The biggest WTF for me concerning the Ursa is the use of those ridiculously expensive CFast cards. With that 17 pound behemoth of a camera, they couldn't figure out a way to squeeze in an SSD slot?

This 250 GB SSD's dimensions are:

> Product Dimensions: 3.9 x 0.3 x 2.8 inches ; 1.9 ounces

That's roughly the size and weight of a deck of playing cards. That's nothing. It's $129.

The price for a 256 GB Cfast card? $1,414.55. Four of those memory cards is as expensive as the damn camera!

Yes, you can make a [£2,595 URSA Mini 4K EF] (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B017A3PRBG/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1634&creative=19450&creativeASIN=B017A3PRBG&linkCode=as2&tag=hybrcamerevo-21) [Referral Link] work for corporate or run and gun - and get image quality no standard camcorder can match (as seen [here] (https://vimeo.com/149554465) and [here] (https://vimeo.com/152219074)), but by the time you buy a [£194.41 CFAST 2.0 card] (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00LL4QUTE/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1634&creative=19450&creativeASIN=B00LL4QUTE&linkCode=as2&tag=hybrcamerevo-21), a [£196.94 SDI viewfinder] (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0177CB50W/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1634&creative=19450&creativeASIN=B0177CB50W&linkCode=as2&tag=hybrcamerevo-21), a [£348.45 shoulder mount] (http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/710-53481-19255-0/1?icep_ff3=2&pub=5575034783&toolid=10001&campid=5337235943&customid=&icep_item=391324098531&ipn=psmain&icep_vectorid=229508&kwid=902099&mtid=824&kw=lg) and a [£595.53 fast lens] (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00DBL0NLQ/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1634&creative=19450&creativeASIN=B00DBL0NLQ&linkCode=as2&tag=hybrcamerevo-21) [Referral Links], you will be well over your £3,000 limit.

If you want a large sensor, run and gun 4K camcorder in your price range, you might want to consider the [£2,917.17 JVC GY-LS300] (http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/710-53481-19255-0/1?icep_ff3=2&pub=5575034783&toolid=10001&campid=5337235943&customid=&icep_item=301510090765&ipn=psmain&icep_vectorid=229508&kwid=902099&mtid=824&kw=lg) [Referral Link].

Like a conventional camcorder (such as the EX3), the LS300 has built-in NDs, XLRs, dual card slots, a top handle and camcorder ergonomics - but unlike camcorders such as the EX3, it has a Hollywood-sized sensor and 4096x2160p true 4K image resolution - plus it can use its power zoom rocker and variable scan sensor mapping for lossless 1080p digital zoom with prime lenses (as seen [here] (https://youtu.be/0Eq4_hPzQPc)).

It also records to 3840x2160 Ultra High Definition (UHD), 2048x1080 DCI 2K and 1920x1080p HD (up to 60fps).

In addition, it has a flat LOG profile, which increases its dynamic range.

This is an 8-bit camera, but it has 4:2:2 color subsampling and will stand up to grading pretty well.

Here's a UHD file shot with cine gamma (before the J LOG release):

You should remove the SD card if you can. If you have both a CF and SD card installed, the camera will slow down the CF to match the SD speed. I ended up ditching the SD card on my 7D Mark II and use CF only.

Edit: The CF I use: https://www.amazon.com/Lexar-Professional-1066x-CompactFlash-LCF32GCRBNA10662/dp/B00IQCRTQ2/

I have a very similar setup, so here's my 2 pence.

You might want to get a loupe (LCDVF) for the 5d3 so you can see the screen in daylight.

I own both of those lenses. That's a good combo for starting out.

Is the caliber something you can use as a key light? Looks like a very small source to me and may not stand up to being diffused very well.. Take a look at the PixaPro Litebank 455 (my choice of cheap florescent atm).

Sound setup looks good. XLR cables seem too cheap though? Don't let a crappy cable let you down, get Neutrik ends and a quality cable. Also you've got a NTG4+ but no way of booming it? I use one of these - really effective for overhead booming

Before you buy those CF cards - you're buying a (relatively) old camera. Have you looked into shooting Magic Lantern Raw on the 5d3? Huge step up in image quality but you need fast CF cards. I recommend these - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Komputerbay-128GB-Professional-Compact-Extreme/dp/B00J9OS7LW/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1450439191&sr=8-3-fkmr0&keywords=128bg+komputerbay

Are you sure you need a backdrop kit? I've never needed to use one except for some stills photography..

I cannot speak to the D7100, but I have noticed preview lag issues when shooting on slower cards on a D200, D300, D700 and D800. I also had issues with the buffer, which means I could only shoot (for example) 12 frames at 8 fps on a D300 before the buffer filled up. I was shooting on Transcend cards at the time. Switching to faster cards (Sandisk Extreme) solve the problem with preview lag, bringing an up to 6-second delay down to near-instant. It also bumped my maximum shots before buffering from 12 to 14, and the clearing of the buffer was a half-second faster.

If you can justify it, switch to pro cards. I recommend Lexar Professional 1066X compactflash cards, though Sandisk Extreme cards are pretty good as well. Stay away from cheap brands like Transcend - they're the only card I've ever had fail, and this happened with multiple cards. If you're stuck with SD (which I've found to be much slower than compactflash), still get pro cards. I believe Lexar makes some 600X SD for a decent price.

I have like 6 of these and only 1 has failed (due to my partner's error of pulling it out of the cam while it recording) sigh

I have it stop recording if dropped frames start occurring.
I can record continuous 1920x1080 23.976fps with these. About 10 secs at 48fps.
I usually shoot in 1920x818 23.976 to save a file size and I can actually pretty much record continuous at 48fps in that aspect ratio.

  1. Repairing it might even be something you could do yourself, if you wanted to try it. Here's a video guide on how to take it apart, and here's a text-and-picture based one. The only problem I foresee is the battery seems to be soldered on, and you'd probably definitely want to change that; but once it's open anyone with the ability to solder could that for you, and it's only taken apart with screws.

  2. It's probably the screen that's messed up, if you can see the contents but with no backlight. I literally just got an iPod (Classic) put back together today that a screen I ordered had no backlight working, and I had to order another one which worked fine.

  3. Probably. Hard drives and batteries are the most common failures.

  4. iTunes wouldn't recognize it, if the hard drive has failed.

  5. I have no idea what the three beeps are, but they're definitely a POST code failure response, to tell you something is wrong.

  6. You can replace the hard drive with a CF, but those are expensive for even the most modest storage sizes. It'd be much cheaper and more effective to get a SD to CF adapter card and an SD card which would run you $40 USD for 128GBs, where it'd be $40 USD to just get 64GBs via CF, and $70 to get the equivalent 128GBs via CF.

$80 flash that supports HSS

$110 Canon 50mm f/1.8

$250-$300 Canon 50D That link might not work I just searched Amazon for used 50D's. Again Fredmiranda.com and even a reputable ebay seller is a good option for used stuff. Be sure to pay the paypal fee's for protection and look for sellers with a 99% rating after a decent amount of sales.

The 50D is definitely long in the tooth but it has a professional build and controls. Here's a review article. It's 15mp which is plenty and has a pretty good autofocus system 9 cross type autofocus points iso: 100-3200 expanded to 6,400 and 12,800 with H1 and H2 not the best performance but for $250 you wont beat it. The multi direction controller set to direct AF point selection is imho necessary for PJ stuff. I'm always changing my focus points and I won't own a camera without the direct selector. That and the all magnesium body is what makes it a "professional" camera in my eyes.

You also need a CF card and reader. ~ $30

Totals $520

These are being used heavily these days, besides Transcend.
