If you don't have one of these, get one. It'll be more useful than any textbook you've ever bought.

That goes for you too. Yes, I mean you.

That being said, you should google "limits and fits." There is even a handy table (contained in the Zeus Book I linked to) that has all the info you might need. It's almost like someone has encountered this kind of problem before, and decided to be helpful and write it all down.

You need to take into account the flex in the materials you are using (the flex in the plastic, does the mating part pinch or go obround when squeezed, etc).

Take out one of the other fittings.

Use a thread gauge and something like http://www.amazon.co.uk/Precision-Reference-Drawing-Toolroom-Workshop/dp/B0000CLZUO - There will be something on the web I suspect, to find out what thread it is.

Congrats on someone actually doing preventative maintenance, and noticing something not right!

If you're working for an engineering company you should have one of these in your pocket.

I was taught in metric (Born in 1960) but I did my apprenticeship with an American company who used inches in their products, mostly. Apart from the ones going to Germany, which were metric.

So I kind of use both, depending which is more appropriate.
