I actually hooked up one of my Wii's to my HD this weekend. No component inputs, so I had to order one of these.

Works fine in 480p/16:9.
Also, if you ever reclaim your Wii, you should definitely homebrew it, it's a great emulation machine.
Do yourself a favor and just order a Wii2HD adapter so you can use a HDMI cord. Games look so great on my 50" Bravia.
They are cheap and i have had this specific one for about 2 years now and it has caused me no issues.
If it helps, I've used one of these HDMI adapters on my Wii for years and never had any issue with it. They're only $10.
That being said, the Wii U will play original Wii games, and has some great games that your kiddo might like as well. My son (also 5 years old) really likes Yoshi's Wooly World and Mario Kart 8. We've gone through Breath of the Wild together twice as well; though he hands off the controller to me whenever he spots bad guys or has trouble maneuvering Link somewhere (really neat to watch him work out what to do in the puzzle shrines though).

you'll get beautiful 480p image,for me it's the best image you can get on PSO.The BB hi-rez image is not that pretty because of the old year 2000 textures.imho.
