I used to use my PS3 controller on PC, but I got tired of messing around with Better DS3 (the program to make the controller work).

These days, I tend to switch between controllers a lot, but this is probably my favorite. It feels like a PS3 controller, but is plug and play due to using Xbox controller drivers and the buttons are labeled properly, which I kind of need since switching between Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft layouts messes with my brain. I also like the Xbone controller quite a lot although I've noticed the analog sticks seem to have a slightly larger travel distance than other controllers, which makes my reaction time seem slower. Totally fine for most games, but I always swap to a different controller when playing something like Furi.

One of my friends uses this controller and really likes it, although I'm not sure how he has it configured. I believe it fits all the criteria you listed in your post.

I was having a similar issue.

I had to clear out the original configuration from the first time I setup the pi (it makes a controller configuration for each 'learned' controller, kept defaulting to the old settings). I had to navigate into /opt/retropie and look around, but I don't remeber the exact directory.

I'm using a wired USB knockoff playstation styled controller, but it supports Xinput and some other things so its recognized as a Microsoft Xbox controller. I had to install the Xbox drivers to get my R2/L2 lower trigger buttons recognized.

Also, wireless controllers seam super finicky, theres alot of posts, but I guess you have to activate things in a rather precise order. I've not got one to test, or I'd see what I could do.

This is the one I use. There's keyboard/mouse controller fix stuff in the sidebar- in particular, there's a link to a fouse fix in the Beginner's Installation Guide- but I bought a controller just to play Dark Souls because I figured that would make things exponentially easier. (It helps with other games like Metal Gear Rising and Final Fantasy VII too!)

this has been great for 90% of what I've played. I use the right joystick as my C pad for N64 games and it isn't perfect, but it also hasn't made anything unplayable. Great controller for under $20.

I personally use this controller. Amazing deal for the price in my opinion.

I couldn't find an inexpensive GameCube controller that worked right. The thumb pads didn't work after short use. I've used this since June of last year with the dolphin emulator. I mostly play Godzilla and racing games though.

Well they're bad, but I essentially just picked a random one out of the list. Something like this one would be a better example.

The point is that there's plenty of 3rd party options out there for controllers so you don't need to grab the full 50$ Xbox One or PS4 controller if you're going that route.

Unfortunately, it's extremely difficult to enjoy 3D games on keyboard and mouse settings. You can find a controller easily on amazon for $20 and they last forever, so they're a great deal! "Best Seller" https://smile.amazon.com/Controller-Gamepad-Computer-Windows-Android/dp/B00OAYHIRA/ref=sr_1_3?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1537488831&sr=1-3&keywords=pc+controller . It's $20 and as long as you don't throw it around they last forever. Really not much of a reason NOT to buy one.

I was using a "ZD" controller, like this one. (amazon link)
I'm not sure if they are handled the same by windows since I know Xbox controllers have some extra support by the windows OS itself.

Some Z.D controller. I can't find it, but I've never had issues with it before and Windows recognizes it as a 360 controller.

EDIT: This one

Buy a Steam Controller (TM).

However, because Fuck Paying More than $20 For A Controller(TM), These are pretty amazing.

Basis Guidelines: Make sure you get an XInput-compatible controller (like the above), or a Dualshock 4 controller. It will handle most everything you throw at it (with the exception of comfortable Genesis/Saturn gaming).

ZD-V+ controller

This is because it has the best of two worlds for me. First, I like Sony's PS controller design which the controller has. However, it is also a xinput controller (with a Dinput mode too) which means it works with Windows games by default and the buttons will reflect within the game.

If mine ever breaks and I can't get a new one, I would go with a standard Xbox controller or another xinput one. The standard Windows support is absolutely invaluable.

I haven't tried these yet, but I recently bookmarked the ZD controllers after reading a lot of praise for them from people who prefer them to the Logitechs:
