Yes it's worth it.

Also, buy a cover for it LIKE THIS (provided as an example only).

You can still "open" your book and read it.

The battery life is better than an iPad.

The fonts are crisper.

It fits in my back pocket.

Tried a lot of cases, including Pad & Quill, official Amazon black leather cover, Omoton, etc.

IMO the official cover felt very solid and was heavier than the Omoton but still had some flex to the top cover (pressure from a small, hard object could press the cover against the screen). I figured it doesn't offer much over the 3rd party alternative so I returned it. I gave the Omoton case to my brother because I wanted a vertical folding case and found this Moko cover with a stand. Although it adds considerable bulk, I prefer to just rest the stand on my belly or the table when I'm reading. Top cover has no flex whatsoever and I felt comfortable taking it on my recent trip abroad with my carry-on. I also like the added bonus of not having to pry the kindle from the cover as you often have to do with cases like the Amazon or Omoton covers (it fits in with a little latch system that works pretty well).

Highly personal thoughts on the matter ahead, having bought and returned the official Amazon case.

I find the official Amazon case to be too smooth. I want something with a bit of grip so that I don't feel like I'll be dropping it when the cover is closed. That said, with the cover flipped back and the tweed-like material under your fingers, the front cover and back of the case come into contact with each other and slip around a bit because the material is smooth and slippery.

I also wonder how much protection the official case provides against shocks. It's got that hard plastic shell, but I have no idea how that would aid/hurt its ability to protect the Kindle. I'd prefer a case with moderately dense foam that can cushion a fall.

I've got a dual-color Fintie Folio case winging its way to me right now, so I'll let you know how it fares. It and its siblings have gotten high praise all around: 1135 reviews, 4.6 stars on Amazon. It's also the top recommended case by The Wirecutter. The regular model is just 1.6 ounces, and the dual-color model I ordered looks like it'll only be a bit heavier.

Keep in mind that the Kindle is 7.3 ounces, and the official case is 5.6 ounces. Individually, both feel light. Put them together, and the combo becomes somewhat unwieldly. I understand that the two together at 12.9 ounces is still lighter than most books, but I think what's more relevant is that the density of the Kindle+Official case combo is quite high. If you made the Kindle+Official case combo occupy the volume of a paper book, the Kindle combo would probably weigh 2-3 times as much, so about 26-39 ounces. That's a cumbersome weight to be wielding with your wrists for a long time.

So, you end up with a dense little package, that can be a bit slippery, and that offers no cushioning. Perhaps the stiff plastic molding acts as a shock cage or something that amplifies the Kindle's inherent structural integrity. I don't know.

If we're talking aesthetics, my personal take on the official case is that the interior tweed is pleasant and classy, and the plastic molding that hugs the Kindle keeps the borders simple and clean. However, the exterior of the case has been treated to be a bit hard and slippery, which I find to be a minus. It would have looked and felt better being a softer leather. Above all, however, I find the curved back of the official case to be a detraction from its aesthetics. The rest of the case keeps in line with a mostly stolid, square theme, and then you have this plastic molding that adds odd curves and is a bit smaller than the front cover so that the unit appears to slopes inwards when you view it in profile. It's got a bit of an inverted trapezoid thing going on. That's probably my biggest gripe. Why couldn't the back be the same size as the front?

Anyhow, I'm going on for quite a long time. Basically, I wanted to 1.) keep weight as low as possible, 2.) buy something with more grip, 3.) and buy something with cushioning.

That's a lengthy reasoning for a $16 product, but there you have it. The official case does make a very satisfying "fwup" when you close the cover. Its magnet will never fail you. Its sides are fully protected by the plastic molding. But it's also way expensive, heavy, slippery on its leather surfaces, and kind of unaesthetic ALTHOUGH IT HAS THE LOOK AND FEEL OF QUALITY. I just wanted some more functionality from the case, and a better aesthetic.

I just bought a kindle touch and regret it a tiny bit. It does its job fine, but honestly I prefer my girlfriends regular kindle. My touch is a little too sensitive and I find I accidentally trigger page turns if I'm not holding it perfectly.

I bought my mom a (non touch) Kindle for her birthday this year with [this case] (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B005KDY756/thicatliwi-20) and she absolutely loved it.

