There are a few options:

  • OnePlus 3T. For price, right now it costs $599CAD from OnePlus's website. As for the design it has a sleek all metal body without many distracting features. It has a 16MP camera and you can see some pictures from it here. And while it is definitely common among this subreddit, I haven't ever actually seen one in real life. And don't feel ashamed, I also like when someone notices the walnut wood back or my laser engraved name on my Moto X 2014 and I get to say "Yeah, that's real wood." For wifi it supports 802.11ac which has a speed limit of 1331Mbps so it should be fine on your network. The North American model also supports all of Telus's bands (Koodo seems to use Telus's towers). It runs OxygenOS which is OnePlus's stock ROM that is extremely close to vanilla Android, just with some extra customization features. I basically describe it as a stock version of a custom ROM. However it does have extremely good 3rd party development support if you ever want to mess with that.

  • Moto Z Play. Right now it costs about $549CAD on Amazon Canada. For the design it isn't as sleek as the OnePlus 3T (in my opinion) but it is still pretty nice if you put on a Moto Mod or one of the back skin covers sold by Motorola (which I suggest you do). The camera is also 16MP and it's pretty good but like most Motorolas it isn't so good in low-light conditions. The Moto Z itself is pretty common however I can't say anything about the Moto Z Play. However there are different Moto Mods and back shells you can use to customize the look to your liking. For wifi it has 802.11n which is limited to 450Mbps, so while not as fast as the OnePlus 3T it should still be plenty fast for your network. The XT1635-02 model should also support all of Telus's bands. And for software it also uses a close to vanilla version of Android.

  • Moto G5 Plus. This one is a little difficult to get in Canada because it's technically for the US. However you can get it on Amazon Canada for about $449CAD. It also has a pretty good design. And for the camera it can be described similar to the Moto Z Play's camera but with a 12MP sensor. Can't say anything about it being common but I know it isn't as common as something like an iPhone or Samsung Galaxy. It also supports 802.11n and as long as you get the right model (XT1687 or XT1681) it should work on Telus's bands. It uses pretty much the same software as the Moto Z Play.

I'm going to attach a list of phones after this I would recommend. However there's one that isn't on the list because it's normally $299 but right now is on sale for $179. So I'm putting that one at the top here.

BLU Pure XR P0030UU 64GB Smartphone (Unlocked, Gold)

$179.99

If you can wait for your paycheck, the ZTE Axon 7 and Honor 8 are both on Amazon.

Pros and Cons of both

ZTE Axon 7 (1/7 but many would argue the Axon 7 is better than the Honor 8)

  • Expandable memory
  • not stock android but close
  • camera is meh
  • battery not replaceable
  • no IR blaster
  • not water/dust resistant
  • no wireless charging

    Honor 8 (3/7)

  • Expandable memory
  • not stock android and not even close
  • Camera is good
  • Battery not replaceable
  • Has IR blaster
  • not water/dust resistant
  • no wireless charging

The only way you're gonna tick off most of the boxes in that checklist is if you double your budget. If you do that, you can look at the Samsung Galaxy S7 and LG V20.

    Samsung Galaxy S7 (4/7)

  • Expandable memory
  • not stock android
  • Camera is amazing
  • Battery not replaceable
  • No IR blaster
  • IS water/dust resistant
  • Has wireless charging

    LG V20 (4/7)

  • Expandable memory
  • not stock android
  • Camera is good
  • Battery is replaceable
  • Has IR blaster
  • NOT water/dust resistant
  • No wireless charging

I'm not too informed on the current budget phones like your ZTE or anything.

Two phones that you could get on Swappa for around $50 would be the Nexus 4 or the HTC One X.

Both good phones but of course quite old now (2013). My Nexus 4 that I use as a backup sometimes can still hang though, with a Marshmallow rom on it (if tinkering with roms isn't your thing this and the One X might not be the best options).

The One X would be for AT&T and can get LTE from them. The Nexus 4 is best suited for T-Mobile and can get HSPA from them.

If you want something newer, you could look into the 1st Gen Moto E. It doesn't have 4G like the 2nd gen, but should be a very good phone for the price point.

I did a little research and I think the best phone that would be brand new would probably be the Blu Advance 5.0

I don't know a ton about it, but it's the #1 best selling unlocked phone on Amazon, and has a lot of positive reviews. Probably a decent bet.

u/PeriKardium · 1 pointr/PickAnAndroidForMe

I am sort of phasing out the LeEco for that reason - I think if something does go wrong well poop for me.

