I AM IN YOUR SITUATION! Just got on this board three days ago. Spent $200 over the past three days and I've drastically improved my wardrobe.

1. Go through the right hand guides of knowing what fits you and what not. If you're an athletic type, go to /r/malefashionadvice there is a post on athletic builds if you fit that description. The most important thing is understanding what fits. I bought a medium out of shame of rather not buying a small convincing myself that the somewhat baggy look was better. I went back to smalls and I realized how much better I looked.

2. Shoes! Get yourself a pair of from what a newbie understands as "classy" shoes. You're in college so you're surrounded by meat heads, swag vags, and sweatpants wearing ants, and the occassional look at me I wear crazy shit. Most of the time, they're wearing Nikes, Addidas, Underarmor, and other shit that you probably have. You'll get the occassional mocassin and boots, but what'll make you really stand out in terms of fashion is your shoes. This is good. MFA is (in my opinion off a brief 3 day lurking): classy, mature, timeless, and just overall attractive male attire.

So! The investment I made were Brown Suede Clarks for $70 @ Journeys in NYC Best investment so far. I've never owned anything so nice yet casual as these shoes. They're extremely comfortable.

For $21 you can get Seude Oxfords at JC Penny. Another cheap and truly great shoe. Just looks plain good with anything. I got mine for $15 because I was very patient and nice to the saleswoman (mid 50s); she gave me a wink and said I'll take some off for ya.

3. Pants I would go again with the suggestion of jeans. 511 - Skinny, 514 - Slim Straight. These are Levi's obviously. I've owned Arizona, Lee, and Wrangler; Levi's are just unbeatable. For $40 and sometimes $30 you can get a pair. I would get one pair of Levi's. Make sure it's a pair you definitely would love.

One pair of Khakis. If you're in New York City, get over to Uniqlo and get yourself a pair of $30 really good quality chinos (khakis). They can be tailored in the store so don't be afraid if you see 33x36 pants or 30x34 pants. They can be cut for free. Otherwise stop by Amazon to get D1 Slims or Alphas.

GAP has a sale going on for 40% off or 30% without a coupon. They have a limited selection of pretty good quality khakis that are fitting and are decent when it comes to price ($40-$50).

4. Tops Old Navy. It was up there that their premium t-shirts are on sale for Buy One Get One Free. They're pretty good quality for $6 bucks a pop ($12 for one, so you get 2 for essentailly $6). I grabbed some myself. Theres a coupon for 10% online somewhere. I used it. However, Old Navy fits may not be so kind on you as they are with me. As their sizes scale, it scales wider; it does not scale with benevolence longer.

Graphic Tees are alright in college. Again plain simple colors/patterns will distinguish you from the highschool attire that even these 2nd semester freshies will be wearing.

For your budget, I would take your time shopping the clearance racks of most department stores. I went to JCPenny the other day and found a slim fitting GREAT purple J. Ferrar shirt for $7. For the way it fits and the decent quality, this button down shirt was an absolute steal. I also bought 2 $12 dollar button downs from Macys that happened to fit me perfectly. Again it's on where you're looking.

Polos Polos are easy to come by. Old Navy has em as do most stores. Whether you like them with a logo or plain, even Ralph Lauren Polos can be spotted on the cheap. Do you barging.

5. Outerwear Cardingans are on clearance in the Old Navy rack for $6-12. I picked up one. I picked up a great fitting hoodie from there as well for $7. Fits me perfect and shows off my muscles /flex.

If you've heard of a store called Against All Odds, they have a good selection of outwear (more swagster area and ghetto-fab), but it's better especially for the athletic fit. They have some sales and the quality isn't atrocious. You can check that out.

Thrifting Theres a thread on the side; hopefully you don't need a link.

Lets Review

  • Take your time, browse accordingly. There is no need to rush.
  • Look everywhere and always check the clearance.
  • Make sure the clothes fit, if you like the style but are a little iffy on the fit do not buy it unless you think it'll shrink on to you.

What I did in the past 3 days:

  • $80 Clarks
  • $22 Bass @ J C Penny's + J. Ferrar Slim Shirt
  • $12 2 Old Navy Premium V-Neck Shirts
  • $8 Cardingan at Old Navy
  • $7 Hoodie at Old Navy
  • $40 Levi 514 Jeans
  • $30 Chinos @ Uniqlo (add 5-10 dollars for Dockers)

    Total: $193

Hopefully that'll set you up. If you're not iffy on spending that much on Clarks, then there is more in your budget for other things like pants or underwear.

Anyways, go here if you want $100 starter kits.

Good Luck and let me know of your great finds.