Good luck!

u/Boisterous_Coconuts · 4 pointsr/books

You could just buy a case that is water proof. That's what I did anyway.

u/pa-guy · 4 pointsr/kindle

Get a case. One of my cases opens up and has a strap for your hand to make it easy to one-hand the kindle. The other case will auto turn on/off the kindle as the case is opened. I kind of wish I had a hybrid, but either one of them is better than no case at all.

Other than that, I've been a happy Paperwhite user for some time and don't really use any other accessories, other than the power charger.

u/SodTiwaz · 4 pointsr/kindle

I've been using THIS ONE for 2 years now without any issues. I've dropped my kindle a few times but only on carpet so I'm not sure how much protection it gives if dropped against a hard surface. I have an older version of the case so these may be off a bit but here's what my scale says:

>6th Gen Paperwhite weight: ~208 g

>Moko weight: ~112 g

>Combined weight 318-320 g or 11.2 Oz

u/dnadosanddonts · 3 pointsr/kindle

I've always favored an easel-style case, allowing me to read while having the case on a stable, horizontal surface. Closing the lid puts my Paperwhite to sleep; opening and swiping the screen brings it back to life.

Admittedly vertical flip covers like this aren't nearly as popular or numerous as other designs. But then, who can account for taste?

Paperwhite + a highly-rated off-brand case. This one for example. The official Amazon cases are also good - heavier, which is both a pro & a con, but definitely not worth the huge price premium.

I've had Kindles since 2010, and imo the only serious improvement has been the light added on the Paperwhite 1.

You do want a case though - the screens are a bit fragile.

This, this, and this.

I use this combination and I am literally never without something to do. It is a totally self-sufficient, all-inclusive, 100% portable entertainment package. Fill the entire 4gb hard drive with literally any assortment of books you can imagine via thepiratebay and you'll be set for your entire two years... you will literally have more books than you could possibly read in two years, even if you read a book a day. Mine has over 2000 books.

If you're one of those people who vehemently refuses to pirate stuff, then you can utilize the free Amazon e-books (they mostly suck balls, though there are a decent number of classics [still sucks balls imo]) or pay thousands of dollars for an equivalent amount of virtual content on amazon.com.

The solar battery pack has a USB port that the Kindle can plug into, or you can plug it directly into the solar panel itself (the panel has a USB port built in) for immediate charging.

The Kindle 3G + Wifi is tiny, and durable if you get a decent hard case for it (I use this one and it's amazing). There's also a decent chance that you'll be able to use the 3G--I'm in Tanzania and it works pretty much everywhere in the country. It's slow... very slow... but it's free and no slower than the internet would be if you paid for it and used a laptop. It's basically just free internet, good for e-mail and Facebook on the go. Even if it doesn't work, no big deal. You can use it in internet cafes via wifi, or just forgo internet altogether and just use it as a portable, solar-powered library.

The Kindle + case, panel and charger together folds down to a flat-ish bundle no larger than a hardback book that you can carry with you in your bookbag. I go everywhere with it, mostly because I like to always have something to do. Also, my entire house could get ransacked and I wouldn't even care... but if they want my Kindle and solar panel, they'll have to kill me. I'd rather be dead than have nothing to read.

u/ThatBandYouLike · 3 pointsr/kindle

I use this guy right here. Don't know how it stacks up against the official Amazon case, but I do know it is 30 bucks cheaper, works well, looks good, and it has the sleep/wake thing and a magnet in the cover.

u/chelejose · 2 pointsr/kindle

If you're looking for a cheap case I would recommend you a Fintie case. It's good enough for me, although it is my first kindle and I have only had the case for 1 month, so I'm not sure if it'll last long. From what I've read in the reviews there isn't much people complaining about it. I bought the black one, which is $10, but there are a lot of other colors and designs you can pick, although they are a little bit more expensive (like $17 instead of $10).

u/Lynn_L · 2 pointsr/crafts

>Just out of curiosity, is there a reason you don't just get a new Kindle case?

Yeah. The old one is called a Leisure Jacket. It wasn't waterproof but it was great for pool and beach use to protect against splashes and sand. But it was made for when Kindles still had page turning buttons on the side. There is nothing similar at all for the touch models -- your two choices for the touch models are glorified ziplock bags or very expensive Fort Knox type contraptions that are very difficult to change out easily.

