In that case, that's even more impressive given the resourcefulness!

Looks like you can get some on Amazon for a decent price...

Its a flyfishing line nipper. Notice there is a little pointy needle in the handle, thats for poking out the resin/epoxy from the head of the fly because during the fly making process the hole is often covered and you need to open it up. Here is one:

Some useful inexpensive gear. This assumes that his uniform isn't strictly regulated:

While this isn't recommended at all, I've been in the same situation. What pound mono are you trying to crimp? Also what style of gun do you have it on and what kind of fish are you planning on shooting?

  1. Slide one side of the crimp onto the mono then slide the tag end of the mono through whatever you're trying to make a loop around.
  2. Now slide the tag end of the mono through the other side of the crimp, pull it through about 3-4 inches.
  3. Get a lighter and heat up just the very tip of the mono. This should make the end of the mono swell into a ball.
  4. Once the tag end cools down, snug it up against the crimp. It shouldn't slip through the crimp. This is an added measure since you won't be able to gauge your crimping pressure very well.
  5. When you use the pliers to crimp, the goal is to make the crimp snug on the mono, but if you crimp too hard it will cut the mono and the connection will be extremely weak. Only crimp in the middle of the crimp, not toward the edges. On your crimp there are two "barrels" when you squeeze with the pliers the barrels should be on top of each other not side by side.

Tip: don't make the loop tiny. You should be able to fit you pinky through the loop after you are done crimping.

Also, a set of crimpers can be found for ~$25 on Amazon or online tackle shop. Don't lose the fish of a lifetime because you skimped out on $25.

My 10 yo girl has been fishing since about 3 when she started with a Dora the Explorer zebco. She now casts with a spinning reel but prefers a spin cast.

The key is kids like action. They're impatient. It's hard for her to fish with live bait because she wants to cast and reel. Your kid will probably be the same.

My suggestion is to get a zebco spin cast combo for him. 6' rod. Get 1/8 and 1/4 oz jig heads and a couple of packs of Berkley saltwater gulp in shrimp, shad or jerk bait styles. Buy a couple of top water lures. Get a couple of crank baits. Don't worry about proper technique. Try to get him to slow his retrieve. I taught my kid 5 cranks then count to five then repeat.

Use a 20# flurocarbon or mono leader about 18in long. Teach him to not reel the knot through the guide. Learn a surgeon's knot to tie the line to the leader. Learn to tie a loop knot when tying the leader to the lures. Google is your friend

Get a pair of pliers with sheath. You can buy cheaper than these, but these are good quality. Pliers

Wear sunscreen and have fun.

after 36 years tying with tiemco ceramic heavy duty bobbin holders (straight or curved) that would be my #1 choice

https://www.amazon.com/Tiemco-Ceramic-Bobbins/dp/B06XB9YF5Z

my #2 choice would be dr slicks glass bobbin holder

https://www.amazon.com/Slick-Glass-Bobbin-Delrin-Feet/dp/B076HH7CMM

all bobbin holders should be adequate to "crank down on your hooks"

its the thread that would actually be the problem. it breaks, not the bobbin holder

why cant your orvis bobbin holder be used to tie your articulated streamers?

Recycling an old comment:

This is the materials kit I started with in the spring. Great quality materials. Full spools of thread and wire, "kit packs" of some things which are basically half a retail pack. You'll run out of hooks far before you run out of anything else. Booklet has patterns for some classic flies to get you familiar with the basics. https://www.amazon.com/Hareline-Fly-Tying-Material-Kit/dp/B01MG1K933.

I also purchased a Hareline tools and vice kit which was pretty decent, but I did replace the vice after a few months. Still use all the other tools though. Make sure you get the deluxe kit which has a "hair stacker". Any fly that uses elk or deer hair looks a lot better if you align the tips.

For patterns I've been going to the Orvis website. Huge variety and beautifully shot videos. Using the materials kit as a base I pick up a few new materials every couple weeks and learn to tie new patterns. https://howtoflyfish.orvis.com/fly-tying-videos. There are some great books out there as well. But I find following these videos much easier. The presenter is really good for showing you how to measure things to keep the proportions correct.

Good luck!

Thanks! Just keep tying and each fly gets better!

I use fisherman's lanyards. Basically like small telephone cord. Not exactly a "traditional" look, but they're effective.
