Nice little tank.

A few things that helped my betta in his 3 gallon were a leaf to rest on and also something to swim around/hide in.

I thought the leaf was an odd idea at first, but if you put it about an inch below the waterline it works well. My betta didn't use it at first, but once he got acclimated to it I could catch him resting on it quite often. I think it works well because they have to get up to the air to breathe, but sometimes enjoy resting, this gives them an area to perch and easily get air.

The vase took a little longer for the betta to get used to it, and I was worried about it being sharp and cutting him. However, he swims in and out of it no problem now, but I don't think he uses it to hide much, he's pretty bold. Still gives him something more to do since the tank is so small.

Here's a good basic care guide for bettas.

For this betta specifically, if he has swimming issues, try to keep him in a shallower tank (still 5+ gallons, but a longer tank as opposed to a taller one) and try to keep plants and stuff near the top so he can rest on them. A few of these betta beds would help him too, with not having to swim around so much.

I would still fill the tank all the way up, more water means better stability and water quality. Just decorate it strategically.

Hello Shep! OP, hope you don't end up so busy saving the galaxy you forget to feed her :(

As for fishtank decor I couldn't find any rocketship ones, but I did find these that look cool, if you'd like to go for sort of an "antique Prothean" theme.

https://www.amazon.com/RIBBON-PRODUCTS-030157015909-Environments-Crashed/dp/B00C3ESXYG (this one looks great for an "ancient" look but it's small, the other one seems to be a lot bigger)

Glowing plants would definitively help bring up the "alien" look I think. Uniclife has a bunch! Or a "Kahje" look if you put in some pink jellyfish alongside the "Prothean ruins" :P

My local pet store called PAWS Natural Pet Emporium! I did find this one online for you, it’s not exactly the same but there is two different versions! I had a problem with my Betta eating the shrimp food and found these nifty things. If you wanna hide them under moss, or just use them as is, your Betta shouldn't be able to get to them. Has slow shipping though :(

I have a dragon similar to yours as well as this one and I love it. The fish do too.

Your tank looks really nice. I love the tree! I'd like to see an update when you have it all done

  • its an AquaNano 40, 52 litre tank (but 12 litres of it is the filter itself at the back).
  • I have 5 plates, 5 neon tetras, 5 clouded mountain minnows and 2 golden albino algae eaters. (I had a few more but lost them to an ammonia spike this week :(. )
  • The plant behind the vase is a java fern and moss attacked to a pipe, I'm not sure about the other plants actual names :/.
  • I got the broken vase from Amazon, its a Rosewood product (uk site: Rosewood Egyptian Urn Aquarium Decor

Drunk ordered it on Amazon by accident. It's not real wood. I had to saw off a leg of it for it to fit. The dwarf mouthsuckers love to go in the hole I made though.

Thank you! I am pretty happy with how it turned out as well!

I actually bought the dragon head decoration and other supplies at a local pet store, but I can tell you it is by Blue Ribbon Pet Products (specifically Exotic Environments product line). If you look up "Exotic Environments serpent head tomb ornament" or something similar, you should find it! Here it is on amazon: https://www.amazon.com/RIBBON-PRODUCTS-EE-5646-Environments-Serpent/dp/B0065KGJ68/.

u/Anonylesss · 2 pointsr/turtle

So I would suggest platys/mollys or a very hardy schooling fish like black phantom tetras. http://media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/236x/c9/51/63/c95163a4c29cb7369e1268bb7e82ba1b.jpg Those are very cheap at petcos and are a smart buy. The point of the fish mainly is they distract the turtle and the school never really will get caught as long as you have some obstacles the fish can swim thru but the turtle can not. Something like this http://www.amazon.com/Marina-Decor-Mangrove-Root-Large/dp/B0032G6XIW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1417079855&sr=8-1&keywords=mangrove+aquarium Now with that the answer is simple. Plecos. People who say they do not thrive in turtle tanks and get bit are wrong. I have 3 tanks of diamondback terrapins which in most peoples opinions are one of the better hunting turtles. My plecos in all the tank are big enough that the next generation of them are being born. The first few days the turtle will chase the phantoms. Then it will occasionally attempt to bite one when it comes to eat some fish/turtle food. Right now my phantoms are so comfortable they will wait next to the diamondbacks mouths and eat the food the diamondback wastes. I also have a tank of 4 adult reeves that has around 200 or so platys /mollies that just today I noticed a school of baby plecos in the corner.

This is my usual reply if you have any further questions on it feel free. Source 16 years of breeding fish and turtles in the same tanks.

DOTHISDOTHISDOTHIS I mean, if you like it that is. I'd totally do that if I had a fish tank.

u/bramblerose21 · 1 pointr/bettafish

I actually bought these It’s several leaves and 2 suction cups. I like to replace it once a month so it’s lasts a while. My betta loves lounging on them :)

u/d8ne4m6 · 1 pointr/bettafish

Betta wouldn't eat vegetables on the fork or skewer or plant based large hard flat pads as Shirakura EbiDama or Bicom shrimp food. If you feed shrimp through clear tube, to deliver food in the dish, leaving tube over the food that turns into powder fairly soon is an option too (Biomax 3, Shrimp King protein, or grind into almost powder regular food). Be careful with powders or they could spread everywhere and foul water, causing betta get sick. Remove uneaten food, siphon it out for powders, via air tubing.

If your shrimp is not almost betta sized, some shelter could be used as shrimp only zone, this one could be made even from pvc pipe, if cover ends somehow.

This is the one I have: Amazon Link

It's all submersible, and it doesn't need an air pump. The only downside is that the bubbles it puts out are so fine that they spread through the whole tank making it seem cloudy.

It is [this anemone] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00NAFS1T4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_rfCAxb0BCCPJ8)! I had setup the 3 pieces of slate to make a semi-volcanoe cave with an opening in the top. However, my betta hates the anemone and I think it looks beautiful waving around in the current, so I was thrilled when I saw it fit perfectly in the top gap!

u/DrSkyentist · 1 pointr/bettafish

I could imagine what you must think, moss balls at some of the pet stores around me are as high as $10 each! I got mine from a pretty reputable seller on Amazon for $15 for 10 I got them the next day, did not expect the two bonus ones so that was pretty awesome of them. They also included instructions on how to properly rinse them to make sure they're safe for addition to the aquarium. I since I'm starting the whole thing off fishless, and will be testing the water almost daily I'd be able to detect any danger from them well before I add any betta into the tank.

The tank's front is bowed so the structure is magnified quite a bit in the photo. It's only about 4" x 4" x 8" tall. The tanks is 12.2 in L x 8.3 in W x 12.3 in H (minus about an inch from the top). It still does take up a good amount of the available real-state so if I notice the fish not utilizing the interior I have no issue removing it.

I worried that the tank would not be able to produce enough sustenance for too many plants, since I've read that moss balls can be quite greedy and I do only plan on the one betta being in there. I like the moss balls a lot, they look like little green tribbles, so I decided to go with the fake interior plant. Plus, no need to trim roots or remove dead leaves.