The new Kindle coming out, the Voyage, actually is bringing back a form of buttons with page turn sensors on the edge that respond to a squeeze, which should work perfectly with the Leisure Jacket. But M-Edge isn't going to be making one (I asked them) and nobody else made something similar.

>I'm sure you could find someone on Etsy or Craigslist who'd be happy to try it

I am totally unfamiliar with Etsy... how does one go about making a request like this there? No sentimental value, this is purely practical.

u/lantech · 2 pointsr/kindle

IMO one is better off with a hard case rather than a sleeve. The sleeve doesn't prevent crush/bend injuries.

I have this one on my paperwhite. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00H1OR9RK

u/losanglo · 2 pointsr/kindle

A waterproof case. Expensive, but worth it to me, so I can read in the pool and bathtub. :)

u/LookItsDawn · 2 pointsr/kindle

I agree with everyone else in here about just getting a basic Kindle. I just bought a kindle touch and wish I had bought a regular kindle instead. The touch is a little too sensative for my liking. I find myself accidentally turning pages when I'm not holding it perfectly.

Whatever you do, make sure buy a decent case. My friend scratched the screen on her kindle just by keeping it in her purse for a couple hours. I can recommend [THIS ONE] (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B005KDY756/thicatliwi-20) but any case is better than none. Good luck!

u/[deleted] · 2 pointsr/kindle

Which Kindle do you have? I have a Kindle 3 and I use this. Fantastic case.

But before I had that, I used a padded shipping envelope with cardboard. For a light, I use candles.

u/animeman59 · 2 pointsr/books

The Paperwhite is awesome. Best damn ereader I ever used.

You should also get a nice cover like this one.

u/JBaby_9783 · 2 pointsr/kindle

This is a good Kindle. My mom loves it. She has the the black model. I got her this case in black. I was impressed with the fit. For $10 it’s super awesome.

u/ChromaLife · 2 pointsr/kindle

I was going to get something like this. It seems to be cheap which is most of my purchasing requirements.

u/baker_esq27 · 2 pointsr/kindle

Fiancé and I both got this one. Our first kindles too. Wasn’t sure what kind of case we’d eventually want but wanted to protect them in the interim.

$9.95, works great, looks great. We love them.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07K16HYGQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_jGOADbDPJJW66

We got it in two colors. Both appear to be of consistent quality.

u/Thtgrl- · 2 pointsr/kindle

I've had both types of cases and I don't think it makes much of a difference either way honestly. I do, however love my magnetic case that turns the Kindle on and off when you open/close the case.

This is the one I have, it's pricey and it doesn't fit the newest model, but if you search magnetic Kindle case on Amazon you'll find one that fits the newest editions. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B008IJR79W/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_-rCwCbMFC2Y53

This is the one I have: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004HIVBJ0
Works well for me.

u/ne99ne · 1 pointr/kindle

Octovo sleeve is great and allows naked reading. I also like their Solis light, which takes a AA battery and covers the Kindle evenly. A Three Feet easel completes my Kindle happiness.

Mischief Managed (I have no idea if I'm doing this right, but you said to post them here, lol)

Riddle the First: Goblet. Since it is likely to be on fire, I might as well have some fun little Mystical Fire Campfire Fireplace Colorant Packets to toss into it. They make the flames change colors, without the use of an incantation.

Riddle the Second: A broomstick. I can't afford a top of the line Nimbus, so I've got to worry about getting splinters. Luckily I'm handy and could use this power sander to get rid of them and have a smooth ride.

Riddle the Third: A hat. I get horrible hat-hair, s the Revlon Volume Stay Titanium Hot Air Kit would be on my person all day, every day.

Riddle the Fourth: A book/multiple books. Most of my books are on the Kindle App now, and at some point I'd like to get an actual Kindle. I would give it the Verso Prologue cover. It's a Kindle holder that looks like a physical book. Pretty!

Riddle the Fifth: A traveling trunk. One problem with storing things in a trunk is that you end up with moth-eaten fabric. I plan on keeping moths out of my robes by spraying the interior of the box with the Cedar Spray.

