Well I guess he's set in his ways then...

Next Christmas or birthday you should get him a nice compact backpacking pillow. Not carrying that big thing for miles will allow him to enjoy the hike more (if he'll admit it or not).

Like this for $11: https://www.amazon.com/Inflatable-Vive-Comb-pillow-Best-Backpacking/dp/B0744J7976

Yes. I bought, and returned, a Cocoon ul inflateable pillow. I rolled off it and it was too slick. BUT, I went with a S2S knockoff on Amazon, for under $15. And I think it's fantastic.

I went with the Trekology (updated version) and it sleeps great! It's raised on the sides and has quite a bit of stretch to it. I feel like it's a little more comfortable flipped around (so it forms a "u" under my head, but that might just be personal preference). If you hate it, Amazon is pretty awesome about returns.

This Hikenture pillow, also on Amazon, appears similar construction, except it's about an inch taller and a bit wider. But I can't vouch for it, as I haven't tried it.

Both weigh in under 2.8 oz. That's a reasonable penalty for solid sleep. I tried multipurposing drysacks full of clothes, and it just doesn't work for me. I'm super happy with the Trekology purchase.

Not the pillow you have, but the Exped Ultralight Air Pillow has loops on the side to let you attach it to light cord wrapped around your pad.

Elk Neck has a public shooting range about 50 minutes from Hydes, $10/day. You have to bring your own target stand, I bought this one from Amazon and built it to the specs:

However, the rifle range will be closed for maintenance starting 17 July for four months.

I think these are the chinese knock offs of the Sea to Summit Aeros pillow: https://seatosummitusa.com/products/aeros-pillow-ultra-light

Which, I have found an even cheaper knock-off for only $9: https://www.amazon.com/Moon-Lence-Inflatable-Compressible-Backpacking/dp/B073PYQL9Y/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1535860566&sr=1-1-spons&keywords=moon+lence+pillow&psc=1

I've used the above for camping and trans-pacific flights. Works like a charm.

I loved using just a tarp on the PCT for 2017. I cowboy camped unless weather was rolling in or if it was super cold. I had no bivy and never felt the need for one, my 8’x10” tarp was plenty! I had a EE 20 degree revelation and was toasty, perfect quilt for the PCT. I’d consider picking up sea to summit bug net shelter only 3oz. I used that when the bugs came out as a stand alone. I’d cut the pad in half, then you can get the other half sent when the first one is flatted out, two for the price of one! Good luck on trail! http://www.seatosummitusa.com/product/?item=Nano+Mosquito+Pyramid+Net+Shelter&o1=0&o2=0&o3=131
Light pillow idea, just slide buff over it

I did this for years, never going back. I use this but there are many others out there.

I just now received another piece of gear in the mail you might be interested in:

$5 (+$5 shipping) NatureHike Aeros Pillow

It's a knock off of the Sea-to-Summit for about $25 less.

While I haven't camped with it yet, I inflated it, adjusted the pressure, and lay down on it for a bit. 10/10, would buy again.

EDIT - have camped with it several times now. The only downside I can see is the deflate valve is difficult to open compared to the StS Aero. Holds air all night, comfy, light, packs small.

I use this guy with a buff wrapped around it for extra delightful softness:

I was just going to get a cheap one off amazon for $4. 2.8oz, though.

Something like this when on sale/with a coupon: https://www.amazon.com/Inflatable-Pillow-VANWALK-Travel-Support/dp/B072JB7Z3M

i just can't do that personally. i use one of those ultralight inflatable pillows and i'll never go back to sleeping on a sack of clothes.

[This] (https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B06XG95WYG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_KTuCDbT5NNYPZ) is the best pillow I've ever tried. Bought two of them and have had no problems. One of the best valve designs I've ever seen on any inflatable product. I don't know why more companies don't use these valves. Plus they're super cheap.

Give this pillow a shot. I had the S2S Aeros (lightweight, but hated the feel), and the thermarest (somewhat comfy, but nearly 8oz). I haven't taken this pillow camping yet, but I did use it on my own bed and slept fairly well, and it's only 3.6 oz. I cut off the integrated stuff sack.

Hogue X5 wharncliffe, 3.5" size. They also have a spear point. Button lock flipper. I've been eyeing it for a while finally pulled the trigger.

Came here to suggest this, but I haven't actually used mine yet.

I also have a Klymit Pillow X: https://www.amazon.com/Klymit-Pillow-Inflatable-Camp-Travel/dp/B01FNLRAJY

hey man welcome to bushcrafting so far you have a pretty decent list but i'd like to give you suggestions from what I learned throughout the years.

knife- good choice for chopping and batoning but too much blade to use whittling and making small cuts. generally you want to use either large blade/small blade or axe/ small blade combos.

backpack- 65L is very overkill unless your doing 5 day+ with clothing for every day. I would suggest something in the range of 45L max.

compass- do you know the area your going to or do you really know how to use it? I know every person says to just have one just in case but if they already know their terrain or dont even know how to use the dang thing its just wasting space.

ferro rod- generally stay away from things like multi use gear. also just from my experience you want a long rod (5"+) for more surface area to generate more sparks for an easier chance to catch fire.

pillow- I would not use hammock pillows for on ground sleeping. they're extremely small and have almost no support on the count of your body is in a curling position in a hammock. I would suggest something like an inflatable pillow for you to adjust for your support and then covering it with something like a shemagh or t-shirt.

first aid- your going to get more cuts, scrapes and burns so I would buy extra of that stuff, but I would also add some quick clot just for the off chance of having a serious injury out in the field. and also some moleskin for your feet and pain relievers. and dont forget sunscreen.

now for some additions for your gear loadout.

saw and stay away from those stupid hand chainsaws

cooking vessal

cowhide gloves

Again; welcome and I hope you enjoy yourself and grow with your errors out in the field.

Besides an improvement in speech did you notice an improvement in running or anything?

Do you think this one would be good?

http://smile.amazon.com/Super-thick-Flocking-Fabric-Inflatable-Portable/dp/B00Z5FJB14/ref=sr_1_1

What are those percentages?

Thanks!