Amazon Essentials. I haven't worn them much yet, so can't comment on durability. But they fit great and come in a decent range of colors.

JCPenney also sells Dockers D1's for $37 now with their new pricing scheme, although their colors are somewhat limited. Also, Amazon has them for around $35-40 with all the same colors available as Khol's.

Thanks! They're actually just a cheap pair from Amazon. [These; to be specific.] (https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B007PR8R10/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) I just tapered the legs of them with a sowing machine!

Renn faire/Viking style banded ankle pants is what you're looking for! However, I'm only finding that style branded "for men". Though I couldn't imagine a difference for women.

Honestly? You don't have enough time to make it yourself unless you've already made a few garments of complexity in the past. You will need to order online. Do you - or, since you mention school- your parents have Amazon prime? This shirt with these trousers won't look ridiculous. It's not what would have been worn but it won't stand out terribly much either.

So funny. I made my list last night. My French Wardrobe plans for Fall/Winter 2013:

Top 5

  1. Olive Chinos - $40 Amazon - Dockers modern

  2. Alden Indys - $500 shoemart.com

  3. Chambray shirt - not sure yet. J.Crew has tab on shirt. could get tailored... open to suggestions.

  4. Ecru sweater = Done $42 from J.Crew very happy

  5. Wool jacket = two options $295-$325 schott and $450 j.press

My top five I wanted to have one of each category, shirt, shoes, pants, sweater, and jacket.

    Secondary items:

    Stowa watch - $1200

    Grey melange/raglan/heather/marbled sweatshirt - j.crew, american giant

    Fair Isle sweater

    Navy toggle sweater

    Auburn pants

Navy suede camp mocs - osbm

    pointer duck coat? still considering...
u/Willravel · 2 pointsr/malefashionadvice

Interesting. Okay, I can work with that.

Chinos: $35.99

Dress shirt: $44

Blazer: $59-$149

Shoes are going to be damned tough. I'm not sure there's such a thing as a nice, inexpensive dress shoe, unless you're into second-hand like some folks on this subreddit. Asos is mentioned in the shoe FAQ, but even those might stretch your budget. Check your local JC Penny for Stafford Ashton wingtips on sale, maybe.

Amazon has what you need but you can find a lot of different ones searching for 'harem pants' or 'Indian pants' on google.

Are these worth the price? I saw on camelcamelcamel that it was under $20 a few days ago, but I missed it :(

Today I was walking down the street in my SWAG PANTS that I had recently purchased... I was feeling better than ever. THE BITCHES BOWED BEFORE MY AWESOME PANTS AND OLDER MEN CRIED AS THEY WERE BLINDED BY PURE AWESOMENESS.... sometimes you just need to spend 20 bucks on swag pants.

u/animalistik · 2 pointsr/malefashionadvice

I just got my first real job and the dress code is business casual. I recently bought D1 dockers in black and navy http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002AQ23G6/ref=cm_sw_su_dp and some Alfani button-up shirts.

What kind of shoes should I wear with the chinos? I was thinking of Florsheim shoes, but my parents think they're too dressy for chinos. Any recommendations? Links would be helpful.

u/c_rbon · 2 pointsr/streetwear

i have these and when i cuff them they look just like that

u/Unabomber007 · 2 pointsr/malefashionadvice

Where does the fault lie?

Did you drop your pants on the counter, pick up your ticket and deuce out? You = fault.

Did you drop your pants on the counter, say, "Look motherfucker...these are here for dry cleaning" and deuce out? Cleaners = fault.

Do know you will NOT be getting 5 x $125 back from the cleaners....you are lucky to clear $100 on this deal. What I'd do is invest in some pant stretchers...get them janks wet... install stretchers and let them dry to fix them. https://www.amazon.com/Pant-Stretcher-Heavy-Instant-Stretch/dp/B00AZNK1RO/ref=pd_bxgy_201_img_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=Z6BTXD76W1GGH5PA86Y8

I have the same problem and here is what I have found:

  • Jeans - Levi's 513 fit much better than 511 at my normal size.
  • Docker's Alpha - I only have one pair, but it fits great at my normal size Slim Lightweight Twill
  • Banana Republic Aiden - I bought a pair at my normal size and it fits pretty tight. If I bought another pair, I would probably size up.
  • Gap Lived In Slim - I need to size up (31 vs. 30).
  • Express Jeans - I stick to a cold rinse Rocco slim straight that has a stretch fabric in it. It fits tight on the first wear after a wash, but because there is a stretch fabric isn't uncomfortable. Additionally, after about 2 full days of wear it stretches to the point where they fit pretty well. They don't taper as much as I'd like below the knee, but it's not terrible.