Are you sure about the Nokia? I looked on amazon and both the unlocked 6 and 6.1 were listed as AT/T and T mobile (Ultra uses T Mobile)

Even still, the Honor 7x is something I am considering. It doesn't have Android One, but that doesn't mean I am stuck on a previous android right? As a previous commenter said, its just up to the Honor team to release an update for the phone that has Android 8. If I consider the Nokia 6.1, is Honor 7x still gonna win the ring in your opinion?

Thanks for your help btw :)

u/elvinelmo · 1 pointr/PickAnAndroidForMe

I like the Huawei Honor 6X

The dual-lens 12MP + 2MP rear Camera
Octa-Core processor(16nm) and 3GB RAM, Plus the smart file system allows for gaming, browsing, listening to music or running multiple apps at the same time.

The battery life is good and Huawei has stepped up their game when it comes to phones.

Honor 5x was a “budget” smart phone. Metal design and fingerprint sensor where rarely seen on any phone with close price tag at that time, are becoming more and more standard now. That being said that device has some shortfalls. The performance with the snapdragon was lacking under pressure and the EMUI android skin is not everybody’s cup of tea.

Honor 5x was the first true “budget” smart phone. Metal design and fingerprint sensor where rarely seen on any phone with close price tag at that time, are becoming more and more standard now. That being said that device had some shortfalls. The performance with the snapdragon was lacking under pressure and the EMUI android skin is not everybody’s cup of tea. Today we look at the true successor of the Honor 5x with similar price tag. How did the devices rank against each other? And are the differences worth the extra $80 or so? (Both available on Amazon now for $249 vs $169)

I have no experience with the G5 Plus, but I can definitely recommend the G4 Plus! The 64gb with 4gb of RAM is really nice to have, and I can leave apps in my recents and come back to them right where I left off after several hours. The phone tends to get pretty warm due to the Snapdragon 617, but I've gotten used to it and it doesn't bother me.

I want to add that the G4 Plus has a 5.5" 1080p display, while the G5 Plus's display is a 5.2" 1080p, considerably smaller than the G4 Plus. If you have small hands, you might want to consider the G5 Plus, but the G4 Plus has worked well for me even in my tiny hands - I just hold the phone differently now.

Also, this is just personal taste, but the bezel-to-screen ratio on the G4 Plus is significantly better than the G5 Plus.

And and and the G4 Plus with 64gb and 4gb RAM (in black) is currently $230 in the US. Link

Hope this helps!

Three options for you, as I'm not sure exactly how cheap you want to go ...

Firstly, at a straight replacement for the nexus 5x, I'd go for the Nextbit Robin. I've personally moved to it from a OnePlus X, thoughmy wife has the 5x and she's been similarly impressed with it. In terms of specs, it's damn near exactly the same as the nexus 5x (same CPU, same screen size and resolution, slight upgrade with RAM (3GB vs 2GB in 5x), same storage (32GB)). It also has a finger print reader and has USB-C with fast-charging. It used NEAR stock android, and it's been updated to Android 7.1 just last month. It's currently $130 on amazon, new (by comparison, a new nexus 5x would set you back just under $300 on ebay). The reason it's so cheap is because it was a phone from a kickstarter, and the company got bought out by another. They HAVE said they're going to offer support for another year, but if you're tech-savvy, able to troubleshoot problems and not worried about customer service, go for it. Also the amazon reviews say straight talk should work.

https://www.amazon.com/Nextbit-Robin-Factory-Unlocked-Smartphone/dp/B01D3Q8EGY/ref=sr_1_1?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1499295252&sr=1-1&keywords=nextbit%2Brobin&th=1

Going down the ladder, have a look at the moto e4. Came out last month, can get a amazon ads version for $100. Android 7, fingerprint sensor with fast charging (though it's microUSB so you won't be able to use the same chargers as you do for the 5x), and seemingly compatible with everything. $100, and it'll serve you well as a back-up phone.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071YC3G5V/ref=br_imp_ara-3?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=detail-ilm&pf_rd_r=GWM23XCF3K94EN4V793Z&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_p=3080950002&pf_rd_i=B071YC3G5V

Lastly, the Blu R1 HD. I personally have this as my back-up/foreign travel phone. I didn't expect much, but was pretty impressed with it all told. For amazon ads versions, it's $50 for the 1GB/8GB version, or $60 for the 2GB/16GB version - in my opinion that's $10 well spent for the extra RAM and storage. For a short time it'll do you well.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01F9N5QXI/ref=s9_acss_bw_cg_SCRT_4c1_w?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=merchandised-search-2&pf_rd_r=QR0PSDDNDSE2ES02M7QD&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=a33b8f5e-1ca4-4748-988a-016e0542c30a&pf_rd_i=14613304011

