I got the Sennheiser Momentum and I couldn't be happier.

u/MrStudentDude · 5 pointsr/indieheads

I will also plug /r/headphones as a good place to get advice for this kind of stuff.

First of all, don't get the amp just yet. You won't need it unless you can't get your music to a listenable volume. Get the headphones, try them out, and you will know if you need the amp. At this point, you the thirty bucks you would spend on that would be better used towards headphones.

As for what I use, [these] (http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-Momentum-Headphone-Brown/dp/B009QV15DU) are on my head currently. They are very comfortable, basically shut out the world when I have music playing, and sound utterly fantastic. However, they don't handle blazingly fast music as well as slower music, so I wouldn't recommend them for stuff like really technical metal (Stoner and Sludge metal are still great with them.)

As for you... My advice is to do your research. Don't grab the HD598's of the M50X's just because people buzz about them. Both are great, so you can't go wrong with either of them, but you might not be a fan of the "house" sound signature of either of those brands. Go on Head Fi or other headphone websites, watch headphone reviews on youtube (I particularly like Z Reviews.) That way, you know what you're buying and what you're getting into.

Another recommendation for the [Sennheiser Momentum] (http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-Momentum-Headphone-Brown/dp/B009QV15DU).

u/arrcanos · 3 pointsr/hardware

So...here are a few suggestions at this price range:

Audio Technica ATH-M50x: $120 (Probably the most recommended headphone ever. Somewhat boomy bass at times).
http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-M50x-Professional-Monitor-Headphones/dp/B00HVLUR86

Ultrasone HFI-580 S-Logic: $132.98 (Tighter bass than the M50x, typical Ultrasone v-curve, and pretty fun).
http://www.amazon.com/Ultrasone-HFI-580-Professional-Closed-back-Headphones/dp/B00101UHS8

Beyerdynamic DT770: $137.58 (Another classic. Built like a tank. Probably the second "brightest" pair of cans on this list next to the Ultrasone 780).
http://www.amazon.com/Beyerdynamic-770-PRO-250-ohms/dp/B0006NL5SM/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1463101103&sr=1-2&keywords=dt+770

AKG K553 Pro: $172.99 (My office cans. These are fairly flat with slightly accentuated bass. Their mids are a bit veiled. They can be had for $120 on Massdrop sometimes and are probably worth closer to that amount than the $170+ they usually go for).

Ultrasone HFI-780 S-Logic: $173.85 (Currently wearing these right now while while listening to Hotel California. These headphones have a strong v-curve and can be fatiguing due to how bright their treble is. However, with the right music, they can be really, really fun).
http://www.amazon.com/Ultrasone-HFI-780-Professional-Closed-back-Headphones/dp/B00101XVH2

Sennheiser Momentum: $188.90 (I've not heard these personally, so I can't give any appropriate opinion).
http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-Momentum-Headphone-Brown/dp/B009QV15DU

Shure SRH840: $189.95 (I've not heard these personally, so I can't give any appropriate opinion. However, in my limited experience, Shure's tend to be flat and cough boring).
http://www.amazon.com/Shure-SRH840-Professional-Monitoring-Headphones/dp/B002DP8IEK

Sony MDR1R: $199.95 (I didn't spend too much time with these as I wasn't very impressed. A few other options I listed above are much more fun or balanced, but I figured I'd put them on the list anyways).
http://www.amazon.com/Sony-MDR1R-Premium-Over-Headphones/dp/B009A6CZ30

I almost always suggest Audio Technica M50x at this price range. That's not because I think they're the most fun or balanced. It's because they're a great entry level headphone for someone that doesn't know exactly what they want from their daily driver. If someone is sure that they like a nice v-curve, I'm not afraid to suggest Ultrasones or Beyerdynamics. I really want to try out the Sennheiser Momentums, but I haven't had the chance yet.

u/Attainted · 2 pointsr/headphones

I've never heard of them either. Unless somebody comes through vouching for them, I'd say go with your gut and skip 'em. Probably safer to go with something from here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B009QV15DU/ref=dp_olp_used?ie=UTF8&condition=used

Probably that "Like New" listing.

u/Immiscible · 2 pointsr/headphones

For your uses, I'd probably lean towards the Sennheiser Momentum. It's expensive, but it's really a wonderful set of headphones and has much better bass extension and detailing relative to the 25-1 ii. Sennheiser has a small partnership with Apple so, if there's an Apple store near you, you can give the Momentums a try. I've posted a review from headphonia below, I hope it's useful.

