For the price, I think I rather go with the Mikrotik RB2011UAS-RM vs the Edge Lite. I played around with the demos on their site last night and boy those things are feature packed.
I was thinking of getting a drive like this and having a proxy cache and some scrips running from that. That would make a really nice set up :)
All USB specs are designed to be bidirectional. You can buy adapters that convert A to Micro B and connect a regular flash drive or you can buy a flash drive that has a Micro USB connector as well.
Though I'm pretty sure you're still right that the Roku Stick won't support it (now I kind of want to find my adapter and try though).
ETA: you can (mostly) use any USB to any USB, you can buy micro to micro connectors (if you're transferring files between two phones they're actually useful) but if you know your way around a soldering iron you can do all sorts of silly things and daisy chain whatever USB to whatever USB you want (say connecting a phone to a PC by using a male A to female B to male B to female Mini to male Mini to male Micro would, if you were really that bored, work).
ETA2: Correction to my statement: USB is not technically bidirectional, it is half duplex. It cannot both send and receive at the same time, but it can send or receive it just has to do one at a time. For example you can't put files on a USB drive while also taking files off, but you can do one and then the other.
I don't have one, but I'm willing to bet no. That isn't flash memory, its a spinning drive, which needs power.
Also depends on the phone. Samsungs work with otg drives. Nexus devices you can use stick mount.

So when you type "adb devices" into the terminal, nothing pops up? I did the same thing you did, and my computer wouldn't let me mount my phone as USB storage. Thankfully adb still recognized it and I was able to push a ROM to storage. While I completely agree with you that there needs to be expandable storage, there is a fix around this now that all modern phones have usb host mode and otg cables are available. I just use my standard flash drives that I carry around and a small otg cable.
They also sell otg flashdrives now like this one which has both a standard and micro USB adapter built in that you can just plug directly into your phone.
If you are worried about space, get the 32GB and then buy a separate OTG adapter. Something like the Sandisk Ultra 32GB/64GB OTG adapter or one that uses MicroSD cards like the Dash Micro. I myself use the Patriot Stellar Lite 32GB. Has a Micro USB for connecting to my Note 5 and a normal USB for connection to my computer. I feel like I've mentioned these quite a lot lately lol. Guess it's because most people don't realize you can still have more storage without a MicroSD card slot (although not a permanent replacement).
This is something that helped me out today. My uncle wanted to transfer a ton of pictures he took on his vacation from his Note 4 to his new Galaxy Tablet without needing a computer. So I was able to easily transfer the pictures with this because of OTG support. It's also helpful if you just want to transfer files to and from your computer without a cable.
Why not use an external drive as and when needed?