I'm still early on in finding that perfect pair without tailoring, but I hope this helps.

Are they the khaki? Are they cuffed or have they got elastic in the bottom? Attached is the link I found for what I think is them. https://www.amazon.com/Amazon-Essentials-Slim-Fit-Casual-Stretch/dp/B07BJL5TRT?th=1&psc=1

just go to sears or kohls or something and find a pair of those ~stretch~ dress pants that have some spandex in them.

personally i prefer khakis to dress pants (if your work allows them.) or if you really wanna emphasize the "casual" in business casual you can get a pair of these: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00OTRQJZK/ref=twister_B00OTRHNUA . they're VERY comfy

u/bustinya · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

I'm the same. In width I'm kind of 31.5. I think the sizes are shown differently in e-bay, but I got them from Amazon here

I got one pair XL and another XXL. The XL is, if you could call it so, a 'slim' fit. It'd be perfect if it was a couple inches longer. The XXL is a lot more baggier and if you have things in your pockets with relative weight like your phone, wallet and keys then you might be having to pull them up at times. Nevertheless, they have a drawstring so you could just tie that up and I think it would do the job. I've never had to do that.

As for the purpose, well whenever I use them it's for everyday use. I've never tried them for jogging or any other physical activity but I have an itching feeling that they wouldn't get the job done so easily. I think the XL would be a bit tight and would end up rolling up my legs (which happens sometimes due to not being that long) and the XXL would sag too much.

For the price, I'm amazed they haven't ripped every time I finish using them. They're also pretty warm. The fit is nice due to the narrow leg opening. Some people are suggesting a size L for a waist 32 but honestly I don't think the waist is the problem, but the length. I'm 1.84 meters long (6 feet and a half inch) and I feel more comfortable with the XXL but I think the XL look better. I'm not that into skinny/slim fits but the XL would definitely be perfect if they were a bit longer (at least for me). The XXL fit considerably baggier now that I tried them back on.

Conclusion: XL might be your choice of size depending on your height. May be a bit short if you're even taller than me. Your decision also depends on if you're gonna use them for your couch days or to go out too (and exercise)

I hope this helps you make a decision! Some more reviews from amazon/ebay might help.

I personally Iike these

I found the Volcom Frickin Modern chinos last summer and haven’t looked back since. They’re pretty affordable ($55) for pants that have lasted me a year of skating and wearing at least once a week. Also super soft and a nice fit that’s not skinny, but not baggy. It’s also hard for me to fit pants that fit me right because i’m a waist size 28, but these aren’t crazy long or too big. (i cuff my pants tho.) Volcom Chinos

White, stone, or khaki.

Some blues might also work well, like this or this.

A hat stretcher with an extender is sometimes used for this. See here for an example.

Haha okay I'll check for the name on US amazon then, cheers.

Edit: found em, but 30 and 19 shipping :(

Hello, I'm a fellow tenth grader who is very good with fashion, and I would love to help you!

You haven't really stated much of what you're interested in, so I'm just going to give you some basic links to help with a more preppy, mature style.

First and foremost, though, is that mop on your head. I had it, you have it, every guy has had it. It's time to let it go and cut it off. You'll thank me later.

For your tops, I recommend dropping the whole T-shirt/sweater everyday, and trying to stay away from graphic tees completely. I find that if you wear a simple pattern/solid colour shirt, you'll look a lot more clean and grown up. Not much else to be said, just see what you like, but keep it simple.

For jeans, dark denim is in style right now. Since you're a teenager like me, you'll probably want a slim fitting jean. Pac-Sun, H&M, Dockers, and Levi's have some of the best fits that you'll find for a reasonable price. If you want chinos (AKA Khakis), I recommend Dockers brand.

For shoes, since I almost exclusively wear Vans, my knowledge is limited. A general rule of thumb is to keep the sole of the shoe more on the thin side, make sure the tip of the shoe is more tapered/to a point, and the tongue of it isn't too big. Some examples are here, here, and here.

Here are some links of some of the things I mentioned, as they are a good point of reference. Another great place to look are all the sidebar links, namely the basic wardrobe.

Tops:

Old Navy Tees

Old Navy Button-Ups

H&M Tees

Forever 21 (Big selection of tops)

Bottoms:

Dockers Chinos (AKA Khakis)

Levi's 511 Denim Jeans

Pac-Sun Slim Jeans

Shoes:

Vans

Sperry's Topsiders

If you have any more questions, feel free to ask via PM or here in the comments.

Cheers!