Riddle the Sixth/Bonus: A cape! You know who wears a cape? DARTH VADER. How about a little cross-series cosplay mash-up? Darth Vader Costume With Cape, Belt And Mask This way I can have fun and pretend I'm using The Force, but really I'd be using legit magic. Plus, it would be funny to cast a spell while going "Khhhhh-shhhhhhhhhh". Nothing could go wrong with that. Nothing at all.

u/Corgana · 1 pointr/kindle

Not sure what you mean- the oasis case is metal and there are many magnetic covers available for it. Here's one I quickly found by googling "Oasis magnetic cover"

u/iamaminkey · 1 pointr/kindle

I got one of these little battery powered ones for £20. I've used it for probably a hundred hours over the course of a year and it shows no signs of dimming.

u/dxm06 · 1 pointr/kindle

I think that the cover is the first (and only) accessory you should purchase for your Kindle. There are hundreds of covers available, but I think that Amazon Kindle Paperwhite Leather Cover is a really solid cover that most people like. The price was $32 just a few days ago, but is at $40 now.

In addition, I picked up one of these covers ($30) for a friend's daughter on her birthday, and I was impressed by the build of it. It feels really sturdy, and has an antique feel to it. However, it does not feature the auto-on/off when you open the cover, which the aforementioned Amazon cover has.

u/SirKolbath · 1 pointr/kindle

Yes, I have this case. It covers the back and closes like a book to protect the screen. I don’t have a clear screen protector like on my phone and iPad, though. (This cover also puts the Kindle in standby mode when it is closed. I don’t think it fits the Oasis, though.)

u/DoubleHoeSeven · 1 pointr/kindle

You should look into the Verso Prologue. It's made of leather and has a "book" look to it but it doesn't add bulk to the KPW. They've got it in red and brown with very subtle designs for each.

FWIW, I've got the Amazon KPW case and the Prologue in red and I love both of them but find myself using Amazon version because of the magnetic closure.

EDIT: I just looked the case up and it looks like they've got 3 additional styles for it. Link here.

u/kampasta · 1 pointr/AskMen

if your guy likes reading and owns a kindle, something like this
this would probably be a great idea, if he doesn't already have one. You could write a sentimental message or attach a picture of you (or do both) on the inside cover when you give it to him

Heh. Just posted this in another thread, but
>I'm a huge fan of book-looking ones. Just got the [Verso Prologue] (http://www.amazon.com/Verso-Prologue-Cover-Kindle-Paperwhite/dp/B006ZCBN9E) in blue and it's great. [Note that I got it for my K5/Kindle Touch.]

u/SrBurns · 1 pointr/argentina

u/JohnEdwa · 1 pointr/kindle

My pre-owned Kindle happened to come with a Verso Prologue cover, but there are plenty of more functional and cheaper cases around so I can't really recommend it for the price they are asking for it.

Then again, I'm not going to get anything else as I love the way this looks.

u/chaosking121 · 1 pointr/kindle

I bought the Finite Kindle case in lieu of the official case and I have effectively zero complaints other than a minor strictly visual one, unique to my unit. It offers the screen on/off functionality, has a magnetic latch and I like the protection it offers. It's a tad bulky, but it can easily be handled with one hand. I don't know how the added bulk compares to the official case, so that's something to consider.

u/92MsNeverGoHungry · 1 pointr/kindle

Yeah, that's weird. I couldn't find it on the Otterbox website either.

But here it is on amazon itself.

u/anchoriteburan · 1 pointr/kindle

I'm currently using the Amazon (discontinued) fabric cover on my release-day Oasis. I did check for alternatives in case something happens to this case/Kindle or I decide I don't like the blue. I have the Ayotu one on my wish list along with this CaseBot case.

Something to know about this style of cover:

It does have the weak-magnet issue some have mentioned, but that's mostly because the magnets in the cover are attracted to the magnet in the back half that attaches to the thinner part of the Kindle. I slip my fingers between cover and Kindle to nudge a corner loose and then the cover swings loose easily while the back remains attached. Tugging it quickly without doing that first just causes the whole thing to come off with the smaller back half still folded against the front.

I like that the cover side of the case will remain anchored against the Kindle while I'm reading rather than hanging loose like my other third-party full-wraparound cases.

I don't know if the third party half-back ones do so or not; it's entirely possible they don't, since I imagine CaseBot and Ayotu would be trying to avoid the issue that led to the Amazon cover disappearing so thoroughly that the product page is gone and you can't buy used ones.

u/nermal543 · 1 pointr/kindle

They actually redesigned their official Oasis covers, after a lot of complaints that the magnets on the old design weren't strong enough. Here are the new covers:
