I use my Chromecast as a headless audio system for the backyard... along with a $9 HDMI -> VGA Adapter (with 3.5mm audio out) connected to a $17 mini 40 watt amplifier pushing some $17 outdoor weather proof speakers.

Everything except the speakers are in the garage, outside of the elements.

If I had to guess, it's something like this, just with nothing plugged into the VGA port. Basically something that splits the HDMI into analog audio and video signals, then he just outputs the audio to some speakers. Not a bad idea.

I used this hdmi-vga adapter, and it worked:

I connected the audio output from the adapter to computer speakers.

Thanks, but it's not enough for my needs. I guess I could plug the chromecast into something like an HDMI to 3.5mm audio converter but the experience would be very janky at best.

I guess this will do the job. It's cheaper.

Here's a Amazon search.
