Some risers are only built to be powered by sata. If your riser only has a 6pin port on it and comes with 6pin to sata cable that is a SATA Only riser, you have to use the provided Sata cable to power it. If you plug a 6 pin directly into it from a psu you will cause damage to your system. There are plenty of risers that can be powered with 6 pin but you have to get flexible power risers for that. The generic risers you see all over the place are sata only.
This is a sata only riser and can only be powered via the sata connector NOT the 6pin directly from psu.

Note the various power options on the second one, it is built to handle any of those power inputs. Although the first riser appears to have a 6pin connector on it, it is only designed to be used with the included sata cable.
Currently using these risers and of course they come with the infamous Sata to six pin adapters. I’m only using one Sata cable from PSU to each riser’s SATA adapter but I’m still worried about fire. Would it be better to use molex peripheral cables from the PSU>these adapter>riser? This is a 7 card 1080ti rig with one HX1200i and one AX1200i.
