Personally, the only who holds that don't make my hands cramp after a while are the Sally Bates ones. They have a small pinky area and that is where my issues seem to start.

They sell them at Joann's and Amazon

I hope you don't mind my chiming in.

There's an Afghan Crochet Hook, sometimes called an Afghan Crochet Needle Hook, and sometimes called a Tunisian Crochet Needle. They are from 10 to 14 inches long. In my experience, longer is better. They come in single and double ended. I like double ended because I feel they are more versatile, however the stop on the end of one hook ends can help keep the project in place, but everyone has their own preferences.

They come in bamboo and aluminum, I prefer aluminum. Every major brand makes them, and it''s usually cheaper to buy them in a set.

Here's an awesome set at a very affordable price.

I've had these in my wishlist for the LONGEST TIME and I almost caved and bought them yesterday. I love watching movies in the dark and crocheting at the same time- these fix my first work problem dilemma!

In case it helps you, here are a couple sets that I found really cheap on Amazon. Maybe not what you need, but if it helps!

A really basic set

A more ergonomic set

Here is a list of supplies that are very helpful to have:

  • Row counter

  • folding pocket scissors

  • darning needles of various sizes (they come in metal and plastic- I like to have some of both) If she uses thick yarn, look for ones with big enough eyes.

  • stitch markers

  • measuring tape (I like the little retractable kind)

  • gauge ruler

  • Finger Sleeves (great for reducing "yarn finger")

You can go on etsy and get fancier stitch markers, or just stick with the simple plastic ones. Whichever hooks and supplies you end up getting, try to get a carrying case to go with them. It doesn't have to be specific for crochet. It can be a pencil case or little zip up makeup pouches. They sometimes sell the makeup/travel pouches in sets of 2 or 3 sizes in the drug store or card store. Having a few in different sizes is best- one for the little things like stitch markers, needles, etc, and one for the medium sized things like rulers, measuring tape and scissors, and one for all the hooks. They make special hook cases, and if you're buying a set and they sell one that coordinates, you should consider getting it. They also make crochet supply cases, like this one, which hold everything all together.

    Merry Christmas!

Looks like a Damero Crochet Hook Case.
They are good for ergonomic hooks that a similarly shaped to Clover Amour hooks but don't hold hooks well whose handle's are the same diameter as the shaft of the hook.

I started with this hook set and loved it, I still use them often!

Not OP but this is the set without any extras at a bargain $10. This is the set with other bits and pieces $14 so worth it if you need any of the other bits.

If you're UK, this is the bare set for a paltry 拢3.09 - how unusual to find something cheaper in the UK than in the USA!

I have this set from WooCraft that I love...

I'm fairly new still, but the aluminum hooks were killing my hands. I think these are a great compromise. They are not perfect--some have a rough spot near the base of the hook/top of the silicone. Super comfortable though and I can hook for hours and hours without pain!!

I hold mine like a pen. However, as you said, after a short while hooking, my hand would feel like a claw! I bought a set of soft handled hooks and was flying afterwards!

Here's a complete set of them that comes with a cute case.

There's also a similar set of addi swing ones.

Though if you're interested in addi knock-offs i have this set. And you can get them on prime in a less pretty brown color right here.

I also just found this set of soft touch knockoffs that I'd really like to give a shot.

It鈥檚 a great set!! When you need bigger sizes, Amazon has 6.5, 7, and 8 for not too expensive. Actually I believe one of them was $4. I also got a hook holder that fits them if you alternate which side is up.

A set of hooks like these http://www.amazon.com/Ergonomic-Aluminum-Crocheting-Beginners-Friendly/dp/B00V4CNL90 will run you about $20. Then you can take the rest of the money and buy yarn for her! I'd be ecstatic to get a gift like that! I think she would, too!

I NEED these light up crochet hooks

Don't know how the link works but they're the 2nd thing on my wishlist.

Step 1 - order a fine Crochet hook off of Amazon. 1 mm should be fine (Crochet Hooks Needles Knitting,Awakingdemi 8pcs Mixed Lace Knitting Needles Metal Hook Crochet Template Kit https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0752NVMCP/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_qASDDb388K0JX)

Step 2 - use a lighter to heat the the tip of the Needle till it's red.

Step 3 - insert the needle into the stem. Careful not to run in through your space bar.

Step 4 - wait 10 seconds for the plastic to cool down.

Step 5 - Gently pull it out. GENTLY! Or you'll break the needle in the plastic.

For easier pull - lubricate with oil before pulling.

Best advice for hooks btw

Go on amazon and look at crochet kits. I just got this one in KeNeer 35Pack Crochet Hooks... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075KJV3WV?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf and im loving it honestly. The hooks dont snag and my hands dont hurt if i switch to a small hook for a project. To me this is cheaper than going to the craft store and buying their hooks individually. Plus you got stitch markers and tapestry needle to sew in your ends. And now you have all the most popular needle sizes for whatever project you want to start with.

Start a practice swatch. Undo. Redo. Undo. Redo. Best thing about this is you dont waste material when mastering the craft. You can unwind and re wind all you want.
