The Realmgate Wars series of novels starts with Gates of Azyr. They aren't the best, unless you love Stormcast, but they should be read consecutively to make the most sense.
There are a few novellas that aren't part of the series but are generally considered better, especially City of Secrets.
Alternatively, The Age of Sigmar book (says "Mighty Battles in an Age of Unending War" on the cover) is supposed to cover the background of the setting. I personally haven't read it so can't tell you how good a job it does of explaining things. https://www.amazon.com/Warhammer-Age-of-Sigmar-Book/dp/1782539603
Ah so I have to look elsewhere than the Skirmish book to find the Warscrolls for rest of what we'll need to play.
This isn't the core book: https://www.amazon.com/Warhammer-Age-of-Sigmar-Book/dp/1782539603/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1497232867&sr=8-8&keywords=age+of+sigmar
