Yup, keep the boat afloat.

3 options are:

  1. what you said, battery wall charger

  2. replace charge port

  3. install wireless QI charge chip

I'm using this receiver, and this charger. I keep my phone in an Otterbox Commuter case and this combo works great. You need to use the wall wart charger that comes with the phone, and you have to set it on the charger a little bit offset, but once you get that figured out, it works the charm.

i bought this Qi Receiver:

It works, but I can't comment on the waterproof ability after adding it. It doesn't look like it creates too much of a bulge.

Have you tried cleaning out the charging port with tweezers? If you have a way of getting a magnified view on it (microscope, borescope) and some sharp tweezers you'd be surprised by how much lint and gunk you can clean out of a charging port. If lint isn't the issue and you still want an S5 you can get yours repaired at a phone repair shop or find new ones for fairly cheap (under $175 new on eBay, and there are some near-mint ones on Swappa for as low as $100). Sounds like you just need a new battery and charging port.

It's really easy to remove the charging flap. Gimme a sec and I'll write up how to remove it.

Unscrew that screw and pull up the little bit of plastic under it, then remove the flap and put the plastic and screw back in.

Alternatively you could get a new battery, a couple Qi wireless chargers, and a wireless charging cover or sticker (such as this one). The sticker just sticks inside of the back cover and lets you use wireless chargers. It won't charge as fast but it's the cheapest option.

EDIT: Samsung is currently selling the S8 for $150 off plus $150 if you trade in your S5, which would make the S8 $425 and S8+ $525 (buy page is here) If you can handle potentially not getting $150 off (only $25 if your S5 doesn't pass testing) then I'd consider upgrading to it. I switched to one from my OnePlus 3T and it's a solid phone. Also I'd go for the unlocked variant, it will get updates the fastest and it won't have any of Verizon's bloatware on there. Plus you can switch to another carrier with no issue if you want to down the line, and you don't need to pay the extra $25 a month or whatever to pay off the phone. If you buy unlocked it's 100% yours and there shouldn't be any fees down the line.

You're saying that something this small couldn't be integrated into the phone in a smaller package? It should add maybe a little more than a millimeter, which isn't bad on an already slim phone. The weight is almost negligible.

Also, it looks like the V3Z has a slightly bigger battery, which combined with the qi charging, could lead the overall thicker phone.

Edit: I found an even smaller qi patch This one is advertised as 0.5mm

Get a wireless charging base.

If you get the new iPhone and it doesn't support QI charging, a case will be made soon enough that does.

If you end up getting Android because something about the new iPhone sets you off, it will likely support QI or have an accessory to allow it to do so.

I have something like this for my S5 that allows it to qi charge. officially your supposed to use this, but it won't fit in any protective case with that. The newer Galaxy phones have it built-in.

It's likely that if Apple would add QI support this release, regardless of if they remove the lightning port (which they won't, otherwise a restore would require a JTAG cable and disassembly.) although replacing lightning with USB-C is something I could see.
