LEO here. I bought a series 1 about a month ago and haven't had any issues. I sometimes bang my watch going into people's houses or any tight spots and it's still holding strong. A bunch of the guys in my command have Apple watches as well. Some without any protection and I haven't heard any complaints. I decided to use a Spigen case on mine. I have a similar one to your 2nd example. The Spigen Tough Armor. It includes a built-in screen protector. It's working well so far.
I also considered your first example, but was concerned that it might scratch the watch after sliding it on/off repeatedly.
I don't really like the look of screen protectors as I can usually see the edges and, IMO, they take away from the look of the device and screen quality. I also don't want to have my watch in a case full time. However, I wanted something to protect my watch when working in the yard, on the car, etc. This case was the best I could find to protect both the screen and the watch. It's fairly easy to put on/take off. It looks good enough that I could leave it on for a quick trip in to town if I didn't want to bother taking it off right away.
I could not find many options that included the built in screen protection. I wish I could find something comparable that would not require me to remove the band to install/uninstall .
I would also like to have one that was easy to install/uninstall and covered the digital crown to keep out dust when mowing, etc.

If you have the 42mm watch, this is a good one. It has a built in screen protector. The Spigen website says it's backordered, but it seems to be in stock on Amazon + it's cheaper there too.

I have the older version of this case. It will withstand whatever you throw at. The old model came with two screen protectors and that's what I put on it. The case is a little bulky but it looks good and it matches the black sports band.

I’ve been using this same Spigen case for three years now. I bought it when I got my Series 1 Watch and it has carried over to my Series 3. I also bought one for my girlfriend when she got hers. No issues whatsoever, and it’s protected my watches from all the bumps and other unfortunate contact they’ve had to deal with. A proverbial knock on wood will follow this, but I’ve never had a screen scratch, crack or any case damage whatsoever.
