cheaper than a vaporware phone by a no-name company.

There is this option if you want a portable battery pack as well.

The app i use to manage my storage is ES File Explorer File Manager https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.estrongs.android.pop

i have 2 things that i use for storage.

Kingston Digital DT MicroDuo USB 2.0 micro USB OTG
by Kingston
Link: http://amzn.com/B00JE72K94

This is a usb key with a micro usb on one side so you can plug it into your phone directly.

The other is a wireless drive that allows me to connect to my android phone or iPad or even my laptop. it's called the RAVPower FileHub Wireless SD Card Reader with Built-in 3000mAh External Battery Pack black and white

Link: http://amzn.com/B00INMB23Q

The device creates a wifi network and allows the device to connect. Now there are other wireless drives out there but the nice thing about this drive is that it uses USB or SD cards for storage so moving the data onto the drive is very easy. I was able to get a nice cheap SD card for storage. Also as a nice bonus it has a little battery backup.

I've been thinking of a summer trip like this. I have both a Hero 3+ Black and a Hero 4 Black. Alas, I will only use one of them for my trip (probably the H3+).

My recommendation would be to buy 2x/3x GoPro Hero ($130). Have them strapped to you, your handlebar and maybe one close to the road just behind your front tire. If everyone in your riding crew has a GoPro Hero, you can combine the different perspectives of all your GoPro's for a sweet post production video.

A 3-axis gimbal would be nice to stabilize one of your GoPro's. Is it worth it though? Maybe. Even if one was willing to put in the funds for all this, where would one mount the gimbal stabilized GoPro?

I'll be watching your thread for ideas from others as it would be nice to get ideas from others on this. Good luck and happy riding.

Oh, one more thing. You might want a back up solution for all those SD cards for a 10 day trip (http://www.amazon.com/RAVPower-Multifunctional-wireless-Accessing-compatible/dp/B00INMB23Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1425946115&sr=8-1&keywords=portable+backup+disk+with+micro+sd+slot).

Found this one on Amazon. Appears to work as a wireless NAS. There's also this Kingston model.

Thanks for the link!

Have you had any issues with something like that? 1TB is huge for what I was expecting.

I was looking at something like this or this.

The added charge and USB or SD card ability I found appealing, although the Seagate is tempting.

I'd go for the $599 one based purely on RAM, but $40 bucks and some spare flash drives, sd cards and/or an external HD and you won't need to worry about storage on an ultrabook or tablet again. Got one of these instead of a wireless external hard drive recently:

As others have pointed out, making the connection is the easy part, it's the software that's the issue. The best way to deal with that would be a USB->WiFi device. There are plenty of those on Amazon, like this one:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00INMB23Q

It features a battery backup, SD card reader as well as USB ports all for $40.

But... You're a bit trapped by any device like this in terms of the software it's running and the app you have on your device. Also at issue would be how well the app or even if the app ran on an iPhone 4.

You could also get something like http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00INMB23Q/ref=oh_details_o06_s01_i01?ie=UTF8&psc=1 which you can plug a hard drive into and it shares the files over wifi.

I have tried a few ways traveling to places where I can't bring a laptop. This would work well, I think. I've been meaning to try it. People have made custom firmware for it which can make it autonomous.

I always try to have 2 copies of all the photos backed up. I separate the 2 copies. For example, one drive stays in my suitcase and the other goes in my wallet or backpack. Keep them in zip lock bags.

I use large USB flash drives, OTG adapter, and my phone to copy the files around.

Here are the ingredients:

Phone or tablet that supports OTG.
OTG USB adapter.
USB hub.
USB SD card reader.
2+ USB flash drives (128GB)
ES File Explorer or a file explorer app

I plug the sd card reader and 1 drive into the hub, which connects to my phone through the OTG adapter. I use the file explorer app to copy the files from my camera sd card into the flashdrive. Then I copy them again into the 2nd flash drive. I do this every night.

Keep the 2 identical flash drives physically separate all the time.

You could get a USB FileHub for moving the data so you don't even have to worry about daisy chaining. I got this: RAVPower Filehub, 5 in 1 SD Card USB Reader Wireless Hard Drive Companion WiFi Bridge Sharing Media Streamer 3000mAh External Battery Pack, Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00INMB23Q/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_XwCrybW0ED6TS

And can't speak highly enough of it.

Like these?

http://www.amazon.com/RAVPower-Wireless-Companion-Streamer-External/dp/B00L9TEIMW/

$30 & $36 respectively, shares files over WiFi, MicroSD & USB slots, built-in battery. I've only casually looked into building my own piratebox, but to my untrained eye, these look like pretty nice no-effort alternatives.

I've never hooked up more than one usb drive at a time. So I can't say for sure if it would work. The one downside is, unlike the WD, it doesn't have a "dump" button. That will just offload everything. You need to use a phone or tablet to control it and tell it to copy data over. After that I just reformat in the GoPro. If the internal battery isn't a big factor for you and you don't care about the wired lan port, you can always pick up the other model. It has a smaller battery, but it also supports fullsized SD cards.

http://www.amazon.com/RAVPower-FileHub-Wireless-External-sharing/dp/B00INMB23Q/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1415248461&sr=8-2&keywords=ravpower+filehub

I prefer it over the WD since I already have lots of storage in thumb drives and portable drives. And I always get weary when hard drives are built in. Since it becomes a brick if the drive fails.

RAVPower Filehub, 5 in 1 SD Card USB Reader Wireless Hard Drive Companion WiFi Bridge Sharing Media Streamer 3000mAh External Battery Pack, Black This will allow you to transfer from an SD card to a USB drive, under the control of an app on your phone. I took one with me when I felt uncomfortable taking a computer. However, it did seem a little slow and choked up on some transfers of huge quantities of files. It is cheap to buy and try, but I would experiment before you have to rely on it. Frankly, next time I am going to just bring the computer.

u/TheBatmanToMyBruce · 1 pointr/gadgets

You could get something like this and just use a flash drive as the medium.
