Hello, If you are looking to spend a small amount of money but still have something you can create on, the Ipad would be the best bet. downloading something like Garageband on the ipad would allow you to layer the sounds you record and allow you to create aswell.

What you can do for a microphone is the Shure MV88- that can hook right up to your ipad and record directly into garage band, or if you have an IPhone, you can use the microphone with the dedicated recording app to capture the best sounds possible.

If you don't want to carry the IPad around while you are getting close to the objects you are recording or dont have an iphone as well, you can always purchase a Zoom H1 Field Recorder, they are fairly inexpensive and you can transfer the audio off the device to your ipad if you get a SD card reader for the IPad.

For an instrument you can plug in to your IPad, IK Multimedia IRig is small, lightweight and cheap.

Overall with the Mic and keyboard, you are looking at $350-$400 for a light weight package.

Have you looked at the Shure MV88? It's a small mic that plugs into the lightning port of an iPhone. Sounds really good for $150. I've been using one for Snapchat lately, really happy with it (my podcast mic is a Shure SM7B).

There are lots of excellent options to getting surprisingly high quality audio direct from your phone. Clearly, it won't be 'studio quality' as a studio by definition is an entire recording environment plus expensive microphones and skilled technicians. However, at home, with a decent plug in microphone, Garageband or similar software, you can get really good results.
I actually created an entire playlist on recording your piano from the point of view of doing everything yourself without needing to make massive investments. It shows you how to improve basic 'point and shoot' to recording audio separately and simple video editing to improve visuals. I bought the Shure MV88 condenser Mic for iOS devices (there is also an MV88+ model that works on any type of device). I also have a free eBook that goes step by step into improving home audio.
You can buy an attachment for many phones that offers good demo-quality audio for around £100. There tend to be more offerings for iPhone, something like this or maybe this would work well. THere's also something like this that would work on any phone, and would give better results than just the mic on your phone.
There are also a few good recorders out there in your price range that would give you good quality like the Zoom H1 or the Tascam DR-05. Both Tascam and Zoom have a range of options for digital recorders, and some of the Zooms also function as an audio interface that you can plug into the computer. I have the Zoom H6, which is outside your budget but a fantastic recorder for the money.
One word of warning, don't be suckered in by cheaper alternatives for mics or recording equipment. You get what you pay for, and anything under about £50 in either department isn't going to be too much better than the mic on your smartphone.

Got some of them for talent once, so long as you walk them through how to use it, the recordings turn out pretty great. Maybe on the $$$ side though?

I can help if you are using an iPhone. I believe garageband is free and records multitrack full quality with decent editing and mixing options. You can even use 3rd party plugin apps! You'll need an USB adaptor to connect an audio interface. you'd be best with this usb adaptor because it also get's power from your charger. This does two things for you, 1) your iPhone won't die on you 2) your iphone will have enough power for the interface. Then you can get something like this behringer. Then all that's left is grabbing a few SM-57 mics, or a shure drum mic kit](https://www.amazon.com/Shure-DMK57-52-Drum-Microphone-Kit/dp/B0002E51C6) to get a usable recording. Toss the big one on your kick, then one 57 on the mic, and then the other two over head pointing at your cymbals and toms. this set up will allow you to get pretty decent recordings, especially if your kit is in a good sounding space. Alternatively you can get an omni/stereo mic for iOS and mess around with placement to get a passable sound. This is cheaper, and still good enough for a more vintage vibe
I just got this with the intention of doing the same. I just recorded my first set with it (my first set ever) and it works great. You can really hear not only yourself really well but also crowd response.

I’m thinking about getting a Shure MV88 microphone that connects via Lightning for iPhones and using Ferrite. But if you have another host or someone calling in I think it’s a bit more difficult.
