I said this in the other thread: If you're an engineer, do not buy a $1500 Tablet PC. Instead, get whichever laptop you want plus a $60 external USB tablet. Your wallet will thank me.

Well if you want to get him something related to web design (I assume you do, otherwise why would you be asking here?), you need to know what he does or doesn't have already. I would suggest a graphics tablet, nice computer mouse etc. but he's likely to have those already.

Maybe get him some small non-free software. E.g. ArtRage (a nice little drawing program I'm fond of for $40). Or some web design literature:

  • Smashing Books;

  • Books on Amazon;

  • Some eBooks;

  • Subscription to some magazine?

    If you get him a recently published web-related book chances are good that he won't have it. I would love to get that kind of thing myself.

IMO, don't even consider anything other than a Wacom. For your price point, get a Bamboo and if you feel you need something bigger/better, sell it and upgrade to an Intuos. I have had an Intuos 3 for several years and love it. The new version is very slick but I don't really have a need to upgrade.

In regards to your specific points:

  1. Photo editing is wonderful with a tablet. Both Photoshop and Lightroom are great with a tablet. Much faster and more natural than using a mouse.
  2. If you want to pick up a fantastic painting / drawing program, check out Painter Essentials, which is a lite version of the full Painter. It really brings the tablet to life (very different than Photoshop's painting).
  3. You can get a refurb Bamboo for under $50, but they aren't much more brand new.
  4. There isn't much of a learning curve, though learning to use the hotkeys (Intuos only) will make you more productive. Windows 7 has some very good built-in tablet support.
  5. This is where Wacom tablets shine - they tend to be more responsive than other tablets. They are the gold standard for good reason. You can also place a sheet of paper over the tablet to give it more texture; it will not affect the tracking/sensitivity.
  6. I have a medium Intuos; it is a great size. I haven't found myself wishing it were bigger, but maybe I've just used it so much that I'm used to working with that size. I'm sure that I would love a larger tablet, but I think (especially for photo editing) you can get away with a smaller one. Depending on your style, a larger tablet is more important for sketching / painting.

    Edit: One final consideration - Intuos comes with a mouse - If you are considering using the tablet as a complete mouse replacement (I use mine in addition to my mouse), I would stay away from the 'small' tablets.

I've only owned this one tablet ever, but I like it pretty well.
Wireless would be nice, but just depends on your budget and preference.
The precision on the low end model seems to be spot on as far as I can tell.

i use the 'old style' classic Logitech G15 & the new Logitech Performance MX.
i also suggest a wacom, refurb ones on amazon are 42$ or 52$(w/ touch)

I like the Wacom Bamboo, and it looks like you can get it refurbished for ~60

My gosh, that's a lot of input, just what i need! Is this the type of tablet I'll need?

The majority of the time I only use Dan Awesome's Rage maker (www.ragemaker.net), but I'll occasionally use GIMP for particularly detailed panels or animated comics. I used GIMP for the final panel in this case.

I also have an old Bamboo writing tablet which I use to draw, although I just use a mouse or trackpad most of the time. I ended up using the tablet for this particular comic, because I decided to draw full bodies.

For touch based drawing it's not bad, I know I couldn't stand mobile sketchbook on my ipod touch. If you're serious about learning digital art though, I would consider investing in one of these to start out with

Are they?