I wore glasses and used their headset. I'm also used to wearing these all the time over glasses

I probably wore them for 80% of the time, as they got a little uncomfortable after an hour or so, but after a ten minute break they were fine again, and it's not like they were so sound cancelling that it made much of a difference. Except when our Prometric staff switched and the staff were friends and talked loudly about their other coworkers.

Budget - $100 USD, hard limit

Source - Fiio X1 mostly, sometimes an iPhone 7 (with adapter, of course), sometimes a Microsoft Surface 3

Requirements for Isolation - I don't really need active noise canceling, but a decent amount of isolation is preferred because the less I hear from outside, the less I have to turn up my volume.

Will you be using these Headphones in Public? - Yes

Preferred Type of Headphone - Over-ear

Preferred tonal balance - I probably lean basshead. Obviously I don't want more bass at the expense of mids or highs, though.

Past headphones - Loved my Sennheiser HD518's, sound-wise, but they were too bulky and uncomfortable. Hated my Sony MDRV6's -- sound did nothing for me, and again very uncomfortable. I love my Mee audio M6 Pro's for their sound, but IEM's aren't really my ideal setup.

Preferred Music - Lots of pop (mainly kpop), but I also listen extensively to metal as well as lighter rock.

What would you like to improve on from your set-up - My travel audio setup right now is just my Fiio X1 and the M6 Pro's. I need a decently portable over-ear pair that are comfortable to wear for extended periods (3+ hours at a time) and that provide that good bass while still having clear and detailed mids/highs.

I've got a few I'm looking at right now: this pair of Sony's (MDR XB950/H and MDR XB950B1, which I'm not even sure there's a difference between); the Sol Republic Master Tracks (which I've heard are incredibly comfortable. I wanted the XC version, but can't get them delivered in time); and the Sennheiser Momentum's (which I've heard great things about, sound-wise, but have no idea on comfort).

I was looking around and found these. Thoughts? I acknowledge its above my budget however. The Sennheiser 518's you suggested were 80$ on Amazon. I will look into the Beyerdynamic COP's as well

I'm looking for a little something to replace my Shure SE215LTEs after my friend's dog chewed them up. I looked at the links in the sidebar and the RHA MA750i really caught my eye. I'm loving the metal construction, and the compact connector (I've had problems with the Shures before).

  • Budget - I'm looking to spend around $150 but I can stretch to $200 if absolutely necessary.
  • Source - Phone and iPod
  • Requirements for Isolation - I'd like quite a bit of isolation. I'd be using these everywhere, from airplanes to public transit to walking along.
  • Preferred tonal balance - I love some good bass. I haven't listened to enough pairs yet to know what I want though.
  • Past headphones - I currently have the Sennheiser Momentum Brown (the over ear kind), and the Shure SE215LTE/Blue. I absolutely love the Sennheisers, especially the connector to the phone that I can change the angle on. I quite liked the Shures but the cord was too short to have my phone in my pocket and listen comfortably, and the phone end was too large for my phone case.
  • Preferred Music - I listen to a lot of stuff but mostly rap/west coast hip hop, dubstep/EDM, classic rock and oldies country.
  • Location - Canada

These

(I have no idea what the 200 moda is, sorry.)

u/dicks1jo · 2 pointsr/headphones

Up-front warning: I'm in a bit of a rut when it comes to brand loyalty so take everything I say as a recommendation of something to try on rather than outright buy sight unseen (though that should really be the rule for any audio gear.)

The Sennheiser HD-380 pro is one of my all-time favorites from a comfort and isolation perspective. They're circumnaural, cheap (relatively anyway) and have a fairly neutral response.

If your focus is gaming, the Game Zero may be up your alley. It's very similar ergonomically to the 380, but includes a mic. (Unfortunately the mic is not removable.)

If you're more fashion conscious you may be interested in the Momentum. These things are probably one of the few I've ever tried that beat my 380s in comfort (the other notable one on my mind being bose's QC15.) These guys come in multiple colors, so you get lots of choices.

If you're willing to take the plunge into open back (less/non isolating) the HD 558 has a nice wide soundstage while still having the comfort of the 380. These are likely the least in line with your requirements, but I still highly recommend trying a pair on if there are any shops around you that carry them.

Since you mentioned gaming, I'll also drop mention of the antlion modmic. They are constantly having inventory issues (can't keep up with demand) but it's an interesting product. New version is on the way.

Where should I focus my ~200 USD budget?

u/thesecretbarn · 1 pointr/headphones

What's your recommendation for both portable and desktop use? >$500 US budget. Right now I'm looking at a Fiio E17 and a set of Sennheiser Momentums (over ear). I listen to CD-quality or better lossless files on an iPod/iPhone/MacBook Pro. I don't care about built in iPod controls/mic, but if there's a version of the headphones with that built in, I'll probably get that one. No brand loyalties.

My holy grail headphones would be something in the same design as the Bose Triports (slim, very lightweight, circumaural), but with excellent sound.

Budget - <$500 US. Closer to $350 would be ideal, but $500 if it's worth it (which I think it probably is). I don't currently have a DAC/headphone amp, so I'm hoping to fit that into the total.

Source - iPod, iPhone, MacBook Pro.

Requirements for Isolation - I don't need to block out other sound, but I don't want people sitting next to me in the library to hear my music. This is important to me.

Preferred Type of Headphone - Circumaural preferred, but on the slimmer side--I would also consider IEMs. My only experience with IEMS was a set of $80 Ultimate Ears that I found uncomfortable and difficult to achieve a good seal with. They broke after ~6 years of light use.

Preferred tonal balance - I'm not sure, although I know I don't want a ton of extra bass.

Past headphones - Right now I'm using a set of Sennheiser HD280 Pros at my desk, and some Klipsch S4i's for walking around. Both are fine, but neither really blows me away. I once had 5 minutes alone with some HD800s, and I've been pining after that kind of sound ever since. I know I can't afford to get there right now, but I'd like to get a little closer. Also, I don't want these new headphones to be as big as the 280's, if possible. I find them too big and heavy to wear walking around.

Preferred Music - A little of everything, but a lot of rock. Usually punk, pop-punk, power metal, 80s/90s pop rock--mainly vocal and guitar heavy stuff. I want to clearly hear the bass, but it should never overpower the rest of the instruments. I also listen to quite a bit of acoustic guitar, and some classical piano.

Location - US.

These are pretty good from what I hear. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B009QV15DU/ref=redir_mdp_mobile/178-1615164-6917900. Those or the sennheiser 598

u/ishca · 1 pointr/headphones

I should have clarified, they're $130 used from Dakmart/adgtron. New they're closer to $200 but even then it's not bad if you want something that sounds like that.

I think the Urb on ear is better than the XL because the XL just sounds confused. While I'm not the biggest fan of the On Ear, it does sound like a slightly better Momentum On Ear which is fine because that seemed to be its purpose at the time of its release.

u/ramsr · 1 pointr/headphones

Go for the beats. Probably the best headphones out th....KIDDING! You definitely want the V-Moda M100 or the Sennheiser Momentum. They are both fantastic headphones that are slightly heavier on the bass.

u/hamlop · 1 pointr/GlobalOffensive

The sennheiser momentums are a pretty good example. Not super cheap but very good quality for the price imo.

u/the_monster_consumer · 1 pointr/headphones

If you want the best sound for your money (within your requirements) you should check out the MrSpeakers Mad Dog and Fiio E10. You will get sound from plugging it into the iPad Mini, which would be fine for listening to YouTube videos but not really for listening to music; you're Macbook Pro will drive them quite easily but you will get much improved sound quality using an amp. They isolate well but are really too big to wear out and about - they would be perfect if you shared a dorm room or for studio use. They are super comfortable with huge ear-pads, and have a great clean neutral sound.

If you want to be able to use these on the go the Sennheiser Momentum is a good choice. They are more consumer-grade headphones, but you would get way more out of these with the iPad and the Macbook. They are not as comfortable to my ears, but they are much lighter. They are quite neutral with a slight bass emphasis to my ears.

u/Averruncus · 1 pointr/headphones

Personally I like the AKG K550 over both, a bit pricer, but combines the sound of open headphones with the practicalities of a closed pair. I also like the Sennheiser Momentum Over-Ear.

Of the 2 though I would definitely go for the HD 598 if you don't need isolation.

u/aydiosmio_eseldiablo · 1 pointr/headphones

Apologies for wall of text, and thank you so much to whoever helps me out!

Budget: <$300 (can hover around/slightly above $300)

Source: HTC One, Macbook. I have a FiiO model E06 amp I lost the charger to (can you point me to a charging cable that will work? The amp looks like this).

