I just bought a new one a couple months ago. I think this is the third manufacturer I've used. All the others would occasionally drop my phone. So far this one has been very sold. No unexpected drops no matter how rough the road is.
It does shake, but that's to be expected since the phone is pretty heavy.
The head has a motorized grip that has arms that wrap around the edges a bit.
You press the phone into the holder and the pressure at the top engages the motor and clamps down.
To release there is a button on each side of holder.
I guess there is a battery in it because it will release even if it's disconnected from power.
It also charges the phone.