EDIT: All of these will work with straight talk if you have the at&t compatible straight talk SIM.

it's specs are pretty decent other than it's battery life but not for that money. you have better phones within this price range such as the [Huawei Honor 8 ] (https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B01IVV7W6O/ref=as_li_ss_tl?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1484184218&sr=1-1&keywords=honor+8&condition=new&linkCode=ll2&tag=dimz04-20&linkId=ad8de20b403ea2b3d0fa35207ed69c7b) which has better review and specs including a longer battery life, better processor performance, the latest operating system nougat 7. but the camera quality for the c5 is better. key specs for the honor 8: 3000 mah battery life, 4gb ram, Android OS, v6.0 (Marshmallow), planned upgrade to v7.0 (Nougat) CPU, expanable storage up to 256 gb rom with 2 sim slot, internal memory between 32/ 64 gb.

u/xtremedeo · 2 pointsr/PickAnAndroidForMe

I would go with the [Moto G] (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01EZC9WC0/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=dimz04-20&camp=1789&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=B01EZC9WC0&linkId=fd48c800ef5b0dab1012976e5462737e) this one is new so it would be better. It comes with:
Fast 4G LTE speed, an up to 1.5 GHz octa-core processor, 2 GB of RAM, and a bright 5.5" full HD (1080p) display ensures videos and games run smoothly and look great
Enjoy the best of Google Android 6.0 Marshmallow, including Google Play Store, Google Maps, Gmail and more
Offers and ads, including personalized deals and recommendations, display on the phone's lockscreen
Take brilliant photos with the 13 MP HD camera or snap group shots with a 5 MP wide-angle selfie cam. Add up to 128 GB of additional storage with a microSD card
The all-day battery includes TurboPower charging which provides up to 6 hours of use in just 15 minutes

u/TwilightDelight · 1 pointr/PickAnAndroidForMe

Hmmm good point I thought I did but I am getting a bit confused. The GSM arena site you sent has different LTE bands to this site here
https://www.frequencycheck.com/models/OMKZD/xiaomi-mi-a2-dual-sim-global-td-lte-64gb-m1804d2sg-xiaomi-wayne

This is phone that I ordered from Amazon

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07FMPVBQR/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?smid=A2GKOXTPZV7SMA&psc=1

I am specifically looking for B3 (1800 +) and B28 (700 APT) which are listed on the amazon site.

is there a way to verify which version they will ship? like how would I know the phone they sent me does really support these bands?

Thanks

EDIT:

read some of the questions and answers on Amazon, the model number for the device is M1804D2SG which is the same as the one in the link above so it should have the same frequency support and should work fine in Australia.

u/mcxa1mcan · 4 pointsr/PickAnAndroidForMe

I'm actually looking to upgrade from the same phone and I've been really looking at the Nokia 6.1 (2018). You can get it on Amazon for less than $300 ($269).

It should have a decent camera and battery life and it has the network bands to work on AT&T and T-Mobile. The Xiaomi A1 that you were considering does not have all of the network bands required to work well on AT&T. Because it also comes with Android One, which is pretty much stock Android, she will also have the same software experience from the Nexus 5X with timely updates. The fingerprint sensor is located on the back which should be familiar to her as well.

The only con that I can think of is that it's slightly bigger than the 5X. I believe the Nexus has a 5" screen wheareas the Nokia has a 5.5" screen on it. With that said the body itself is not that much different in terms of size. They just fit a larger screen in roughly the same body size.

Let me know if she goes ahead and gets it how she likes it. I'm torn between getting this now and waiting for the OPO 6 so I probably won't buy this immediately and would like to hear from someone who has the Nokia.

Edit: I should also say that the Moto X4 from Google's Project Fi is also another good option. Timely updates, decent camera and battery life. You can get it directly from the Project Fi website for $250 if you activate it on their service. You can immediately cancel that service after activation and then bring it over to AT&T with your own sim card and a prepaid/off-contract service. If you do go for the Moto X4 make sure you get it from Google so that it's the Android One version which will be directly updated by them.

