I've got a Contour Roam as well, which I like as a helmet cam because I'm a terrible, vain creature and think conventional action cams stuck to the top of helmets look awfully silly.

If you're less vain -- or if you can find a Contour Roam at a reasonable price point, or you want better video quality more than you want to look cool -- I'd also recommend a Yi 4K (presently $170 on Amazon, but you'll probably want a ~$15 - $40 waterproof housing, and also some way to mount it). I've got one that I've mounted under my handlebars (in addition to wearing the Contour on my helmet) and I'm very impressed by it. It's got a removable battery, too, and you can get extra batteries real cheap.

One final option, if you're inclined to the action cam form factor but don't want to shell out $170 for a Yi 4k (or even more for a GoPro or what-have-you) is the recently-announced and very well-reviewed Yi Discovery, which as far as I can tell (though I don't own one, so no guarantees) is more-or-less the same thing as the Yi 4k, sans the mostly-useless image stabilization feature and with slightly slower frame rates (4k @ 20fps, 1080p60), but it's only $60, which is a steal. It uses the same batteries and other accessories as Yi 4k.

EDIT
Also: r/bikecammers is a good place to ask for advice on this stuff.

If you want a good all-round prime, the Sigma 30mm f1.4 is amazing. That focal lenght is extremely versatile, and the lens has the highest sharpness score for Aps-c e-mount lenses on dxomark. Not to mention the super fast 1.4 aperture that gives you great bokeh.

I own an a6000 with the kit lens and ever since I bought the sigma 30mm, I basically haven't touched the kit lens.

I have a set of Cokin style filters with a standard holder and several adapters.

Something like this

u/Mclovinintheoven · 2 pointsr/photography

What are the most important accessories to get starting out?
I'm using a Nikon d3100 with the kit lense, and I'm looking at these

A red filter is typically necessary. I bought this cheap one, and it worked wonders:

I didn't use any strobes, I simply put the GoPro on a $10 selfie stick and had really good luck with it.

u/thirtydirtybirds · 2 pointsr/scuba

Budget option:
I've used these and they are awesome! the lens and snap on holder are very secure. You don't really need the 50+; it's too red. Stick to the 5-20 or 20-50 for any warm water dive. Haven't used in cold water yet.

(bought the zero shutter count one from Alissons Garage Sales; Was in brand new condition when it came.)

This is the link for the D3300 i just bought. I got this with the kit lens and also bought the wireless adapter, a bag, and this http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005197472?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00 accessory kit that had everything to get started, two extra batteries and a 64gb memory card all for appx 520 with prime shipping. I hope this helps if you decide to go the D3300 route...

u/Fat_Ass_Reddit · 2 pointsr/xbox360

I used a Canon 50mm prime lens and a macro lens adapter that came with a wide angle lens, like this one.

u/vinzigogosi · 2 pointsr/daddit
u/HybridCamRev · 2 pointsr/bmpcc

Less obvious features I love - built-in mini-XLR with phantom and free copy of Resolve Pro. This really is a good deal.

Less obvious feature I hate - the fixed LCD. Blackmagic knows how to build a flip screen - they do it on URSA.

Bonus: yes - get the $2495 6K plus a $249 Sigma MC-11 adapter and use EF lenses for both cameras. And I would get the $799 (on sale) full frame Sigma 24-35mm f/2.0 instead of the crop sensor 18-35.

Hope this is helpful and good luck with your decision!

I'm a serious but decidedly amateur photographer, shooting a D60 and thinking about upgrading this year to a D7100. I need a polarizing filter to help with glare and color saturation on my landscape shots.

Is this kit a good buy or is there a catch? It looks good but I don't always trust Amazon, even with tons of reviews. Wanted to know what you all think.

Should I perhaps look at another one from this list? Perhaps one that is JUST the polarizing filter? (I assume if I get the kit I'll learn to use the others as I go)

u/FutrePhys · 1 pointr/gopro

Well I'm not going to be using it for anything extreme, so I wouldn't be putting it through anything with high impact. I'll probably be using the camera mainly for recording trips and stuff like that (Roller Coasters, Amusement Parks, Hiking) Nothing crazy. So I think it would be a good starting point. If I realize that I need anything more reliable for an upcoming activity, I'll look into more reputable equipment. The one I got was this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00PLBXUMS/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

u/magus424 · 1 pointr/photography

this set which has 52, 58, 62, and 67, though I find myself needing a 55mm now (I'd thought it came with more)

Although, the adapter rings look a lot like the full set that came with my led ring light....i wonder if I could just swipe the 55 from there :D

e: nevermind, sites are saying the 50mm 1.4 has a 58mm filter thread; i hadn't actually tried a filter on it yet XD

e2: btw, the holder's the cheap part - you'll still need to find good quality filters for it; the cheapest plasticy ones won't be the best quality.

