The fact you're using wireless G will probably be your problem. You'll need to upgrade it to a wireless N model, such as this one

These inexpensive wifi dongles are proven to work OOTB under Linux, and on the T60 as well as three other Thinkpads. You can research each one as you wish:

  1. Trendnet TEW-424UB - Wireless G 2.4GHz $18 at Amazon

  2. TP-Link TL-WN821N - Wireless N $16 at Amazon

  3. Panda Mini Wifi (b/g/n) 150Mbps Wireless-N 2.4GHz USB Adapter $14 at Amazon

If you want something on the cheap I had no problem with a TP-Link USB dongle. Double-check though because not all of them are atheros.

When I found the realtel nic I had to be lacking, I used this one, fairly reliable, and certainly more performant. http://www.amazon.com/TP-LINK-TL-WN821N-Wireless-Adapter-300Mbps/dp/B002T4D3M2.

It uses an atheros chipset, which is among the best supported once on Linux

I have a tp-link usb adapter and it works GREAT! Dual band N and my living room pc gets great signal through 3 walls and about 30-40 feet.

EDIT: this one is the one I have, but I dont see a price on amazon anymore.
