I hate flossing so much I switched to flossers vs. actual dental floss.

I can absentmindedly floss using only one hand whilst doing another activity. Usually this means I get a thorough flossing job done, especially if the primary activity is browsing reddit...

To kick things off, here's a couple of things I'm doing.

  • Giving up on single use plastics and non-recyclable material when I can. I didn't realize that bags of chips and candy bar wrappers can't be recycled, and go to the landfill. So I'm axing those out of my life, but will indulge for occasions such as parties and what not. I bought a bunch of potatoes that I'll slice up and throw into the oven to replace chips.

  • Getting some eco-friendly floss picks because turns out floss/floss picks go to the landfill.

  • Looking to begin my entry into hydroponics by trying out the kratky method to grow some lettuce.

  • Limiting my beef consumption to only a few times a week. I've already begun to eat more vegetarian meals and cook them as well. I usually am only getting beef in the morning in a breakfast burrito.

  • Considering cutting out coffee :( I started to think about it and turns out that there's only two areas in the US where coffee is grown and that's in Hawaii and California. So unless that coffee is from California, a lot of emissions are given off during transport.

  • Related to this, looking to not buy food that's shipped from overseas. I was going to buy some bok choy and noticed that it was from Shanghai of all places. Glad to see my local QFC is labeling if the produce comes from overseas.

I wonder if the axis of rotation for the spool would work better perpendicular to the handle, so that the spool unwinds in the direction of the head.

Something like this.

This stuff turned me into a flosser. 10/10 recommend to keep them chompers fresh.

Check your tongue for bacterial buildup, such as a white film. If you have that then you must scrape it off with a tongue scraper. Your tongue should be solid pink with no white or yellow spots. The tongue is usually the main culprit of bad breath.

Meat can also get stuck between teeth and begin to decay and give off a rotten, acidic smell. Buy floss picks and floss your teeth in the morning and night, along with brushing your teeth and brushing gently, but thoroughly, over your gums. Use coconut oil instead of commercial toothpaste.

Look into oil pulling, which is swishing with coconut oil for about 10 to 20 minutes. It pulls out bacteria since they stick to the fat in the oil. Then you spit it out into the garbage. The oil reaches many spots you cannot reach with flossing and brushing alone. Make sure to use virgin coconut oil or cold pressed coconut oil. Never used refined coconut oil.

Get a mouth guard. If you can't afford to have one professionally made, this on is only $20 and works pretty well.

I didn't know about them either until today.

There's silk floss that usually comes in a refillable glass dispenser or if you're vegan they make a bamboo charcoal version and a (supposedly) biodegradable one made of corn.

Then a lower waste option is this German brand Doctors Floss that has a refillable metal dispenser or the Eco-Dent cardboard dispenser. Their floss is still nylon unfortunately which is why it's cheaper and comes with a lot more floss than the options above.

Also, get these flossers (Plackers) .. it's flossing made easy:

I use this one It's compostable, comes in a glass container and they sell refills. It's not zero waste because of the Amazon packaging and the refills come in a small plastic baggie. I've been using it for a year now and I'm happy with it.

I actually just use a manual ortho brush currently. I've tried a Sonicare electric toothbrush and an Oral-B cheapo electric toothbrush before I got braces, but I didn't really like either. I just learned how to brush better with a manual brush by watching a whole bunch of YouTube videos about different brushing techniques.

I don't think a regular toothbrush (manual or electric) can really get into all the bracket spaces, but if you go back through and brush in between and on the top and bottom of all your brackets with an interdental brush, your brackets should stay pretty clean. There are a lot of different interdental brushes out there, but my ortho hands out these: https://www.amazon.com/Anself-Dental-Inter-dental-Flosser-Toothpick/dp/B074BPBHFT?ref_=ast_bbp_dp . The good thing about these is there is no cap to lose and you get a lot of them so you can change them out frequently. I've been changing them out once a week.

Using floss once a day is great. If you want to do both, that's great as well. Glad you're so concerned, most young people aren't. Remember, the brackets on your teeth will collect plaque around them. if not cleaned properly, when they take the braces off, a weakened area in the form of the brackets outline will be left on your teeth. So I would also recommend proxy brushes to basically clean around the brackets. Scrub the plaque off. Superfloss by Oral B is also a great product for braces. Here are Amazon links

Reach cinnamon floss I'm not sure what the taxes are in your state but this is 1.40$!

u/connonym · 1 pointr/Dentistry

Is it okay to floss with things like Eez-Thru flossers ? I find them much more convenient than regular floss but I've heard they don't floss well enough.