The screen on this one is smaller at 5.2" which may be a better fit depending on how much that matters to her.

u/rtechie1 · 1 pointr/PickAnAndroidForMe

The Sharp Aquos is the best phone on Boost Mobile in recent years. If you want the best phone for $150 in the USA, probably the Moto G4 with Prime.

u/droidman1000 · 1 pointr/PickAnAndroidForMe

How about the [mate 9] (https://www.amazon.com/Huawei-Amazon-Alexa-Leica-Camera/dp/B01MYRABC3/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&qid=1518782037&sr=8-1&keywords=huawei+mate+9&linkCode=ll1&tag=ptablet-20&linkId=b27701b1e4fcf5689d24b342576530a9) if you don't mind the price, has a powerful battery life, good processor performance and other specs. Other best phones for rooting like the moto g5 plus and google pixels first versions under that price limit.

u/Ennuii · 1 pointr/PickAnAndroidForMe

The Moto G4 (or any of the G4 variants) is a good option. For under $200, you might also want to consider the Nextbit Robin. It's $150 on eBay right now or $170 on Amazon. The specs are a significant step up from the Moto E, and it's a good deal since the phone retailed at $400. Downside might be the average battery life. Camera is supposedly only average as well, but that is in comparison to flagships, so it will definitely be better than the Moto E camera.

u/HORIZONx720 · 1 pointr/PickAnAndroidForMe

Moto G plus or Moto g The new 4th gen G phones are really solid for the price. They are 5.5 inch but they are very comfortable in the hand.

u/biersackarmy · 1 pointr/PickAnAndroidForMe

If you can find an extra $25 somewhere, the new Honor 8 would be a better buy IMO. Worth the extra alone to get away from the very mediocre battery life of the S6.

https://www.amazon.com/Huawei-Honor-Unlocked-Smartphone-Camera/dp/B01IVV7W6O/ref=sr_1_1?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1485681828&sr=1-1&keywords=honor+8

Has a MicroSD slot and will definitely remain technologically relevant for more than two years. Nougat update is on it's way and more than likely Android O support.

u/jackarooh · 1 pointr/PickAnAndroidForMe

I can see that you don't like expensive phones, otherwise I would've recommended the Galaxy S7. I also uncommonly recommend to others any phone that is not made by a large manufacturer because I feel as they are the best. But, a brand named BLU has caught my eye recmently and I really like what I've seen of their phones.

Two that I'd recommend for you is the Life One X($150) or the Advance 5.0($60). I am unaware if a Advance 6.0 is coming soon, because I'm not as much of a phone geek as I used to be.

u/Drunk_Panda_456 · 1 pointr/PickAnAndroidForMe

I would recommend the Huawei Mate 9. It is $136 CAD over your budget.

Another option that is in your budget is the Samsung Galaxy S7.

They both have good battery life and great cameras.

u/qualverse · 2 pointsr/PickAnAndroidForMe

> AMAZING at taking photos

yeah, not going to find that in anything ~$200
> one plus 2

looks like you're not shooting that high. this should do the trick, and only $150.

u/Paradise_Brunch · 3 pointsr/PickAnAndroidForMe

Nokia 7.1 might be right up your alley.

It is part of android one program meaning it is basically Stock android. It also has hybrid SIM slot. Listed 222 Euros on Amazon Italy Though it is more expensive than A2 by quite a bit

Processor wise 7.1 is slightly inferior to Mi A2 (636 vs 660). Since you like to listen to music, you might want to reconsider A2 since it doesn't have headphone jack unless you have BT headphones.

Hope this helps.

u/lytical · 2 pointsr/PickAnAndroidForMe

The Essential phone is pretty much today's version of the Nextbit. They're trying to produce a clean Android device that challenges the big manufacturers. They're also currently likely to get acquired themselves but in the meantime they're still supporting the device through updates: https://www.amazon.com/Essential-Phone-Unlocked-Display-Camera/dp/B074BWGRKH/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1540216620&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=essential+phone&dpPl=1&dpID=41pchcdpyNL&ref=plSrch

You might be interested in the Blu Life One X. This website will help you make sure that the phone you choose will fully work with a given carrier (so your not having to check what bands they support).

u/JackSpoons · 2 pointsr/PickAnAndroidForMe

Country/network? Budget?

Can't beat Moto X4 on the low-mid range right now. $165 or $225 depending on ram/storage configuration. Nokia 7.1 is a slight upgrade over the X4 but a decent pick at $350 assuming you aren't on Verizon or Sprint. Galaxy S8 is still pretty solid at $430 or it could be found for less on Swappa.

u/blues65 · 1 pointr/PickAnAndroidForMe

Thanks for the info. So here come my questions....If I spring for the non-ad G4 is there a lot of bloatware? Also, with this being an Amazon deal (I do have Prime), is there shitty Amazon software preinstalled and if so is it tracking everything I do and look at and reporting back to Amazon?

Are those phones completely unlocked? Thanks

Is this it?

Nokia 6.1 seems to be around $220 on Amazon.

Out of Moto G6 and Nokia 6.1, which one do you think is better?

u/OpenBookExam · 1 pointr/PickAnAndroidForMe

Yeah, and the Zenfone is 100 bucks cheaper on Amazon.

