You really need to check out the Essential Atlas next time you visit a bookstore: Star Wars: The Essential Atlas https://www.amazon.com/dp/0345477642/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_D2dDDb8W3WJ5S

The first section is an in depth description of the galaxy as told by a veteran space to a new recruit in a spacer organization. It details the many types of celestial bodies found in the galaxy and how they complicate travel.

If you want a good star wars book, get the [Star Wars Essential Atlas] (http://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-The-Essential-Atlas/dp/0345477642#). This book gives a detailed account of the entire history of the entire galaxy, including a list of planets, and maps of the galaxy during each war.

The map is based off of one in this book: https://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Essential-Daniel-Wallace/dp/0345477642
For the most part the yellow circles refer to ones that have individual descriptions in the book. I made this map to for use in a starwars RPG game I'm running.

Edit: I believe there is an online companion if you're not fan enough to buy the book.

Prior to the acquisition by Disney, Star Wars had an official atlas showing the galaxy and where the various planets were. SWTOR had to follow this guide for the planets that were in the atlas.

Now that the atlas isn't canon, when BioWare adds a new planet I'm guessing they just pick an appropriate location.
