headphones and separate mic is gonna be the recommendation from most these Sennheisers have given me better sound than any "gaming" headset I've owned (which has been a few...) and are super comfortable. If your budget is around $90 you can easily get a better pair of cans than that and pair it with a ModMic if you're willing to wait a bit for shipping or get the Snowflake from Blue Microphones which is well-reviewed and amazon has fantastic shipping times

If you're still dead-set on a headset I can offer a few recommendations as well

I'm fairly certain that they're the Sennheiser HD428.

They're also sold and demoable in Best Buy.

I am a big fan of Sennheiser headphones. Over the years I've picked up a few, and have never been disappointed with them.

In that price range I really like the hd428, I'd buy refurbished for a better price.

I only replace my Sennheisers once the ear padding gets worn down. I've had 3 pairs over the past 10 years, which I think is a pretty stellar track record.

I am currently sporting a set of HD-428s that I take with me when I travel, which is quite often. They've handled a ton of abuse over the past year and a half or so that I've had them and still feel like they're brand new.

Also closed circumaural headsets are the best for Chicago winters and for waiting for trains on the L platform on cold and windy Chicago days.

I have been lurking here and other EDC sites for a while now (years) as well as doing it unconsciously, so my carry is fairly refined despite my age.

This is kind of a long post so be ready to read, I start it with my base carry, which is what I do carry everyday without fail, the rest is what I rotate, carry for certain days and purposes, or carry often enough to be part of my EDC but isn't quite my base carry. You can skim over those if you like, as they aren't quite EDC, I am just posting them to give ideas for others and create an inventory for myself in the proccess.

Base carry

It's divided into black and brown depending on what I am wearing.

Phone goes in my left pocket, knife in the right with my wallet/moneyclip, back left holds my gum and chapstick, back right holds my headphones, keys clip to my belt.

Details for these items will be in the categories below.

Electronics:

  1. MacBook

  2. iPad 16 GB Retina with Smart Case

  3. iPhone 4 16 GB with Otter Box case and Monoprice clear bumper

  4. iPhone 4 16 GB with Monoprice clear bumper as well

  5. iPhone 3GS 16 GB

  6. Old Samsung phone for emergencies

The laptop, comes with me depending on the classes I am taking, it hasn't been coming with me recently because I have been able to do what I need to do with my iPad however.

I have two iPhone 4's because the antena on the first one broke and I had to get a new one, which I accquired from my cousin for setting up his stero and buying him GTA V. I use the second one for games now, or experiments, it comes along when I know I am going to be out of the house for a while. The third iPhone is used for Music and wa s acquired several years ago and I neglected to sell it because I like to keep a backup on hand because redundancy.

The Samsung is for emergency calls, it's battery life is immense and it's rather hard to break, I keep it in whatever bag I happen to be carrying at the time.

  12. Jabra bluetooth

  13. Kingston 64 GB Data Traveler

  14. Iomega eGo 350 GB (350 GB isn't made anymore, I believe.)

Monoprice headphones I just got because the Skullcandy headphones I had broke after several years of abuse. (Which is where the case came from.)

Apple earbuds and ear pods go in my bag as a backup, or when I want to talk and walk around or lay around or when I have my brown base.

The FiiO I use with my Sennheisers to give them a little more ompth, for only 20 bucks it makes quite a diffrence when I am listening to music for peroids.

Jabra bluetooth I don't use much anymore, but I like to keep it in my bag just incase my mic breaks, again, because redundancy. I will also have it on hand to use when gaming.

Kingston Data Taveler goes on my keys and contains my school stuff along with about 10ish bootable OSes, lots of common applications, and other tools. If anyone wants a full list, I will post it, but it's rather long and this is already rather large.

eGo is my general purpose drive, I usually keep a copy of my music library on it. (roughly 100 GB)

    Cord box:

  • 3.5 mm to 1/8"

  • Male/Male 3.5 mm

  • RCA splitter

  • 3.5 mm splitter

  • Monoprice headphones.

  • Lightning charging block.

  • Lightning cord

  • iPhone cord

  • Mini USB cord

  • Mini USB to Micro USB converter

  • Ungrounded to grounded block

  • Apple ungrounded laptop adapter

This gets tossed in whatever bag I happen to be carrying; it also provides a handy spot to keep these cords when I am at the house when I cannot find an extra.

  5. Smiths sharpener

  6. iPhone punch

I do not carry all of my knives on person, I generally only have one on person, but if I have a bag, I keep the others in there.

Flashlight generally comes with me in my left pocket when I am carrying my black set of things, or goes in my bag, however my phone solves the majority of my lighting problems so I have not invested in a better flashlight for daily carry.

iPhone punch comes with me because it helps when messing with phones, or with edges of small cases, or with opening some CD drives.

I'd also recommend the MDR-V6 if you can find it on sale.

Those are good choices for $50. Unfortunately you cannot plug headphones into the xbox 360 cotroller, only the xbox one. The cheapest way to connect them is to use this. You will have to plug in the audio cables to this connector and then plug your headphones into the other end.