For something spec wise comparable to the S7, go for the ZTE Axon 7 which is the a little less than the price of the discounted Zenfone 3.

u/Fraganade · 2 pointsr/PickAnAndroidForMe

I have been thinking about this one as well, though it does not mention band 12 or 17 for LTE and AT&T seems to mainly use this. Would it matter?

Is this the one you got?

Edit: Thanks!

Essential Phone? not android one, but it's pretty much stock android. it's ~$520 (tax included, roughly 330 eur) here in Canada, but availability might be difficult where you live. You might be able to get amazon.com to ship to where you live

Nokia 7 Plus is exactly 400 euros I think, but I think the essential phone is a better buy

u/shufflin_ · 2 pointsr/PickAnAndroidForMe

Not sure if you can get it in the EU but there's a good discount on the Motorola G5 today: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N5MEKSW for $179.

The Nexbit Robin is $145 on Amazon!!! Don't know about international shipping but at that price it may be worth it anyway. Even though I don't need a phone I am thinking about just buying one anyway.

Just a heads up, you can get the Honor 8 for cheaper from Amazon (refurbished option)

u/aceMe007 · 1 pointr/PickAnAndroidForMe

It should get the Android 8 update given that this phone is not that old. xda support is also not bad for this device. You can checkout devices on Swappa or Amazon 32G White

u/Alazeel · 1 pointr/PickAnAndroidForMe

What would you think between the moto4g and the honor honor 6x? From what I gathered the 6x is a little more powerful but Huawei is pretty bad about updates.

u/Jonlife · 1 pointr/PickAnAndroidForMe

Yep, wait for the 5t. If you need a phone right now just get a moto G to hold you over. They cost 129.00 on Amazon

another blu phone that does have a gyroscope and is better than the r1 hd (I did buy this one for my brother and my mom ones the r1 hd)

here is the [link] (https://www.amazon.com/BLU-LIFE-ONE-X2-Smartphone/dp/B01M13TSHR?th=1&psc=1)

u/NowOrNever88 · 1 pointr/PickAnAndroidForMe

Hmm, I was thinking this because its Amazon's #1 in Unlocked Phones. But its $110 it looks like so I was debating this #3:

What do you think of it/how it compares?

u/venom8599 · 1 pointr/PickAnAndroidForMe

Yeah, I think it does. Here's a link on Amazon.

u/Narwhalbaconguy · 1 pointr/PickAnAndroidForMe

It's a pretty nice device, I owned one. The only complaint I have is the fact that the touch latency on that thing is SO DAMN HIGH, so forget trying to do anything that requires precise taps and gestures, like swipe typing or playing games.

If you're willing to go a bit over your budget, you can upgrade and get the Moto G4 for $180. It doesn't have a compass though, so if your area doesn't have good navigation, it'll be difficult to use as a GPS. It doesn't have the touchscreen issue like the G3 though.

u/Franko_ricardo · 1 pointr/PickAnAndroidForMe

Moto G 4th generation. Can be cheaper if you get the lockscreen with ads. Having an Amazon Prime tablet, I don't find them to be that intrusive.

It was recently on sale from Amazon at $259.99 (sorry, not quite $250). You can see the price history here. Apparently it's gone back up, so you may have to be a little patient.

u/kotoshin · 1 pointr/PickAnAndroidForMe

Amazon.com has a flash sale right now for U$117.99 if you have redirect service (it's shipping within USA only).

u/Abe-Solotely · 2 pointsr/PickAnAndroidForMe

I couldn't find it anywhere for the 299, but it is 330 on Amazon.

u/BigSwerve · 1 pointr/PickAnAndroidForMe

Unfortunately the it's out of my budget, unless there is a way to acquire it in the 300-350 price range.

Do you mean this?

u/TheLatios381 · 1 pointr/PickAnAndroidForMe

From my roster of known smartphones, I'd pick the Blu life one x2 because it's cheap, fast charging, decent cameras, and 1080p display.

I was thinking of just getting this:

https://www.amazon.com/Moto-4th-Generation-hands-free-Exclusive/dp/B077YNYFPD?th=1

This isn't the Android 1 edition right? Is it just an update that comes with the phone or a separate type of Moto X4?

u/itsamamaluigi · 2 pointsr/PickAnAndroidForMe

You can get a new Moto G6 from Google Fi for $99 if you sign up for service. You will have to activate it temporarily, then cancel service and swap in your existing Cricket sim card. The most it'll cost is $20 for that.

Edit: nevermind, they're out of stock. However, the Moto X4 is on Amazon for $120, you might consider that. Link.