Isolation/Noise Canceling: I want to use these out and about, so noise isolation (not canceling) is a requirement.

Preferred Type of Headphone: Full Size, Over Ear (Closed), Reasonably Portable. For examples, I'm looking at the [Sennheiser Momentum]
(http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-Momentum-Headphone-Brown/dp/B009QV15DU) and VMODA M100. Anything like these.

Importance of aesthetics: Sound is paramount, but I don't want hideous cans on my head. As long as it looks reasonably cool I won't mind. Aim for this, or any of the above examples.

Owned headphones:

  • ATH-M50: loved these but they broke a while back.
  • JVC HA-RX700: nice, inexpensive over ear stereo headphones but are 1.) too bulky and cumbersome for listening outside the home 2.) are open eared.
  • VMODA Crossfade M80: really enjoyed how these sounded. Only problem is I prefer over-ear sets.

The other pairs I've owned are some inconsequential earbuds.

Primary Genres: Priority #1 Sorry if I'm assigning these bands to the wrong genres

  • Indie Folk/Pop/Alternative. I guess another example is Phoenix.

  • Pop Punk. A Part of Me by Neck Deep is another song indicative of what I like.

  • Acoustic/Indie Rock/Folk (?) See City and Colour, Hozier, Mumford and Sons, Noah and the Whale, Shakey Graves, Keenan O'Meara, The Head and the Heart, Florence + the Machine, George Ezra, Ben Howard, Lewis Watson, Eric Hutchinson, The Old Hello's, Walk Off the Earth, Noah Guthrie, and more. Kind of a jumbled bunch of artists but I don't know how to differentiate between these. Here's another example.

  • "Singer-Songwriter:" some of the above artists kinda fall in here.
  • Modern Soul/Funk. Also see St. Paul and the Broken Bones.

  • Alternative/Indie Alternative(?): See We Were Promised Jetpacks, Two Door Cinema Club, Bastille...

Other Genres: These aren't the types of music I listen to very often, and when I do it's usually when I'm working out; therefore, I probably won't be using these headphones anyway.

  • Hip-Hop See Chiddy Bang, Kid Cudi, Lupe Fiasco.

  • Electronic. Pretty much just any chill, synth pop/indie electronic like this. Passion Pit, The XX

Tonal Balance/Sound Preferences: The takeaway from the genres: not sure. I want a versatile, balanced headphone. No overpowering Bass.

Thanks a ton for any recommendations you share!
u/LordApocalyptica · 1 pointr/headphones

Howdy friends. My headphones recently broke, and I'm in a pickle using old crappy on-ear ones. I used the headphone purchase assistant yesterday but it doesn't quite have the parameters I'm looking for, so I'm hoping to get slightly more customized input.

From the Purchase assistant I am considering:

  • Sennheiser Urbanite XL
  • AKG k545
  • AudioTechnica ATH-M40x
  • Sennheiser Momentum

Now the real parameters that the headphone assistant didn't cover were noise canceling and comfort. Say what you will about Beats, but for all the trash talk audiophiles gave me about having them (they were a gift anyway!) none of their "superior and cheaper" headphones were anywhere near as comfortable (and were often even painful) and did not isolate me like my 1st gen Beats Studios did. A removable cable is also required because I don't want to be stuck with a broken cable at any point, but I much doubt that at my price range I won't find ones with removable cables.

Additionally I am not entirely sure on the Sennheiser front because while I liked the bass coloration from the beats (which is part of why I considered sennies) I produce music, and I think my next upgrade should include that in its purpose.

Also I tried my friend's M50x about 6 years ago and while I enjoyed their sound to a degree, I found them to be a bit uncomfortable. Considering changing pads but a little scared.

    TL;DR of my parameters:

  • Must be noise canceling (passive or active doesn't matter as long as its good). I am open to pad changes to achieve this but would much rather not, since I lack the experience.
  • Must be comfortable
  • Must be over ear
  • I produce music so I am leaning towards a neutral sound profile, and using EQ to bass boost if I really feel that I need it in my life.
  • Detachable cable

Personally I would recommend the Sennheiser Momentums.

http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-Momentum-Headphone-Brown/dp/B009QV15DU

They are a solid pair of headphones with very decent sound for mobile day to day drivers. Which is what I'm assuming you would be using a Bluetooth headset for anyways. These are wired but much better than a Bluetooth headset as far as quality and upkeep go.