This wont work if your friend only has an hdmi cable, there is another way to connect them but you will have to spend another $50 for an adapter. Still I bet your friend would appreciate a nice pair of headphones that they can use with all other devices.

Sennheiser HD428
Pros: Not too expensive, decent sound quality, that 2 year Sennheiser warranty
Cons: Can be painful to wear after a while, dreadfully thin undetachable cord.
In the end, they serve my purposes, but I wish I had gone a little bigger.

Sennheiser makes some of the most comfortable, and best sounding headphones I have ever put on my head. I have been wearing a pair of HD-595's for the past 4 hours, and they still feel great. I can't use them at work though, because they are "open", which means that the sound is not isolated inside the earcup. I can hear myself typing on my keyboard over my music. Not a problem at home, but it would probably annoy my neighbors at work.

At work, I use HD428's. They aren't as comfortable, I can only wear them for 2 or 3 hours at a time without an ear break, but they are sealed, and no sound escapes when they are on my head, and they have pretty good sound fidelity. Closed headphones also make it harder to hear things that AREN'T your music. With audiobooks, you might be able to get away with either open or closed.

I haven't looked recently, but if they have a closed back headphone in the style of the 595, I would get that. Comfort is one of my top priorities when looking for headphones, and these are truly fantastic, but one would really hope so for 150 - 200 bucks.

What kind of headphones would be used with the holder? I can't really imagine a pair of headphones that wouldn't fit on them (unless we're talking about some legit super huge DJ headphones or something). My headphones have padding on the headband and fit just fine on the holder, with room to spare. If you link me to the headphones that would be used with the holder, I could eyeball it for you, lol

I actually feel like the bigger problem may be getting them open wide enough to fit over the edge of a desk. It took a lot of "pre-stretching" the holder but it works. The plastic feels indestructible so it's worth it.

Most people here have already said it, but a nice set of headphones and a clip-on microphone is the way to go. I have a pair of Sennheiser headphones I was able to pick up on sale at Best Buy and a clip-on mic I found at Radio Shack.

Two thoughts on your post:

  • Consider buying a mouse with a side mouse button, you can simply use your thumb to enable push-to-talk

  • Don't go for a "Gaming Headset", like other people have mentioned here. I've never bought one that I didn't have to return within a week.

Maybe these? Or these? It would help to be more specific with what you'd use them for. Leisure? Working?

u/StraightToVideo · 2 pointsr/audio

I'd get a quality, comfortable over-the-ear noise cancelling set for gaming, and a cheaper set of in ear ones like the ones you had to get abused in pockets etc.
I use these at home http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD428-Closed-Circumaural-Headphone/dp/B002DGTGNG/ref=sr_1_2?s=fiona-hardware&ie=UTF8&qid=1314661185&sr=1-2
And a $10-15 pair of earbuds (phillips i think) for running/biking etc.

Thanks a lot for the info. I'm not an audiophile by any means so I'm wondering if you tell me if my equipment is high end enough. The reason I'm asking is because when I took the TIDAL quiz to tell the difference between regular and HiFi quality, the best I could do was 3/5. Anyways, here are my speakers and headphones.

I just upgraded to Sennheiser HD-428 - they're suh-weet!

u/babyslaughter2 · 1 pointr/editors

I don't know if it's just the shape of my head, but Sennheisers fit me better than any other headphone and I doubt I'll ever use anything else.

As far as audio quality they certainly meet my standards. I have these right now: http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD428-Circumaural-Discontinued-Manufacturer/dp/B002DGTGNG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1414908964&sr=8-1&keywords=sennheiser+hd428, but I've tried a few models and I have no complaints about any of them.

u/HappyFaceIndustries · 1 pointr/headphones

i read the >50 headphone buying guide, but those are all earphones. any recomendations for over or on ear headphone that has a halfway decent cord. unlike my last pair which broke in 6 months [damn you stupid cord!] (http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD428-Circumaural-Discontinued-Manufacturer/dp/B002DGTGNG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1414362744&sr=8-1&keywords=hd+428)

u/Noobie_Doobie · 1 pointr/buildastudio

Not really traffic but I have dogs and a small-ish room. So dynamic is probably a good choice. Would you recommend the Encore 100 then?

These are the headphones I have, looks like it is closed-back.

Ableton has a lite version. Should I try that first or does it not have a lot of the features?

u/stingyryy156 · 1 pointr/headphones

To be quite honest, the steelseries usb-soundcard has been working wonders for my pair of Sennheiser HD428's that im using in the meantime, however I guess time will tell how they hold up to a higher impedance headphones.

u/vworpvworp · 1 pointr/AskReddit

I started with Sennheiser 428 since they were less expensive, but recently upgraded to a pair of Audio-Technica M50s and I'm absolutely in love.

I think a lot of it depends on how much you're willing to spend and what you're looking for, though. I found the Head-Fi forums a little overwhelming at times (a lot of different people with a lot of different opinions on a lot of different headphones,) but ultimately really helpful.