Here's a mount kit that contains various mounts, including the ones I'm pretty sure you're talking about, on sale right now for $26.99. They haven't failed me yet. People say they're better than the official GoPro mounts and it also comes with a bag you can carry the shit in.

u/Qeldroma311 · 1 pointr/gopro

Buy this https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0169T94KC/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

And then figure out what you use the most and buy better version of it, if needed.

u/SurfaceGrinder · 1 pointr/photography

Amazon has the MC-11 for the same price.

u/[deleted] · 1 pointr/cincinnati

Like this one?

Again, I'm just starting with this, so I don't really know what I should be looking for gear wise.

u/DanIsTheMan23 · 1 pointr/photography

Gear:

  • Canon EOS Rebel T3
  • EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens
  • This Lens kit from amazon

I would like to know how to take pictures of my home aquarium. I have tried messing around with different lenses and settings but to no success. I would love some suggestions on what settings and lenses to use to capture my fish!

Wanted to get an opinion on how good is Tamron EF mount 70-200mm f/2.8 with a Sigma MC-11 adapter. As I was looking to buy one. Thank you :)

58mm Altura Photo Professional Accessory Kit for Canon EOS Rebel DSLR – Bundle with Wide Angle & Fisheye Lens, Filters Kit (Macro Close-Up Set, UV, CPL, ND4, Color) Remote Control & More https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0057CPD1M/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_U-lTCb96X581H

Something like that. Basically it turns your regular lenses into a wide angle lense. Have you had any experience with those? Do you think something like that would be beneficial or just a waste of money?

u/finggivemeausername · 1 pointr/hardwareswap

It didnt come with anything other than the basic mount that comes with all GoPros, the battery, and charging cable. The Hero 6's are waterproof however, and if you wanted to carry it and shoot it with a selfie stick theres a bunch for sale online. A quick search on Amazon shows this huge variety pack for $20 which includes a selfie stick

u/hammad22 · 1 pointr/photography

I have just one more question, can you recommend me an ND filter for my Nikon D3300 with regular 18-55mm kit lens? I have no idea which mm length lens I should get because they come in various sizes or the differences between some ND filters. I saw this and this on Amazon. Like what's the difference between ND2 and ND4?

u/ficus16 · 1 pointr/photography

Amazon would probably work best, but being in NYC I'm sure I have plenty of option. Thank you for the advice! A bit off topic but what do you think of Lens kit or Polaroid Camera as gift options?

u/gravitypond · 1 pointr/bicycling

I think for many action cameras the equipment is somewhat interchangeable.
Since you seem to own other cameras with mounts, maybe just try out if the Yi cam fits any of those mounts and get one of those.
There are cheap bundles of various attachment stuff on amazon if you search for "action cam" or for a company name. (gopro, rollei, Yi,..)

(not sure if the wristband-ring-thing is suitable as handlebar mount?)

(this bundle contains a handlebar mount but does not explicitly mention the Yi Discovery.)

Backscatter looks awesome but expensive as fuck. I took these to the Great Barrier Reef last year. If you're using a Hero5 and up, I'm sure you can find an equivalent.

u/sideswiped · 1 pointr/photography

I wonder if you could have the glass cut to fit something like this Cokin square filter holder.

u/ghostbackwards · 1 pointr/photography

I just recently bought a nikon d5100 (my first dslr) It came with the the camera, of course and the stock 55 mm lense. I am wondering if I should buy this package on amazon what is this 55mm wide angle lense they are talking about?

u/tehpeanutgallery · 1 pointr/gopro

Hi all. I received a goPro Hero 3+ for Christmas along with this kit and I was wondering about the durability of the third party kit. Are they generally considered to be durable or should I invest in official GoPro accessories?

u/Sheepies68 · 1 pointr/backpacking

Maybe you could get a camera poncho?

u/Aelini · 1 pointr/photography

lol sorry I guess that was a bit vague. I guess my problem setting a price is that in looking I've seen more like add on things for a lens you would already have like this that are only like $10-$20 and then there are actual lenses that obviously cost a lot more and I really don't know the difference. That being said I am a college student and I really don't have $500+ to throw at a lens, so obviously the cheaper add on looks appealing to me at this point in my life, but again I don't know how well those would work. I've also been extraordinarily lucky in acquiring the lenses I have for substantially less than they normally go for, but I would find it reasonable to spend maybe a couple hundred on a new lens if those add ons are complete crap.

u/JoshWalkerMedia · 1 pointr/photography

Hey everyone! I am hopping someone can direct me towards some lens and lens accessories kits such as this one https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005197472/ref=psdc_7242007011_t1_B00WIWTS2E

But I have a 67mm lens on a nikon d7200 the lense i have is a AF-S Nikkor 18-140mm 1:3.5-5.6G.
My question is, are there lens kits like the one i linked but for a 67mm lens and do kits such as those even help or make a difference or are they a waist of money.
Currently I plan on doing alot of stock photography such as landscape images and such and I want to move up to portraits and other things but know I need a differnt lens.
