All the crying, all the drama, all the FUD about dongles, it takes $27 (1-2% of the price of a new Mac) to upgrade all my devices to USB-C.

Seriously, #donglelife looks like a misinformation campaign initiated by PC vendors with unsold computers and shells with USB-A holes.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B011UMDIVO/ref=pe_385721_51767431_TE_dp_1 this one, which seems to be out of stock now on Amazon UK though. USB-C to displayport cables are usually cheaper still. My understanding is that these cables are almost passive, so there should be little compatibility problems. According to my previous link, to the pluggable thing, the laptop provides two Displayport signals on the one port using thunderbolt standards. And this cable likely just uses USB 3.1 alt-mode DP signals (which is technically also how thunderbolt 3 is implemented I believe).
So buy a new HDMI cable?
