When I found the realtel nic I had to be lacking, I used this one, fairly reliable, and certainly more performant. http://www.amazon.com/TP-LINK-TL-WN821N-Wireless-Adapter-300Mbps/dp/B002T4D3M2.
It uses an atheros chipset, which is among the best supported once on Linux
I have a tp-link usb adapter and it works GREAT! Dual band N and my living room pc gets great signal through 3 walls and about 30-40 feet.
EDIT: this one is the one I have, but I dont see a price on amazon anymore.
